J. BOWERS.
INSEGT DESTROYER.
Patented Nov. 1,1881.
@Imran Srares PATENT Ormea.'
JOHN BOWERS, OF OLYDE, KANSAS.
lNSECT-DESTROYE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,844, dated November 1, 1881.
Application filed August 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN BOWERS, of Clyde, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Insect-Destroyers, and I do hereby declare that the Jfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention7 which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference beinghad tothe accompauyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple, convenient, and efficient means for the destruction ot bedbugs, and other pestiferous and predatory small vermin, whose habitat is the world, but whose lairs are inaccessible to ordinary means ot' human pursuits, and it consists in such construction and combination ot' parts as will be hereinafter m'ore fully speciiied and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved insectexterminator, shown broken away to show the parallel braces, and with drawer partly out. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view ofthe removable drawer having the heating apparatus.
Similar letters ot reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, A designates a rectangular chamber, made preferably of sheet metal, to which is attached a bail, a, for convenience in carrying, and a handle, a', for the purpose ot' holding the apparatus in position ofattack upon thcfastnesses of insects. The lower end ofthe chamber A is eut away in front to form an opening, through which the bottom drawer, B, having a knob, b, and detachable lamp O may be passed when it is desired to ignite or extinguish the latter, or for filling or cleaning. This drawer B forms the bottom of the casing A, and, like said casing, is rectangular in form, and is supported upon the inturned sides and back of the casino'. form draft the sides ofthe chamber A are perforated near the bottom, as shown at b', and for convenience in using my apparatus in the dark I place a window, b2, of glass or isinglass, in the front of the chamber' A.
From the upper inner sides of the chamber A depend two parallel curved supports, c c,
In order to secure a uni-V upon which rests the cylindrical boiler D, adapted to be held at any angle in which it may be desired to direct its funnel-shaped nozzle d. These tlat parallel curved supports answer the double purpose of supporting the boiler and preventing its turning too readily, as it would do if it were only pivoted at the ends. The boiler D is provided with an aperture, s, which may be funnel-shaped, for the introduction of water, and a long tapering nozzle, d, for the purpose of directing the steam to the desired place.
rIhe front part of the drawer B has an extension, B', to form a door to the corresponding aperture in the shell A, ent out for the passage ofthe lamp.
The manner of using my improved vermindestroyer is as follows: The boiler is lirst lled with water, and the lamp ignited, and when the water has reached the boiling-point the machine is ready for use.
The cylindrical boiler D may be readily turned on the parallel curved supports c c, thus enabling the nozzle d to be presented at any angle, and'held with security to the point of attack. The nozzle d is inserted into the cracks and crevices frequented by vermin, and the steam caused to penetrate every portion of the same until said vermin are entirely destroyed.
It will be seen that thefpenetrative forces of steam will enable it to be used for the destruction of vermin where no liquid or powder could be employed, and that the heat of the steam will destroy any form ot' insectivorous life.
A cover, hinged or otherwise secured, may be provided for the casing A and boiler D, it being provided with a vertical slot to allow of vertical movement ofthe nozzle d,- but this is not an essential feature of my invention.
rIhe apparatus described is simple, compact, inexpensive, easily used, and it renders the ordinarily tedious and disagreeable operation of destroying vermin interesting and expeditions.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is-
l. As an improvement in insect-destroyers, the rectangular casing A, having the parallel curved supports c c at its top, one at each end,
upon and turning on parallel curved supports c c, al1 combined, arranged, and operating substantially asherein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of' two witnesses.
JOHN BOVERS.
