Description

; UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ HENRY H. THORP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,233, dated October I1, 1881.
Application filed March 7, 1881. (Modell) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, HENRY H. Tuner, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Types, of which the following'is a specification.
111" ordinary types the letters are formed on bodies of irregular widths bearing no special proportions to each other; hence, when set up in curved or sloping lines, they cannot be justified with the ordinary quads that are used in straight-line work, but only with quads especially designed for the purpose or with some substitute therefor, the shapes of the quads required varying with every change in the curve or slope of the lines. Hence the work of setting types of the ordinary construction in curved or sloping lines is very tedious.
The object of the invention is to produce, with types in position, curved and serpentine lines by'casting the faces of some of the types in diiferent positions on the type bodies and the types of runningwise widths that are multiples in one way and fractions in another of certain units. The invention consists in forming the type bodies according to their faces or letters of runningwise widths that are multiples of a measure of which the width of the body having the narrowest letter represents the unit, the wider type-bodies being cast or formed of runningwise widths increasing regularly in eighths, quarters, or other regular multiples of the unit, these widths of the type-bodies be- 5 ing also fractions of their bodywise heights.
The narrowest type-body,1, for instance beingot' half-pica width, the body of nextlarger size will be of full pica width, and the body of next size-the letter M, for iustancewill be of one-and-a-halt' pica Width; and the width of each tyne-body will be in fractionsofits height bodywise, the type I, for instance, having a width equal to one-quarterof its height, and the type M a width equal to three quarters of its height.
The drawing represents a form of the improved types set in sloping lines.
r In the drawing, A A represent my-improved types, formed in runningwise width in niultiples of the runniugwise width of the narrowest letter-the letter I-the width of each typebody being also a regular fraction ofits height, bodywise, so that quads B, of ordinary sizes, may be used to justify said types A A.
The faces of some of the types are cast in varying positions on their bodies.
Having thus described myinvention, 1 claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent Types made of runningwise widths that are multiples of a measure of which the runningwise width of the narrowest letter-body represents the unit, said widths being also regular fractions of the height of thetype bodywise, as described.
HENRY H. THORP.
