Description
A. SUHILLING.
LABEL HOLDER. No. 248,353. Patented 0ct.[18,'1881.
H ews m llrurn STATES ATENT FFIQE.
AUGUST SCHILLlNG, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
LABEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,353, dated October 18, 1881.
Application filed April 26, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST SOHILLING, of the city and county of San Francisco, in the State of California, have made and invented a new and useful Improvement in La bel-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a label holding and exhibiting device for boxes, cans, cases, and packages in which articles and substances of tood, medicine, and like matter are generally put up or contained for sale, consumption, or use.
The object of my invention is to provide a holder for receiving and exhibiting a changeable label that when fixed or attached to the outside of a portable box, case, or package for containing merchandise will permit the label to be changed or adjusted as often as the contents of the receptacle are changed, so that a convenient and ready means of designating the contents is provided on the outside of such receptacles, and the same is rendered serviceable for various purposesor to contain different articles or substances by simply changing the label.
As hereinafter more particularly described, my invention consists, essentially, of a labelholder to be fixed or attached to or formed on the outside of a portable box, case, or other receptacle for containing merchandise, and a changeable or adjustable label adapted to be used therewith, so as to be securely held in a position to disclose to view the part of its face having the name or matter to be exhibited, while its remaining portion which may contain other names or matter to be used at other times, is covered up, concealed, and protected by and within the holder.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 sllOWS the application of my invention to a can or box. Fig. 2 is a view of the changeable label removed from the holder. Figs. 3, 4, and 6 show different forms in which my invention can be employed, Fig. at being a vertical section through the holder and label, Fig. 3; and Figs. 5 and 7 show forms of multiple labels to be used in such holders.
In applying my invention I fix or attach in a permanent manner upon the outside of the case, package, or other receptacle, a holder- A. This can be made of pasteboard, card, board, or like material gummed, glued, or otherwise secured on the outsideof the receptacle, but in a much better and more durable manner by being cut or stamped out of sheet metal and then secured in position. It can be made of any desired shape'to receive a label of any suitable form, and when placed and fixed against asurface a pocket orinclosed space is provided in which the label is inserted and held.
In the different forms of labels shown in the drawings a polygonal shape is used for providing a number of spaces to receive and show the names of several articles for which the box, case, or package can be used as a receptacle at different times, and for the purpose of disclosing and exhibiting one of such names or descriptive matter at a time and covering or concealing the remainder I cut out or provide an opening in the front of the holder, as at a, Figs. 1, 3, and 6, so that the portion of the label immediately behind this point or opening will not be covered.
The principal part of the label is held and contained between the front A and the surface behind it, against which it is fixed, and the label is secured and caused to remain in place until changed by making it of a thickness to fit closely into the holder, or by slipping behind the label after it is adjusted toa piece of cardboard or metal to act as a spring or a wedge to retain the label in proper position.
In applying the holder to cans, cases, or other packages where it is desirable or important to have the contents kept in a sealed or tightlyclosed condition, or where such receptacles are used for liquids or substances kept in liquids, the holder is adapted to be secured in place without cutting into, piercing, or making any opening in or through the sides or other part of the receptacle, or otherwise afiecting the serviceableness of the same. As the holder is applied also upon the outside of the can or other receptacle, none of the interior space is taken up or the capacity of the receptacle in any way reduced.
The label B is made to contain and present to view, as required, a number of names, titles, or descriptive matter to designate such arti- IOC 1 cles or substances as may from time to time be put into or kept in the receptacle, and it can be made of card-board or of metal suitably marked, engraved, or stamped with the required names.
Ifdesired to furnish a larger number of names on one label, both sides can be utilized, thus giving a multiple label capable of indicating a variety of articles or substances.
This invention is applicable to many useful purposes, and it is of value, particularly in its application to cans, boxes, or cases in which articles and substances of food, and for housekeeping purposes, medicines, drugs, and the like, are put up or kept on hand for sale and for household use, where one receptacle is required to contain at different times a variety of substances both to economize space and to dispense with the use or a number of separatet the original contents are consumed by having my invention applied thereto and furnished with each one, so that such receptacle would then be available and quickly used in housekeeping, Where now it is cast aside as of no use or value.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- like packages in 1. In combination with a polygonal label arranged to contain names and other descriptive matter on its several sides or faces, the holder A, of corresponding shape, adapted to be fixed and secured on the outside of a portable box, case, or other receptacle for containing merchandise, and having an opening, a arranged to expose one of the names or other matter on the label, and to cover and conceal the remaining ones when the label is placed therein, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a portable box, case, or other receptacle for containing merchandise, having a pocket or holder, A, upon the outside thereof, in which is an opening, a, the remov able and changeable label B, of a shape to fit and be received into said holder, provided with anumber of names or other descriptive matter arranged around the outer edge, each of which can be brought and retained in front of the opening, to be exposed in succession, while the remainder of the sections are covered and concealed from View, substantially as and for the purpose described.
Witness my hand and seal.
EDWARD E. ()SBORN, WM. F. CLARK.
