FOLDING BOAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,827, dated October 4, 1881.

Application filed June 13, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK M. HUNT and JOHN J. STRANAHAN, of Chagrin Falls, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boats; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

Our invention relates to portable or folding boats; and it consists in a peculiar construc tion, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of our boat ready for use. Fig. 2 shows the same folded, ready to be transported. Fig. '3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view ofour boat, showing the manner ofjoining the two parts together, and also the construction of the stretching mechanism on the stern-piece. Fig. 4 is a detached viewof the rowloek. Fig. 5 is a detached view of a portion of the gunwale, showing the manner of attaching the rowlock. Fig. 6is a detached view of the locking mechanism. Fig. 7 represents the manner of carrying our boat by means of straps shown in Fig. l.

A represents a boat-frame, which is formed oflongitudinal and transverse ribs, and made in two parts, B and U. The parts B and O are held together by means of a locking device, (shown more clearly in Fig. 6 of the drawings) said locking device. consisting of a latch, D, one end of which is pivotally attached to one of the parts, B, and the other end being provided with a slot, to, which engages with apin, 1), on the other part, 0, of the boat, said pin 1) in turn being provided with a thumb-nut, c, by means of which said latch D is held securely in place. The longitudinal ribs of the parts B and O are made some longer than the others. Our reason for forming them thus is to break the joints when the parts B and O are joined together, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.

d d are brace-rods, which extend from the gunwale on each side of the part O to the bottom of the same, and serve to strengthen the sides of the boat.

rowlocks are formed as shown in Fig. 4=ViZ., of a frame provided with two recesses, c e, and a tubular middle portion, g, in which rests the oar-swivel. The recesses e e, in connection with bolts h h, Fig. 5, serve as a means for securing the rowlock in place on the-gnnwale.

G is a stern-piece, which we provide with one or more adjusting or tightening screws, 1' i, which serve, as shown in Fig. 3, to stretch or tighten the flexible covering H.- The screws 1' 6 act against an'anxiliary stern-piece, I, which is attached to the flexible covering H.

7t are straps, which are detachably attached to the bottom of the boat in such-a manner that when it is desired to transport the boata short distance it may be carried on the back, as shown in Fig. 7, the arms ofthe person carrying said boat being passed under said straps 7c 70, thus throwing the weight of the boat on the shoulders.

K is a metallic shield, which is securely attached to the covering H at the lower part of the bow, and serves to protect the same from wear or injury.

For transporting the boat a long distance it may be folded as shown in Fig. 2, the part 0 resting inside the part B, and the covering H folded over or removed and packed inside the frame.

What we claim is- 1. The combination, with the two hinged sections of a folding boat, of a latch pivoted to one section, said latch provided with an open slot in its free end, and a bolt provided with a thumb-nut secured to the other section, the parts being arranged as shown and described, whereby the latch when fastened in place serves as a brace, substantially as set forth.

2. A folding boat composed of two hinged sections, each section being provided with ribs, that overlap the joint between the two sections of the boat, substantially as set forth.
