Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABEL SPENCER, JR., OF SOUTHPORT. NE\V YORK.
MORTISINGr-MACHINE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 25,055, dated August 9, 1859.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ABEL SPENCER, Jr., of Southport, county of Chemung, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement, not known or used before, in lvfortising Carriage-Hubs, which invention, and the manner of using it, is as follows:
A is the bottom board or floor; B, B, is the frame which holds the hub in its place to be inortised; C, C, are cross-bars which hold the hub; D is the hub to be mortised; E, E, are the two cross-heads which are connected together' by the jointed rods (J, J H is the chisel which is fastened in the center of the upper c-rosshead; I is a wire which connects the frame IF ig. 2) with the spring (K) g G is a standard which holds the spring (K) to its proper place; F is a treadle which is connected to the lower Cross-head by means of the lower rod (/I).
The manner of operating this machine is to take hold of each end of the upper crosshead (E), place your foot on the treadle (F) 5 then guide the chisel where you want it, and pressing down with your foot, the chisel is raised out of the mortise by means of the spring (K). All that is required extra for a large machine is the frame (Fig. 2), a spring-pole fastened over head, and treadle fastened to the floor.
I am aware that there are other' machines which mortise hubs and space them off, but they are less simple in arrangement and more expensive in construction.
Having described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The frame (Fig. 2) made with crossheads connected together by means of the jointed rods (J, J and having those rods jointed at or nearly in line with the cutting edge of the chisel, and the mode of applying or using it, or any other manner substantially the same.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name the twentieth day of June, 1859.
