Application May 4, 1949, Serial No. 91,252
Claims.
This invention relates to prefabricated door and frame assemblies for houses and other buildings, and has reference to assemblies having divided telescoping jambs for framing wall openings. A door frame of the type referred to is fully described in my copending application, Serial No 34,265, filed June 21, 1948.
An object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive means for packing and shipping door and frame assemblies of the referred to class and whereby said assemblies are adequately protectd against damage in shipping.
Another object of the invention is to provide a convenient method of installing the door'and frame assemblies referred to in the wall openings to be framed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a packing assembly for a prefabricated door and frame assembly which rigidly secures said frame, and whereby the latter is square upon delivery.
A particular object of the invention is to support the hinged door within the frame until the door is secured in the wall opening.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred form of the invention and showing a prefabricated door and frame assembly packed for shipping.
Figure 2 is a broken front elevation of the assembly illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the corner packing boxes, and showing the same inverted relative to Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a broken perspective view of the lower corner of the lock edge of a door, and showirr the temporary lower spacer block attached thereto.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view of a prefabricated door and frame assembly of the divided telescoping jamb type.
Figure 6 is a borken perspective view showing the relative positions of the wall opening, the frame, door, and lower spacer block as they appear during one phase of the installation operation.
Figure 7 is a perspective view similar to Figure 4, but showing the temporary upper-spacer block attached to the upper edge of the door and nailed to the header of the frame.
Figure 8 is a front elevational view similar to Figure 2, of the lower end of a modified form of packing assembly showing a spacing arrangement and box assembly instead of the tie board illustrated in the preferred form of the invention.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of a lower corner box as illustrated in Figure 8.
In the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a prefabricated frame of the telescoping jamb type, and has a door H suspended therein by means of hinges 12. The lock and lock hardware, not shown, are also included in the assembly. A rectangular tie board l3, larger than the bottom end of the frame I0, is temporarily nailed to the lower ends of the frame, and triangular corner boxes I4 are positioned over and receive the upper corners of said frame. As particularly shown in Figure 3, each corner box M is comprised of a pair of blocks l5 arranged at right angles with respect to each other and secured along their outer edges by means of opposing angular sides l6. Preferably, the boxes M are made of lumber and nailed together, but within the present invention these members may be made of other suitable material. In assembly, the boxes M are positioned over and receive the upper corners of the frame 10, and a steel tension or crating strap I1 is positioned around said boxes and the tie member I3. The ends of the strap l l are joined by means of one or more clips 18, ordinarily used for such purpose. By reason of the described packing assembly, it will be noted that corners of the frame [0 are protected from damage during shipping, and that the assemblies may be stacked one upon the other without the frames l0 rubbing together. The door knobs l9 are preferably removed for shipping so as not to project beyond the triangular surfaces I6 of the corner boxes l4, or the longi tudinal edges of the tie member l3.
As particularly shown in Figure 4, there is an L-shaped lower support block 20 comprised of two smaller blocks or members 2| and 22 secured at their corners and which L-shaped block or support is positioned around the lower edge of the door H and the lock edge of said door. The
upright member 22 is nailed into the vertical edge of the door, and when the door is within 3 the frame, said vertical member is positioned between the doors edge and the adjacent door jamb 23. The lower member 2| fits between the bottom edge of the door II and the upper surface of the tie member II.
An upper spacer block 24 is nailed to the upper edge of the door I I and, in assembly, is positioned inwardly of the header portion of the frame III, in the manner to be described. By reason of the positions of the lower and upper spacer blocks 20 and 24, it will be apparent that the door II is well supported in the frame I for shipping when the strap I1 is tightened, and that the arrangement and attachment of said blocks is such that they will not interfere with opening the door after the frame III has been installed in the wall opening 25 to be framed. The halves of the frame I0 may be additionally secured for shipping by driving nails 26 through the header 2'' of said frame, but said nails should not be completely driven in order thatthey may be readily removed when necessary. As shown in Figure 7, the nail 28 for holding the upper spacer block 28 in place should be of such a length that it may be driven into the header 2! and into the upper edge of the door II. It will be noted that the described arrangement of the nails 23 and 28 does not mar the appearance of the door I I. The nail 28 serves the additional purpose of holding the door II shut during shipping.
The frame I0. illustrated in detail in Figures 5 and 6, extends vertically along each side of the door II and across the top thereof, and includes casings 23 on each side of a telescoping jamb arrangement 30. One of the lambs 23, previously referred to, is L-shaped in cross section and has its recessed portion or groove 3| outwardly positioned relative to the door opening and toward the component L-shaped jamb 32 which is oppositely arranged. A stop 33 is nailed to the surface of the first referred to jamb member 23 and is arranged to cover the recessed portion or groove 3|. In assembly, the groove 3| receives the tongue 34 of the second referred to jamb member 32.
When installing the frame III, the packaged assembly, as illustrated in Figure l; is uncrated near the wall opening 25 to be framed. The strap I1 is cut, and the tie member I3 and the corner boxes II are removed. The nails 28 and 28 in the header 2'! are then removed, and the grooved side of the frame III, to which the door II is hinged and secured, is positioned in the wall opening 25 and the jamb 23 is shimmed or blocked in place and the casing 28 is nailed to one wall surface 35. The tongue side of the frame It is then positioned in the wall opening 25 and the casing 29 is nailed to its adjacent wall surface 35. The iamb members 23 and 32 are arranged in telescoping position, as shown in Figure 5, and are brought together as closely as possible, after which nails are driven through the stops 33 and through the respective jamb members.
The form of the invention illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 is the same as illustrated in Figures 1 through 7 with the exception of an alternate means for rigidly securing the lower ends of the frame It relative to each other. Triangular boxes 35, similar to the previously described boxes II, are positioned over and receive the lower ends of the frame I0. Each box 35 is comprised of a pair of blocks 31 positioned at right angles-along adjoining edges and secured on opposite sides by means of triangular sides 38?. Within the right angle formed by the adiacent blocks 31, there is a rectangular spacer 38 which, in assembly, is received between the casing members 29 of the frame and bears against the jamb arrangement 30. The described L-shaped spacer block 20 is positioned along side of and beneath the edge of the door H in the manner previously described, and rests upon the surface of the lower block 31 of the adjacent box 35. The tension band IT is positioned around the upper and lower boxes I4 and 35, and by reason of the location of the hinges I2 and the spacer blocks 20 and 24, the assembly is well secured and protected for the purposes described.
The described form of the invention may be made and installed in many ways within the scope of the appended claims.
