Description
Dec. 20, 1949 J. D. MORGAN AUTOMOBILE WINDOW SCREEN Filed Oct. 15, 1948 John D.- Morgan Patented Dec. 20, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,491,574 AUTOMOBILE WINDOW SCREEN John 1). Morgan, Smithfield, N. o.
Application October 15, 1948, Serial No. 54,733
, 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a novel screen for use in automotive vehicles and has for its primary object the provision of a screen of simplified construction which may be raised by the same mechanism which raises the window within the channel frame of the automotive vehicle.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a window screen to be positioned adjacent the window in the channel frame of an automotive vehicle whereby the raising of the window automatically raises the screen and a means is provided in the channel at the top of the Window frame for retaining the screen in raised position. After the screen is retained in the keeper in the upper portion of the channel frame member, the window may be retracted and the screen will remain suspended in the window as desired.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel latch and keeper to be associated with a screen for use in automotive vehicles, said latch including a means for releasing the screen from the keeper when it is desired to lower the screen.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide an automotive vehicle having a channel frame member, a window in said channel, and means for raising the window; a screen positioned in said channel adjacent said window, a keeper in said channel secured to the upper portion of the frame, a latch hingedly secured to the top of said screen, and means carried by said latch responsive to the raising of the window whereby said screen is also raised.
These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the screen of the instant invention illustrating the manner of raising the screen;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the screen illustrating the same in a raised position retained in the keeper with the window retracted;
Figure 3 is a group perspective view of the latch and the keeper;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of the keeper and latch in operative engagement; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the screen with the latch attached thereto.
Specific reference is now made to the drawings. In the several views in the accompanying drawlugs and in the following specification reference characters indicate'corresponding elements throughout.
Indicated generally at I0 is the lower portion of the channel frame member of an automotive vehicle in which is slidably positioned a window !2. The member l4 refers to the outer portion of the frame In. Indicated at I6 is the upper portion of the window frame. Positioned between the outer member M of the frame and the window I2 is a foraminous screen [8 retained on a substantially rectangular frame 20. Secured to the upper member 22 of the frame is a latch generally indicated at 24.
As shown clearly in Figure 3, this latch includes a U-shaped resilient member, preferably metallic copper 26, one leg of which carries a hinge 28 which is secured to the upper frame member 22 as at 30. One leg of the latch member 26 is provided with a recess 32 and below the recess a bolt 34 extends through the U-shaped member 26. One of the leg portions of the U- shaped member 26 is provided with a laterally extending arm 36 for a purpose to be later described.
Retained in the channel in the upper frame member 16 is a keeper 38, which as shown clearly in the drawings, is a U-shaped member. A screw 40 extends through the web portion of the member 38 and engages an aperture in the upper frame member 16. One leg 42 of the member 38 is provided with a detent 44 for engageably receiving the recess 32 of the latch 26.
In practical operation, as the window I! is raised by the usual means provided therefor in the automotive vehicle, the top edge of the window will abut the bolt 34 of the latch 25 thereby raising the screen l8 until the latch 26 rides into the keeper 38 and is retained therein when the detent 44 of the keeper engages the recess 32 of the latch. Thereafter, retraction of the window will still allow the screen to be retained in the keeper. Whenever it is desired to lower the screen, the latch 26 is depressed by means of the lateral arm 36 and then the screen :is pushed down manually in the channel. When the screen is lowered, the latch may be lifted from the window and pushed back on the hinge 28 to be free of the window, whereupon the window may be raised while the screen is in a lowered position.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accord. ingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In an automotive vehicle having a channel frame member and a window slidable-vertically therein; a screen positioned in said-channel adjacent said window, a keeper in said channel secured to the upper portion of the frame for holding the screen in an elevated yposition, :'a latch hingedly secured to the top of said screen, and means carried by said latch'responsiveto the raising of the window whereby;saidscreen is also raised.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said keeper is a u-shapedumember having a detent in one, of 2 the leg portions;.thereof.
3. The combination of claim 2 wherein said latch is a U-shaped member having a recess in one of the leg portions thereof for receiving said detent.
4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said last-mentioned means includes a bolt through both leg portions of said latch, said bolt overlying the top edge of said window.
