SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,288, dated November 8, 1881. Application filed October 3, 1881. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE N BARTLETT, of Natick, county of Middlesex, State of Mas,- sachusetts, and LEMUEL O. KINDALL, of Groton, county of Grafton, State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvement in Nailing-Machiues of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

This invention in nailing-machines has especial reference to means for lifting headed nails or tacks from a hopper or receptacle and depositing the same in a guideway to pass to a driver. l

. In this our invention the nails are picked up singly by a fork mounted upon a lever, which, besides being movedin the are of a circle, has a slight longitudinal movement at the proper time to discharge the nail from the fork of the lever into the guideway.

Figurel represents, in top view, a sufficient portion of a nailing-machine to illustrate our invention; and Fig. 2, a section thereof on the dotted line a: m, Fig. l, the full and dotted lines of the lever showing the two positions of its fork with relationto the interior of the circular hopper containing the tacks or nails to be lifted.

The hopper a, to contain the tacks or nails b, is circular inside. The stud ehas fixed to it the stationary cam 01, which receives in its groove the stud or roller e or lever f, pivoted at g on the revolving disk or wheel h, secured to the rotating shaft 43. The lever f, at its forward end, is provided with a fork, l, adapted, as the lever is caused to sweep through the hopper a in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, to engage a tack or nail by its head, as shown by the dotted lever, and thereafter carry the said tack or nail with it until the lever and fork reach nearlyits full-line position, Fig. 2, when, by the shape of the cam d, the lever and-fork are slightly withdrawn or moved back longitudinally to leave the head of the tack or nail suspended between the upper end of the side rails of the guideway m, when it will slide down the said guideway, all as usual. Should the head of the nail not be caught on the guideway, it will fall, as shown by nail b and, striking the lip n, will drop back into the hopper. The inclination of the lever and fork when drawn suddenly back is sufficient to aid the tack in being discharged.

We have provided the interior of the hop per with a clearer, 19, shown as a forked brush, between which the fork, carrying one or more tacks or nails, passes as the fork of the lever f approaches the guideway, such clearer acting to brush off from the forkl such tacks or nails which maybe lodged thereon crosswise. In practice we shall employ a large number of these forked levers in one machine, a. number of the said levers being carried by the same disk or wheel, and two or more such disks k may be employed.

The longitudinal motion imparted to the lever and fork is considered essential, for it frequently happens that the space at the upper end of the guideway is insufficient to receive the entire head of a nail, and should a part of the h ad of the nail be caught in the guide way, it is obvious that the forkl would be impeded in its movement unless drawn back beyond the said nail, but when drawn back a nail but partially lodged on the guideway may drop back into the hopper.

We claim- 1. In a nailing-machine, the guideway and hopper to contain tacks or nails, combined with the forked lever mounted on the movable disk or wheel, and with the cam to move the lever to withdraw the fork from below the head of the tack or nail, substantially as described.

2. The hopper and lever provided with fork Z, to lift the nails therefrom, combined with the brush to detach from the fork such nails as are improperly laid thereon, substantially as described.
