A. WILLSON.
. RAILWAY GAR.
No. 249,815. Patented NOV.2Z,1881.
IIHED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ALFRED WILLSON, OF BELL EWART, ONTARIO, CANADA.
RAILWAY-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,815, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed August 25, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED WILLsoN, of Bell Ewart, in the county of Simeoe and Pro"- ince of Ontario, Canada, have invented an Improvement in Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of railway-cars, and has for its object the providing of an adjustable runningboard upon the ends of each car, so that a continuous running-hoard will he formed the entire length of the train.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinations'of the various parts,'all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which one end of a freight-car is shown in perspective, and provided with my device, A represents a freight-car provided with the running-board B, all of theordinary construction. As each end of the car is to be provided with the same device, I will describe but one.
0 represents a suitable frame, pivotally secured at its lower end to the end of the car, its upper end being retained in its elevated posi-. tion by the chain c.
l) is a spring, one end of which is secured to the car while the opposite end bears against the frame 0, compelling said frame to stand at an angle from the car.
Pivotally secured between the side bars of the frame 0 is a plank or plate, E, the opposite end of which rests upon the runningboard B of the car A.
The upper ends of the side bars of the frame 0 may extend upward, if desired, and thus form guards or handles 1).
In practice, two or more cars being coupled together and provided with this device, there will beformed acontinuous running-board from car to car, which will adjust itself to the various positions assumed by such cars while in motion 5 and by the employment of this device it will be almost impossible for a brakeman to fall between the cars, as often occurs when cars are of the ordinary construction; hence danger to life and limb is avoided.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A railway-car provided at each end of its roof with a sliding plate or platform, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the roof of a car the frame G, provided with a sliding board,E, substantially as described.
3. The hinged frame 0, provided with upwardly-extending guards or handles, I), in combination with the sliding board E and the car A, substantially as described.
4. The frame 0, hinged at its lower end to the car A, and provided at its upper end with the guards or handles 1), in combination with the sliding board E, the spring D, and means, substantially as described, for limiting the outward movement of the frame 0, substantially as specified.
ALFRED WILLSON.
