This arrangement is desired so that if .lint or talc lodge upon the upper face of the head Il they will be thrown outwardly by centrifugal force in a plane above the ring and traveller, to thereby make the device largely self cleaning.
The outside diameter of the adapter head Il should be at least as large as the outside diameter of the full package, I2, and by making the ring I9 smaller in diameter than the head I4, the covering yarn Y upon leaving the package I2 and passing upwardly to the traveller 20 may rest upon the wide outer periphery of the head I4' rather than against the narrow edge of the ring I9.
The core covering spindle Il preferably extends upwardly a substantial distance above the upper end of the adapter so as to avoid bending the yarn "sharply around the edge of the ring I9 as it passes from the traveller to the core covering position, and the upper end of the spindle II is preferably made tapered as shown. It is desirable to make the height of the spindle above the upper face of the adapter at least equal to, and preferably greater than, the radius of the ring I9.
The construction of the adapter of the present invention is such that the disk-like head I4 with its wide outer peripheral edge provides an excellent guide for the yarn Y as it is pulled off the package I2 and passes upwardly to the traveller 20, since by this construction it is held out of by a whorl- 2l which may be of usual construction and is rotatably supported by an antifriction bearing, not shown. To the upper face of the whorl 2l is rigidly secured a tube supporting disk 24 that has the upwardly extending prongs 25 and this disk has an opening that surrounds thc casting 22. The covering yarn is supplied by a package 26 that is wound on the paper tube 21, and the prongs 25,.A which are four in number, snugly engage the inner bore of this tube.
The construction of Figs. 3 and 4 so far described serves to center the lower end portion of the package 26 about the spindle 23. The upper end of this package is centered by the adapter which will now be described. This adapter vconsists primarily of a thick disc-like head 2B that may be made of ber or othertough durable materials. The upper face of the head 28 is provided with a deep annular recess, irl-which is mounted the traveller ring 33, and on this ring is mounted the usual traveller 34. It is desirable, as above stated, to have the core covering spindle extend upwardly a substantial distance beyond the upper end of the adapter head. This is accomplished in the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 by providing the tube extension 35 which fits snugly within a portion of the tube 3I and central hole formed through the Vhead 28, to extend upwardly a substantial distance above the top of this head as shown. The thick outer edge of the head 28 `acts the same as the similar thick .outer edge of the head I4 to support the yarn as it approaches the traveller, and the yarn upon leaving this traveller passes upwardly to the upper end of the spindle 35where it is wound upon a core passing upwardly through such spindle to4 -speed Without causing excessive yarn breakage.
Having thus' described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. In combination with a core covering device having a hollow spindle adapted to support a package 'of covering yarn and rotate it about a core, an adapter comprising a thick disk having means for tting said spindle and the upper end of the package to center the package upon the spindle,` said disk having a deep annular recess in its upper face, a traveller ring of smaller diameter than theA disk mounted in said recess to lie below said upper face, and a traveller for the covering yarn that travels upon said ring in a path that lies below the upper face of said disk and inwardlyY from its outer periphery.
2. In combination with a core covering device having v a hollow spindle adapted to support a package of covering yarn and rotate it about a core, an adapter comprising a thick disk having means for iitting said spindle and the upper end of the package to center the package upon the spindle, said disk having a thick outer edge against which the yarn can rest and an annular recess in its upper face, a traveller ring of smaller diameter than the disk mounted in said recess, and a traveller for the covering yarn that travels upon said ring in a path that lies inwardly from the 4outer edge of the disk.
3. In combination with a core covering device having a hollow spindle adapted to support a package of covering yarn and rotate it about a core, an adapter comprising a thick disk having means for fitting said spindle and the upper end of the package to center the package upon the spindle, said disk having a thick outer edge against which the yarn can rest and an annular recess in its lower face adapted to receive a protruding end ofthe package, a traveller ring of smaller diameter than the disk mounted upon the disk, and a traveller for the covering yarn that travels upon said ring in a path that lies inwardly from the outer edge of the disk.
4. In combination with a core covering device having'a hollow spindle adapted to` support a means for fitting said spindle and the upper end of the package to center the package upon the I spindle, said disk having a thick outer edge and a deep recess in its upper face, a traveller ring of smaller diameter than the disk mounted in said recess, and a traveller for the .covering yarn that travels upon said ring in a path that lies inwardly from -said thick outer edge so that the yarn may rest against this edge as it passes to the traveller. i f
5. In combination with a core covering device having a hollow spindle adapted to support a package of covering yarn and rotate it about a core, an adapter comprising a disk in the form of a head and having a barrel extending therefrom and adapted to iit said spindle and inside the package to center the package uponv the spindle, said disk having a thick outer edge against which the yarn can rest and a traveller ring of smaller diameter than the disk secured thereto, and a traveller for the covering yarn that travels upon said ring in a path that lies inwardly from the outer periphery of the disk.
