Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on I line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the golf ball driving device includes a supporting structure or housing consisting of upper and lower tubular sections I and II arranged in vertical alignment and disposed above and below an intermediate section or casing I3 having parallel top and bottom walls Il and I5 to which the upper and lower sections I0 and Il are secured by studs I6 extending through the flanged ends thereof. The intermediate section or casing I3 is of rectangular shape in crosssection and is formed with aligned apertures I1 'j upper section* I0 isproviizled lwith la "22 "orjt t er "equivalent "ini'hef'pppanatermin wang |54 a'ridflfs tinten-apen "into `the upper and *lower @tubular :sections Io ably ts `withinfthe "upper and lower sect irfg "a cylindrical flower end portion 'threaddly "secured 1in 'th`eupper end 'of "saidJplunger Jand j above said 'cylindrical portion the said jbar `)is eitrerne upper end'bf the 'bar 'bentjatja ght recess 30 therein by screws 3| or other fastening means to dispose the outer faces of the teeth substantially ilush with the adjacent periphery of the plunger. The rack 2,9 is arranged in engagement with a gear 32 aiXed to a shaft 33 journaled in bearing bosses 34 formed on the opposite side walls of the intermediate section or casing I3. The inner end of the arm 21 is secured by studs 35 to the outer end of the shaft 33 which protrudes through an opening in the side wall 36 of the intermediate section or casing I3.
Secured to the base I8 in offset relation thereto is a golf ball supporting member 31 having a bifurcated forward end and a iball receiving depression 38 in the upper face thereof for supportingY a golf ball in the path of travel of the strikingihead 28 of the arm 21, the longitudinal edges 39 formed by the furcations and extendingforwardly from the depression 38 functioning to guide and accurately direct the bail after it is hit by the driving head 28. The golf ball supporting member 31 is secured tothe forward end of a leaf spring 40 the opposite end of which is adjustably secured to a laterally extending bar 4| by means of a wing nutY 42, the bar 4| being adjustably secured to the-base I8 by a Wingv nut 43. Y
Constructed in this manner the golf ball supporting member 31;, may beVY disposed in angular relation to Ythe base I8 and to the path of travel of the driving head 28 so that when the ball is struck by the driving head the longitudinal' edges 39 functionYV to direct the ball in a direction cor- .A
respondinglto the angular setting of the supporting member 31. In addition to adjusting z the settingof said supporting member by clamping the bal-j 4i and the supporting member 31 various angular relations by means ofthe wing Ynuts-42 and 43, the driving head 28 is connected with the arm 21 for disposing either oi" the faces 44 or '45 forwardly for striking engagement Vwith the ball, the striking face 45 being at an anglefwhich will effect a greater elevation of the ball than the striking face 44. Fori-this purpose theY striking head 28 is pivotally mounted on bolt 46 which protrudes through an open- 1 ing in the arm 21 and is adapted to be secured thereto by a wing nut 41. The forward ends of y the furcations of the supporting member 31 are beveled as at 48 to provide means whereby the wstrikingrheadV 28 will pass over the endl of the supporting member 31 orrits return swing by Vcamming the said supporting member downwardly should thehead be turned so as to engage rthe said. beveled edges, the leaf spring 40 'resiliently'mountinfg the supporting member31 for such purpose.
. In use and operation the operator is posi- ,i tioned at the rearhof the supporting structure with the right foot disposed upon the rear of the base I8 for assisting in steadying the device whilerthe left hand of the operator grasps the handle 20 for holdingfr the supporting structure in an. upright position the operator first having adjusted the supporting member 31 in the direction that the ball is to travel, and hav- .ing arranged the striking head 28 as desired.
The, operator then grasps the handle 26 Lwith his right hand and forces the plunger 23 quickly Vdownward to effect a rapid downward swinging f of the arm 21 so that the head 28 strikes the` ball v`supported in the depression 38 ascindicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing and drives the same forl wardly therefrom.
' supporting member, a leaf spring connecting said golf ball supporting member with said supporting structure for supporting a golf ball in the path oftravelof said driving head and forwardlyr of said fsupporting structure and means carried by saidplunger and said arm for effecting swinging'y movement of the arm upon reciprocatory movement of the plunger.
l 1 2.- In va golf ball-driving device, va supporting structure, a handle carried by said supporting structure at Vthe upper end thereof andproject- VVVing laterallyr therefrom, a plunger guidedly Number mounted in said supporting structure for reciprocatory movement and provided with an Aoutwardly extending handle for imparting movement to said plunger, an arm located eXteriorly of said supporting structure and mounted thereon for swinging movement, said arm having a driving head at the free end thereof, a golf ball supporting member, resilient means connecting said golf ball supporting member with said supporting structure at the base thereof and extending forwardly thereof for supporting a golf ball in the path of travel of said driving head and forwardlynf said supporting structure and means ycarried by said plunger and said arm for effecting swinging movement of the arm upon reciprocatory movement of the plunger.
