WASHING MACHINE.

' WITNESSES iNVENTOR ATTORNEY wire STATES PATENT twice.
HIRAM ROUSSEAU, OF AUGUSTA, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,004, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed April 7, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM BoUssEAU, of Augusta, in the county of Butler and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my improved washingmachine; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, showing the lid folded over and covering the suds-box.
This invention has relation to improvements in washingmachines, more particularly the lids thereof.
The invention consists in the construction of a lid, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
While this device is applicable to various kinds of machines having ditierent boxes, it is proposed to use it with the one shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- The letterAdesignates a suds-box supported upon suitable legs,a, and having a concave bottom, b. This bottom is provided with a sufficientlayer, 3 of plaster-ofparis, in which are embedded a number of longitudinallygrooved wooden strips, 0, and which are secured in position by any suitable means.
B indicates a scrubber, consisting of two parallel semicircular heads, (I, and strips (1, of a squared form, let into the same. This scrubher is convex to correspond to the ribbed bottom of the suds-box, and is operated by means of a handle,G, the side bars of which are made each in two sections, 0 c, hinged together at f, and capable of folding over upon each other and of being locked together by a hook,f, as shown in Fig. 2, for a purpose hereinafter set forth. This scrubber is provided at its sides with journal-arms, that are received in grooves g in the inner walls of the uprights G, secured to the outside of the suds-box in a vertical position, and have their bearings in the upper edges of the said box. By working the handle to and fro, garments between the bottom of (Model.)
said box and the scrubber are subjected to a vigorous friction and speedily cleansed.
At the rear end of box A is a transverse roller-bridge, D, having its bearings in offsets 7c of the frame.
To the construction above described, and to which no claim is made, the lid constituting invention is attached. This is done by securing. to the roller a lid or cover, D, having a flange, l,of the same form as the upper edge of the suds-box, and provided with lateral recesses m, directly opposite each other, for the reception of the uprights O. This lid is capable of swinging over on the bridge-roller D upon the suds-box, when itcompletely covers in and conceals it, and serves as an ironingboard or kitchen-table, being provided with an extension or overhang, a, to make the table sufficiently wide and long. This lid or cover, when thrown over in the position shown in Fig. 1, with its under side upward, forms, by means of theflange Z, a receptacle for the washed or unwashed clothes, the bridge-roller l) serving to move the clothes from or to the lid.
The free end of the lid, when used as a clothesholder, is supported by means of legs G, detachably secured to slides 0, working endwise through perforations in the end walls of the flange. These slides are extensible, and are provided with sockets, in which the legs are inserted to support the lid when it is open.
Attached to flange l are hooks t for the at tachment of dish-cloths and other suitable devices of immediateuse.
I am aware that a washing-machine having a-cover hinged to its side is not new, and I do not claim such device, broadly.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The suds-box A, in combination with cover D, hinged to said box, slides 0, and legs G, detachably secured to said slides, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
I-IIRAM ROUSSEAU. Witnesses:
