FILING COTTON-GIN`SAWS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,042, dated August 9*, 1859.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CoLwnLL P. Poor., of New Market, in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Scoring, VVhetting, and Rounding Saws of Cotton-Gins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica tion, in which- Figure l, represents a vertical longitudinal section of a machine constructed according to my invention and Fig. 2, is a plan or top view of the same.

This invention consists in arranging in a common tile case a series of tiles in suitable sockets in such a manner that a reciprocating as well as an oscillating motion can be given to the tiles, and that when the same are brought in the proper relation to the saws of a given cylinder, the teeth of the several saws may be scored by one and the same operation, and also whetted and rounded, so that it is not necessary to go through the same operations for every single saw.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand, make, and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its operation and construction.
Supported b v a frame A, is the tile case B, the .sides of which are perforated with holes, which forni guides for the shanks c, of the tile-holders or sockets b, and these sockets are connected to the shanks by means of fiat springs c, so that the files when inserted in the socket-s accommodate themselves to casual inequalities of the saws.
The several shanks of the tile-holders are rmly secured in a bar C, which receives motion in the direction to and from the case and which is guided in its motion by means of two rods d, which work in openings in the sides of the case. Motion is communicated to the bar C, from a double crank shaft D, the two cranks e, of which connect with the bar by means of rods and motion is imparted to the crank shaft D, by a handle g, or by a band-wheel from some source.
The Shanks a, of the file-holders are provided with slots a, and they pass through sleeves b', which fit nicely between the sides of the case B. Secured to the underside of these sleeves are projections o, which fit into slots cZ, in the top of a ridge e, which is rigidly attached to a slide E. This slide is arranged on the bottom of the ease B, and it has a flange f extending through one of the sides of the case, which connects'by means of a pitman F, with an eccentric wrist pin g, which is secured in the side of a cog wheel G. wheel from a spur wheel hi, mounted on one end of an arbor z', the other end of which bears a large cog wheel H, gearing in a pinion h, which is attached to the end of the crank shaft D. By these means as the crank shaft is rotated a sliding motion is imparted to the slide E, together with the ridge e, and the sleeves o, receive an oscillating motion as the slots d', in the ridge act against the projections 0, on the under side of the sleeves. This oscillating motion of the sleeves is communicated to the shanks of the lile holders by means of set screws y'-, which screw in the upper sides of the sleeves reaching through them and into the slots a, in the shanks a, leaving the latter free to move in a longitudinal direction independent from the sleeves, but compelling them to assume the oscillating motion of the latter. If these screws j, are taken out or if the pitman F, be disconnected from the flange j, or from the wrist pin g, no oscillating motion is imparted to the file holders.
Adjustable arms A, extend from the frame A, beyond the file case and attached to the same at right angles are two bars I, which form the guides for sliding heads c, 7c, which are adjusted according to the length of different gin cylinders and which form the bearings for the axles of these cylinders.
K, represents a gin cylinder adjusted in the heads Ze, having a series of saws Z, the distance of which must correspond to the distance of the file holders of the machine, and these latter may easily be so arranged, that they can be adjusted to suit different distances of the saws in different cylinders. A slow rotary motion, is imparted to this cylinder in the direction of arrow 1, in the drawing by means of a pinion m, which is secured on the outside of the arbor z', and which gears in a large cog wheel L, mounted on an axle n, which bears a band wheel 0,

The operation is as follows z-After the cylinder K, has been adjusted in the heads ic, as clearly represented in Fig. 2, of the drawing, the files are inserted in the sockets or ile holders 0, in Which they may be retained by set screws or in any other convenient manner, and the pitman F, is detached so as to give the files a longitudinal reciprocating motion only When the machine is set in motion. By this operation one tooth after the other of all the saWs is scored, and now the pitinan is connected again and the Whetting and rounding operation begins. During this latter stage of the work the oscillating motion given to the files by the action of the slide E, and of the sleeves b', is Very essential, as the motion thus given to the les is identically the saine Which has been found to be best adapted for this operation When carried out by hand, and the aim in constructing this machine has been to imitate the motion of the Workmen When they score, Whet and round the saws in the usual manner by hand, but instead of having each saw to finish separately, by the aid of my machine I ain enabled to finish all the saws in a shorter time than it takes a man to finish one saw.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is, A
The arrangement of the file case B, With the file holder I), and sleeves b', to operate in combination with the bar C, and With the slide E, and ridge e, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
