application November 7, 194i, mwah g4-r A 14 Claims. (Chaman-1191 Y My invention relates to 'line tightening clothes line brackets, and more particulaijly to anradiustable `line tightening clothesline bracket for ,use iin basements and similar places. This is a continuation in part of my application Serial No. 754,494, filed June 13, 1947, on Line I tightening adjustable clothesline bracket.
It is theprincipal purpose of -my invention to provide a bracket that is suitable for support-V ing clotheslines in a basement. In the use v of my invention the bracketsnare secured to the ceiling beams or hoor ioists Aatfthe ceiilngvof the basement and. are adapted-to be lmounted on such beams or joistsrthat extend `either -in the Y direction in Which the lines are to `extender crosswise thereof. v
It is more particularly a purpose of :myli-nvfen-V rtion to provide .bracketsrof the above mentioned character that are easily installedand-whichrequire no maintenance after vinstallation Yand which are adjustablein length in iorder to locate 1 I the clothesline at .a desirableY vheight yeven *Y Fig. 4 1i$i u though the ybasements in which the `same are to Fg2 Y ,o .i A be used. are of various heights. o A d 'isna Siiiitiil fthe jlihe i525 fof It is a further purpose of .my'inventiongto pro- 25 Fig'. 1, and' vide a bracket of the above mentioned character, Fig 6 which is so mounted on-afiioor'doistiorjoists that the same can be swung Yout of normal .operative position so thatthe 'bracket cltheslines will be out of the Way clo'se to the joists. However, by securing the members II and I2 together by securement of the anges or legs I1 and 23 as shownin Fig. l, the resulting bracket can be secured to the joist I8 as shown in Fig. 1, or to the side of a joist I0', as shown in Fig. 2. However, when the bracket is secured to the side of the joist I0', then the bolt I8 is passedvthrough one of the openings I4 in the leg I5, as will be obvious from Fig. 2.
A bracing member 26 is provided, which may be bent so as to provide anend portion 21 at the lower end thereof, through which a bolt 28 is passed, said bolt being also passed through one of the openings 22 in the leg 23 of the member I2 to secure' the lower end of the brace 25 to the bracket member. Said brace is further provided with a bent end-29 at the upper end thereof, which is engagedwith the joist 36 next to the joist I0 and secured thereto bymeans of a bolt 3l, said bolt-being provided with a washer 32 and a nut 33". In order to swingthe bracket about the axis of the bolt I8, it is necessary to detach the brace 26 from the bracket by removal of the bolt 28 when it is desired to swing the bracket to an out-of-the-way position adjacent the joist I0, said bolt being, preferably, provided with a wing nut to facilitate removal. It will be noted that the brace 26 is secured to the joist bracket I2. The bottom flange or horizontal leg 36 is provided with a slot 31 therein extending longitudinally thereof. A slidable block 38 which has a substantially circular body portion has a downwardly extending reduced portion 39, which is also circular and which is mounted in the slot 31, thus providing for sliding movement of the block 38 in the slot longitudinally of the foot portion I3 in the slot 31.
A screw-threaded opening 4I) is provided in the block 38 that extends transversely thereof and a screw-threaded opening 4I, that intersects the opening 40, extends axially of the member 38 and of the reduced portion 39, opening out through the bottom face of said reduced portion 39. A screw-threaded headed member 42 engages in the screw-threaded opening 4I and extends loosely through an opening 43 in a channel member 44, which has anges 45 that lie on 38 on the side thereof remote from that on which the bracket is secured to the joist I6.
When the bracket is arranged in the position shown in Fig. 2 the brace 26' is not bent but is left flat, and a bolt 28" is used for securing the lower end of the bracket 26 Vto the leg 25 of the lower bracket member I2, being passed through one of the openings 24., preferably, the lowermost one, for securing the bracing member to the bracket. Also-the upper end of the brace 26 is left straight .and abolt 3l' is passed through one of a plurality of openings 34 in the upper endof vsaid brace and through an opening in the joist I0 spaced a substantial distance from the opening through which the bolt I8 is passed. In order to swing the bracket into an out-of-the-way position when arranged on a joist as shown in Fig. 2, the bolt l28 can be removed to permit such swinging-about the axis of the bolt I8. While bolts are shown in the drawings for securing the braces and the brackets to opposite sides of the foot I3, and also extends through an opening 46 in an angle member 41, which angle member extends transversely of the channel member 44 and is xed thereto, as by means of rivets 48. Thus the angle member 41 is guided for movement lengthwise of the foot portion I3 by means of the slot 31 cooperating with the reduced portion 39 and also by means of the anges 45 of the channel member, which lie closely adjacent the upstanding leg 35 of the foot portion I3 and the horizontal leg 35 thereof.
The angle member 41 constitutes a line carrying member having a vertical leg portion IIS, which is provided with a plurality of uniformly spaced openings 50 therein, the number being variable, but five being shown in the particular embodiment illustrated in the' drawings. Thus five parallellines can be hung from the line carrying member 41 and a similar line carrying member that is provided on a similar bracket at a predetermined spaced distance from the one illustrated, as will be obvious. The lines that are mounted on the line carrying angle member il may be of any desired material or character, a line 5I being shown, which is provided with a knot 52 at the end thereof for securing the same to the line carrying member 41.
Y A screw-threaded shaft 53 is engaged in the screw-threaded opening 40 of the block 38, said shaft having a collar 54 welded thereto, which engages the outer face of the leg 24 of the lower bracket member I2 and having a crank portion 55 thereon that is provided with a crank handle 56, by means of which the shaft can be rotated. It will be obvious that rotation of the crank 55 in the proper direction will cause the block 38 to be drawn toward the end of the foot portion I3 that joins the upstanding part of the lower bracket member I2, whereby the lines 5I can be tensioned as may be desired. Due to the provision of the foot portion and the relatively long slot for guided movement of the block 38, a very substantial adjustment in the position of the line carrying member 41 can be obtained, and inasmuch as there is a relatively fine screw-thread provided in the opening 40 and on the screwthreaded portion of the shaft 53, the adjusting means will be self locking so as to hold the lines 5I undertension to any desired extent.
In placing the brackets in position on the ioists, said brackets are spaced such a distance apart that with the blocks 38 on the brackets near the extremity of the foot portion I3 remote vfrom the upstandingV portion 6U of Vthe lower depending below said foot portion, and extend ing transversely thereof, a channel member fixed to said line carrying member, means for securing said line carrying member to the reduced portion of said blockwith the flanges of said channel member in embracing relation to said foot portion, and means for adjusting said block lonn gitudinally of said slot.
9. A clothesline. bracket comprising an upper bracket member angular in cross section, means for pivotally mounting said upper bracket member on a support, a lower bracket member having an elongated body portion angular in cross section longitudinally adjustably mounted on said upper bracket member and having a foot portion angular in cross section extending laterally from said elongated body portion, a bracing member connected with said lower bracket member adjacent said foot portion, a line carrying member extending transversely of said foot portion, and means for adjusting the position of said line carrying member longitudinally of said foot portion.
