SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,855, dated November 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY MULLEN, a citizen of theUnitcd States, residing at Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Whip Cores and Whips, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the details of the construction of an improved core for whips and of whips embodyingin their construction said improved cores, the object being to provide for whips an improved core in regard to elasticity, even flexure, and strength.

In the drawings, forming part of this specification,Figure 1 illustrates a whip-core constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section at the line 0 0, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a portion of the tip of the core, Fig. 1. Fig. at is a transverse section at theline v 0, Fi 3. Fi 5 illustrates a whip, partly in section, having my improved core in it; and Fig. 6 isa transverse section at line :0 m, Fig. 5.

In the drawings, D is the core, composed of a squared rattan center, I), and a covering of rawhide, a, wound spirally around it. c c c c are the usual rattan sidings.

In constructing my improved core, I first make a four-sided tapering rattan center piece, I). Around said center piece I wind spirally and there secure with glue a rawhide covering, a. Said covering a, to properly prepare it for winding around the center 1), against the sides of which it should bind firm and lie close, is somewhat softened by dampening it, andit is cut to an even proper thickness. Having so prepared said rawhide covering, that and the centerpiece, b,are well coated with strong glue, and said covering is wound upon the center I) as solidly as possible, giving the core the appearance shown in Fig. 1, and any surplus glue is wiped off and the core is allowed to dry. In making said cores of an extreme slimness at the tip the glue-covered rawhide covering is carried up beyond the smaller end of the center piece, I), and, being plentifully covered with glue, it is twisted so hard as to form with said glue a tip of great strength and elasticity, and one having the appearance of the piece a, as

around it to form a whip, without any special preparation of the said sidings therefor.

The rawhide covering of the inner core, being absorbent, retains a larger body of glue than would be held upon the surface merely, and being interposed between the inner core and the outer covering-pieces, secures a much more perfect and durable union of the parts than if they were applied directly one to the other, as usual. Moreover, the rawhide, which imparts tensile strength, being placed within the body of the whip, will not be weakened, as it is when outside and subject to wear.

In making a whip having the core D therein the sidings c are glued solidly against the sides of said core, as shown in Fig. 5, and the relative positions of center I), the rawhide a, and the sidings c are further shown in Fig. 6, which is a transverse section of a whip enibodying the above-named parts, and including the usual chink-pieces, which are placed between the outer edges of said sidings. The whip is finished by having a braided or other covering applied over the rattan sidin gs in the ordinary way.

What- I claim as my invention is- As an improved article of manufacture, a whip having a core consisting of a four-sided rattan center piece and a strip of rawhide wound spirally around and solidly glued thereupon, and having rattan strips surrounding said core and cemented thereto, substantially as set forth.
