M ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 6, 1949 PUMP PRIMING MEANS Henry R. Welby, Detroit, Mich., assignor to Detroit Lubricator Company, Detroit, Mich., a
corporation of Michigan Application August 30, 1946, Serial No. 694,051
7 Claims. (01. 103203) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pumps and more particularly to automatically operable means for eliminating air or gas binding of reciprocating pumps.
An object of the invention is to provide means operable by the pump piston for opening the pump discharge valve.
Another object is to provide a novel valve structure for cooperation with and opening movement by a pump piston.
The invention consists in the novel construction and cooperative arrangement of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, to be taken as a part of this specification, there is fully and clear 1y illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in vertical section of a pump and its discharge valve operating means together with the pump driving mechanism, and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view in section showing the valve operating means in an actuated position.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral l designates the tank or casing of a force feed lubricator having a cover member 2 with a filling opening 3. Secured to the underside of the cover member 2, there is a pump having a casing 4 containing a flow chamber 5 which is intersected adjacent one end by a pump cylinder or chamber 6 in which a piston or plunger T is longitudinally reciprocal. The piston pumping end 8 projects into the chamber 5 during the final part of the compression or discharge stroke. The piston l is reciprocated by a lever 9 journaled on a shaft It and having an end portion ll seating against the end faces of a piston slot l2. The lever 9 is oscillated by a yoke I3 journaled on the shaft I!) and driven by an eccentric I 4. The yoke I3 has an adjustable abutment screw I5 cooperable with a shoulder i 6 on the lever 9 to determine the length of the piston working stroke.
The pump casing 4 extends downward into an oil reservoir I1 and has an inlet passage I8 alined with and leading to the chamber 5. A strainer I9 protects the inlet end of the passage I 8 which has a pair of inlet valve ports controlled by ball type check valves 20, 2!. At the outlet end of the chamber 5, there is a cylindrical recess in which a tubular outlet valve casing 22 slidably fits and is locked in position by a threaded sleeve 23. The casing 22 has an internal annular valve seat 24 providing an outlet port normally closed by a spring-pressed check valve 25, preferably a ball valve member, urged to its seat by a coil spring 26 held under compression by a collar 2'! press-fitted into the valve casing bore. On the inlet side of and concentric with the seat 24, there is an annular supporting member or hearing plate 28 which is locked in position by a metal ring 29. The plate 23 holds a sleeve 36 of tough hard metal forming a wear or scuff plate in a recess concentric with and on the inlet side of the valve seat. a valve operating member 3 I, in the form of a rod or post, having a disk-like or circular head portion 32 which substantially fits within the sleeve 30, but with suflicient lateral play for .free outflow of oil when lifted from the plate 28 as in Fig. 2. The head portion 32 is of a diameter such that upon rocking movement on its edge as a fulcrum, it will have camming engagement with the inlet side of the ball check valve 25 and lift it to an open position as in Fig. 2. The lower end of the rod 3| extends into the chamber 5 and into the path of travel of the piston end portion 8 so that the rod 3| is rocked or pivoted on the plate 28 to open the valve 25 as the piston l completes its discharge stroke.
The operation of the pump is as follows: On each inward or discharge stroke of the piston l, the end portion 8 Will rock the rod 3| to force the valve 25 from its seat, overcoming the force of the spring 26. If any air or gas is trapped in the chamber 5, the opening of the valve 25 by the member 3| will permit its escape through the outlet passage 33 so that on the piston suction stroke, oil will be drawn in through the inlet passage 18. The opening of the valve 25 will also permit oil which may be in the outlet passage 33 to drain back into the chamber 5 thereby aiding the pump to regain its prime. In normal operation, the disk 32 will be lifted by the discharging oil before the rod 3| is rocked by the piston I so that rocking of the rod 3| will not be required to open the valve 25.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed and is desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
