Description

March 21, 1950 H. H; WOODWARD REMOVABLE SHOULDER PAD FOR GARMENTS Filed March 25, 1946 ..WOODARD M ATTORNEYS \NVENTOR Patented Mar. 21, 1950 REMOVABLE SHOULDER PAD FOR GARMENTS Hermon Hall Woodward, Westmount, Quebec, Canada, assignor to Tooke Bros. Limited, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Application March 25, 1946, Serial No. 656,807

2 Claims.

This invention relates to removable shoulder pad arrangements for womens tailored shirts and like garments.

A particular object of this invention is to provide the under side of the shoulder portions of a womans tailored shirt or like garment with padreceiving pockets in which pads are inserted through intermediate openings to give the shoulders a high square efiect.

A further object is to provide a pad-receiving pocket with an entrance opening intermediate the length of the pocket and parallel with one of its marginal portions through which a removable pad is inserted.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a pad and pad-receiving pocket which is inexpensive to make and which is readily attached to the shoulder portion of a woman's tailored shirt or like garment.

More particularly, the present invention provides a removable shoulder padding for a womans tailored shirt which is neatly concealed in the shoulder pocket of the garment. The pocket is so formed that, while it holds the pad firmly in place, the opening enables the wearer to remove and replace the pad with ease.

Proceeding now to a more detailed description of this invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. l is a side view of the neck and shoulder portions of a shirt equipped with removable shoulder pads embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the removable pad elements which is inserted in a pad-receiving pocket as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

In the accompanying drawings my improved shoulder pad arrangement is shown secured in place on the under side of each shoulder portion 1 l of a womans tailored shirt l2. It comprises a triangular pad-receiving pocket I 3 in which a triangular pad It is inserted to give the shoulders a high square effect.

Each of the triangular pockets I3 comprises lower and upper pad-receiving pouches I5 and t6. Lower pad-receiving pouch I5 is formed by folding a piece of textile material to provide a bottom wall i8 and front and rear walls l9 and 20, respectively, the front wall l9 being joined, at its upper corners only, to the rear wall 20 and the rear wall being secured along its upper edge 22 to the under side of shoulder portion I I Upper padreceiving pouch I6 is formed by securing a triangular piece of material 23 along its side edges 24 and 25, from the base to the apex, to the under side of shoulder portion i I so that the base 26 of the material 23 overlaps rear wall 20. In this manner the material 23 forms the front wall and the under side of the shoulder portion ll forms the rear wall of pouch l 6.

The free edges 26 and 21 of pouches l6 and I5, respectively, are arranged to provide an entrance opening 28 lying intermediate the length of the triangular pocket [3 and parallel to bottom wall 18. Pad M is removably inserted in pocket l3 through opening 28 so that the upper portion is received in pouch I 6 and the lower portion in pouch I5.

Having thus described what I now conceive to be the preferred embodiment of this invention, it will be understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope and spirit of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A removable shoulder pad arrangement for garments comprising a. triangular removable shoulder pad, a triangular pad-receiving pocket assembly at the under side of the shoulder portion of said garment, said triangular pocket assembly being closed along its bottom edge and along at least a substantial portion of each side edge and being provided intermediate its apex and base with a pad-receiving opening extending parallel to said base, the portion of the pocket assembly disposed above and below said opening forming upper and lower oppositely disposed padreceiving pouches accessible through said opening, said lower pouch comprising a separate piece of material folded upon itself to form the front, rear and bottom walls of said lower pouch, said front and rear walls being secured to each other and to the under side of said shoulder portion so as to admit a portion of the pad inserted through said opening into said lower pouch between the upper edges of the front and rear walls, and in which said upper pouch comprises a triangular piece of material secured along its side edges to the under side of said shoulder portion with its base disposed adjacent the upper edge of the front wall of the lower pouch to admit the remainder of said pad inserted through said opening into said upper pouch.

2. A removable shoulder pad arrangement for garments comprising a triangular removable shoulder pad, a triangular pad-receiving pocket assembly at the under side of the shoulder portion of said garment, said triangular pocket assembly being closed along its bottom edge and along at least a substantial portion of each side edge and being provided intermediate its apex and base with a pad-receiving opening extending parallel to said base, the portion of the pocket assembly disposed above and below said opening forming upper and lower oppositely disposed padreceiving pouches, accessible through said opening, said lower pouch comprising a, separate piece of material folded upon-itself to form the front, rear and bottom walls of said lower pouch, the rear wall of said lower pouch being secured along its upper edge to the under side of the shoulderportion of the garment and said front wall being joined at its upper corners to the rear wall with the upper edge of said front-wall free to admit a portion of the pad between-the front and rear walls which has been inserted through the adjacent pad-receiving opening of saidpocket assembly.
