SCREW-PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,860, dated November 22, 1881. Application nien April 1, rsa1. (No model.)
To all whom it may conce/rn Beit known that I, Lnvr W. SrockwnLL, of Cleveland, Ohio, have invented a new and use'ful Improvementin Screw-Plates, ot' which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to that class of screwplates in which the threading-dies are adjusted and moved in radial grooves toward and from the center of the plate by means of a disk proro vided on one side with eccentric calns which enter slots across the dies.
The object of my invention is to provide the camdisk with eccentric cams ot' unequal lengths, one for each threading-die, and so ar- 1 5 ranged that all the dies may be placed in the radial grooves of the plate,and then,by turning the cam-disk, the cams will severally enter, one at atime,the slots across the dies. By reason of the cams being of unequal lengths each die may 2o be adjusted to a position for its cam to enter it Without risk of dislodging such ofthe other dies as nlay have already been adjusted and entered by their respective cams.
Another object of nly invention is to hold the cam-disk in position, when the dies have been properly adj usted for operation, by means of an adjustable slotted stop attached to the side of the screw-plate by a screw through the slot, the stop being provided with a projection which 3o enters a notch in the circumference ofthe calndisk.

with its cams c c c2 c3 in the circular grooves b in the frame, where it is retained by the faceplate a2,which is attached by screws to frame b. The cam-disk dis held loosely against theframe, so that it may be turned. ltis provided with a handle, d', by means of which it may beturned 5o on the frame to move the dies a toward and from the center of the screw-plate. Its diameter is greater than that of frame b, and its circumferenceis notched at x to receive the projection e of stop s. The spring-stop s is attached to the circumference lot' frame b by screw o and th amb-nut o', and is adjustable by means of its slot n. It is a spring, in order that its projection e may be withdrawn from notch :o without loosening thumb-screw 0. Its func- 6o tion is to hold cam-disk d in place when the dies are in proper position for threading. When the threading has been completed the dies a may be withdrawn to release the threaded bolt by drawing back the end of the springstops till its projection e isout of notch x, and then turning cam-disk d byits handle LZ. When the threaded bolt has been withdrawn another bolt to be threaded may be substituted and dies a closed against it without readjustment 7o by turning cam-disk d till the projection e of stop s springs into notch x.
To adj ust dies a to different-sized bolts to be threaded, thumb-nut o' should beloosened and cani-disk d turned, carrying with it stop s till the dies a are properly adjusted, when thumbnut o may be tightened, and then the screwplate is again ready for operation.
The cams o c c2 o3 are ot' unequal length, cam c being the longest, and cach ofthe others, in 8o order, being of gradually decreased length.
When it is desired to remove the dies and replace them cam-disk l should be turned to such a position that all the dies a will be dislodged from the cams, when they may be withdrawn from frame b between the ends of the cams. When dies a have been replaced in the frame between the ends ot' the cams the camdisk d should be turned until the outer end of cam c is in contact with the side ot' the die, 9o which may then be moved radially by hand until, by slightly pressing on the handle d' ot' cam-disk d, the cam c enters the notch a in the die, and the outer eild of cam c is in contact with the side of the next die. Then, in the same manner as just described, cam c may be caused to en ter the notch in its die without dislodging the die from cam c. In this manner all of the cams successively may be caused to enter the notches a in dies a without any of them becoming dislodged durin g the operation.
In the relative positions of the cams and dies as shown in Fig.4, all the dies having first been placed in their radial grooves in frame b between the ends of the cams c c c2 ci, and the cam-disk d turned till cams c c successively entered their dies, as above described, the operator may now successively adjustthe remaining two dies to be entered by` their cams c2 c without either of the other dies becoming dislodged from its cani.
