- P. CARL. MACHINE FOR STUFFING LEATHER.
Patented Nov. 15,1881.
N. PETERS. Pholo-Lilllogm hur. Wasllirlglfin. v.0.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
FREDERIO CARL, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
MACHINE FOR STUFFING LEATHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,455, dated November 15, 1881.
Application filed September 5, 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIO CARL, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical perspective view, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section.
Like letters of reference in the different figures of the drawings indicate corresponding parts.
My present invention is designed as an improvement on the machine described in Letters Patent ot the United States, numbered 63,856,dated April 16,1867; and itconsists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
In the drawings, A represents the body or cylinder of the machine, which is journaled at B in thesupporting-frame G, and provided with an opening, D, for inserting the leather. A steam-supply pipe, E, passes through one of the journals B, with which it revolves, and thence at right angles upwardly along the outer side of one end of the body A, as seen at F, terminating in the branchesd d, for conveying steam to the twin or corresponding heater disposed within the cylinder, of which the heater is shown at G in Fig.,,2.
The heater consists of a continuous pipe, or pipe without joints, bent to formparallel sections at a, and curved laterally to conform to the interior curvature of the cylinder, adraiupipe or stop-cock, H, being provided to draw off the water of condensation.
A series of slats or bars, J J, provided with,
pins m m for catching and holding the leather, are secured longitudinally within the cylinder, the heaters G being disposed between said bars and the outer casing of the body A. There is also ascreen or wire-netting, K, (shown as partially removed in Fig. 2,) attached to the bars J J, the pins m m projectinginwardly through the netting when the same is in position. The netting forms the interior side walls of the cylinder, its object being to effectually prevent the leather from coming into actual contact with the pipes without preventing the heater from properly acting on the stuffin g or leather contained in the cylinder.
In the use of my improvement, steam having first been let into the apparatus through the pipe E, the leather and composition for stuffing the same are inserted in the body A. through the opening D, which is then securely closed, and the cylinder caused to rotate by any suitable means, thus rapidly and efiectually performing the operation of stuffing in a manner which will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters without a more explicit description.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is As an improvement in a leather-stnffing machine,'the combination of a steam-tight cylinder, a wire-netting cylindrical screen within the steam-tight cylinder, steam-coils arranged against the inner side of the steam-tight cylinder and bent to conform thereto, a series of bars placed between the said coils and screen, a hollow journal-shaft connected to the steamcoils, and pins for holding the bars, substantially as described.
FREDERIG UARL.
