Description

Get. 4, 194-9. I H. PERRYMAN.
CLOTHES HANGER Filed May 5, 1948 Inventor William H. Perry/wan Patented Oct. 4, 1949 oFFlcE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in attachments for use in vehicles.
An object of this invention is to suspend clothes hangers and the like within a conventional vehicle by means of an attachment which is removably fixed to the usual gutters supplied adjacent the edges of a roof of the vehicle.
Another object of this invention is to provide improved attaching means for clamping engagement with the vehicle gutters which are readily attached and detached.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character to be described which may be positioned in various locations within the vehicle in accordance with prerogative of the user of the invention and also in accordance with the specific type of vehicle and design thereof.
Another object of this invention is to provide a mechanically simplified device having utility in many environments, particularly that environment set forth above.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in the art, in following the description of the preferred form of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional View illustrating a portion of a conventional vehicle, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the invention which is shown in use in Figure 1.
This invention has been developed in order to provide a device for ready attachment and detachment to the gutters of the roof portion of a conventional Vehicle whereby clothes hangers, clothes and other articles may be easily and conveniently hung during the operation of the vehicle. The invention is so constructed that it may be positioned in various locations as desired.
A rod 10 is provided of any suitable material such as wood, commercial plastic, light metal or the like. This rod may be formed with grooves therein if it is found desirable in order to accommodate conventional hangers or may be smooth as is seen in Figure 2.
At the opposite ends of the rod I'll there are slots (unnumbered) in order to accommodate straps ['2 and [4 respectively. The strap 12 has a bracket l5 attached thereto by means of a curled edge 18. This edge firmly clamps the strap 12 in place and the opposite end of the said bracket I6 has a similar curved edge 20 for attachment with the gutter 22 of the portion of the vehicle illustrated. The strap 12 is of flexible material, which may be resilient, in order to be positioned between the door and the door jamb in locating the invention within a vehicle.
If it is found desirable the strap of flexible material may project through the window aperture of the vehicle in instances wherein there are no rear doors, as in certain types of conventional vehicles.
The said strap M is also of flexible material and is supplied with a plurality of spaced apertures 24 for cooperation with a buckle 26. A flexible member 28 is attached to the said buckle and has a bracket 16 attached thereto as is associated with the said strap i 2. It is readily apparent that the strap is cooperating with the buckle 26 and the strap 28 forms an adjustment device whereby various widths of vehicles may be compensated for and also, whereby slack may be taken up when it is found desirable as when the rod is heavily loaded. The gutter 30 of the vehicle is utilized in association with the last named bracket 16 for attachment as described above.
Of course, the straps l2 and I4 may be attached in the slots by any suitable means such as the rivets or pins 32, illustrated in the drawings.
From the foregoing a clear understanding of the present invention is deemed readily apparent. Also, it is understood that variations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
For use in vehicles having a. roof and gutters adjacent opposite sides of said roof, means for retaining articles suspended within the vehicle comprising a rod having flexible straps attached to each end thereof, brackets attached to said flexible straps, said brackets having curved terminal portions lockingly engaging the gutters of the vehicle roof, means for adjusting the effective length of one of said straps, said last mentioned means comprising a buckle, and said straps adapted to extend from the interior of the vehicle through a door opening to be clamped firmly by means of the door cooperating with the opening.
