KNOT-TYING DEVICE FOR GRAIN-BINDERS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 247,748, dated October 4, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY CURTIS, of Chicago, in the county ot' Cook'and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful KnotTyingDevice for Grain-Binders, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a plan viewof the entire device; Fig. 2, an enlarged transverse section at the line xx; Fig. 3, an end elevation; Fig. 4, a plan viewoftheknot-tyingmechanism; Fig.5,aplan view of the cutting device; Figs. 6, 7 8, and 9, enlarged details, showing the different stages in the operation of tying the knot; and Fig. 10, an enlarged detail of the springfstud b.
My invention consists of the mechanism herein shown and described for constituting aknottying device for mechanically tying knots for fastening the cords or ropes used in grain-binders as bands for the sheaves of grain.
As shown in the drawings, A is the bed-piece of the device, provided at one end with the table A', on which the knot-ty ing mechanisn is located.
B is a sliding head or traveler, adapted to slide on the guides B by any suitable reciprocating mechanism, for 'the purpose of imparting to the different parts of the tying mechanism their requisite movements, as hereinafter described. Said traveler is provided with the spring-studs 1),?1, and b2, which are so arranged that they will readily yield to a pressure when it is applied to one side of them, but when applied to the opposite side they remain intiexible. It is also provided with a wedge-shaped lia-nge, b3, and a projecting arm, b4, for the purposes hereinafter set forth.
C is a pinion attached to the sleeve c, which has a partial rotative motion in the bearings c on the table A. A lip, c2, extends from the front end of said sleeve, and has attached to it a Wing or pallet, c3, arranged perpendicularly to the axial line ot' the sleeve to move between the vertical plates a and af, attached to the table A.
D is a pin or bolt arranged to slide endwise in the sleeve c, but not partakin g of the rotatory motion of the sleeve. Said pin is prou vided with iuted grooves running lengthwise, into which the cords are pressed and retained against any strain produced by the expansion of the sheave or by the rubbing action of the lip c2. Near the front end of said pin a mortise is cutcrosswise and horizontally through it, and at its rear end the lugs d. are xed to prevent the pin from being rotated by the sleeve c.
E is a sliding rack, gearing into the pinion C to impart a rotatory motion to the sleeve c.
F is a tucker, made in a curved form and having an oscillatory movement in circular ways formed in the table A. It is so arranged that its contracted pointj' will enter the rnortise d of the sliding pin D. Said tucker is connected by the rod f to the lever I, from which its motion is derived.
Gr is a bifurcated arm having one arm,g, arranged above the table A to move against the face of the vertical plate a., and the other arm, g', below the table, and extending back of the face-line of the plate a to the edge of the wing c3 when the arm g lies against the face of the plate c. Said bifurcated arm is pivoted to the table A', and is connected by the rod g2 to the arm g3, pivoted to the bed-pieceA, and provided with the retractive spring g1 and a pendent ea-r, g5, against which the spring-stud b ot' the traveler B engages when the traveler is moving toward the table A to force the arm g in contact with the vertical plate c. r

I is a lever, pivoted to the table A', and provided with a pendent dange, fi, arranged atan angle to the center line ot' the lever, as shown in Fig. 1, against which the spring-stud b of 9o the traveler engages, so as to move said lever-f and thereby impart to the tucker F its re quired motion for carrying the point of the tucker into the mortise of the pin D. Aspring, i', connects the lever I to the bed-piece A, to produce a quick return movement of said le ver.
J is a lever, pivoted to the bed-piece A and connected at one end to the sliding rack E, for the purpose of imparting to said rack its requisite motion. Said lever has three pendent flanges. The first one,j, being at the free end of the lever, has its major part arranged in a curved line at an angle to the center line mortise d ofthe pin D, as shown in Fig. 8. The wedge-shaped ange b3 of the traveler moves the detent to release the arm g, and then the projecting point b1 of the traveler strikes the arm k and turns the rock-shaft K to draw back the pin D, as shown in Fig. 9. The ends of the cord, being in the mortise d, are by this movement carried through the loops that were formed around the pin D. By the expansion of the bundle ot' grain the loops are drawn snugly around the ends ot' the cord so as to form a close knot. As thevtraveler moves back on its return movement the spring k forces back the rock-shaft K and returns the pin D toits normal position, so as to release the ends of the cords, and freeing the tied bundle, so thatit may be discharged from the machine. rlhe return of the traveler to the positions shown in Fig. l restores all the parts to theirpositions for a repetition of the operation described.
By grooving the pin D, as herein described, provision is made for retaining a Hrm hold of the cord against the strains thrown upon it by the expansive force of the bundle ot' grain, and against the rubbing action of the lip c2 and Wing o3, by which the cord is pressed into the grooves Without producing any damage to it. When desired, the tucker F may be made straight and arranged to slide in straight guides fixed perpendiculary to the center line of the pin D; but I preferably curve it, as herein shown and described.
