positione I l or-ll d'aof therespective-slows" andazfiiaccordlms 3 to whether the movable handle 9 is to be in its inoperative position or operative position.
For example, in Fig. 1 the movable handle is in its operative position and the movable jaw is raised so that its resilient facing I1 is in contact with the lower edge of the fixed jaw. It will be noted that the lower or looped end 32 of the link I5 is at this time positioned within the ofi-set portion II of the slot Ill. To lower the movable jaw I6 it is merely necessary to move the handle 9 in a direction away from the fixed handle 4, and this movement causes the link I5 to be drawn downwardly by the downward swing of the segmental plate I2. Since the looped end of the link I5 is confined within the off-set portion II of the slot II] in plate I2 there is an operative connection between the link and the segment I2 to cause the link I5 to be drawn down and the movable jaw brought down with it. In other words, as long as the looped end 32 of the link I5 is confined in the cit-set end II of the slot I it will be apparent that any movement of the handle 9 will be transmitted to link I and the movable jaw raised or lowered accordingly. As the link I5 is raised or lowered as above explained, its looped end will ride freely in the slots I3.
When it is desired to fold up the handle 9 to the position shown in Fig. 2, and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the looped end 32 of the link I5 is manually shifted out of the off-set portion II of slot II] and into the oif-set part I4 of the slot I3. This movement of the looped end 32 of the link can be'performed while the parts of the device are in the position shown in Fig. 1, at which time the ofi-set portions Id and II are in alignment radially of the segmental plates I. The resiliency of the link I5 enables it to be readily sprung into either of the oiI-set portions of the slots.
When the looped end 32 of the link I5 is placed in the off-set portion I4 of slot I3, it will then be apparent that it is uncoupled from the segment I 2 so that the movable handle 9 can then be swung on its pivot 8 without aifecting the link I5, which remains stationary, and holds the movable jaw I6 in closed position relative to the fixed jaw 2. The movable handle can be swung upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2 to bring its looped end directly below the movable jaw, thus decreasing the width of the device and rendering it compact and easily carried in a handbag or the like. While the looped end 32 of the link I5 is contained in the olT-set portion It, and the movable handle is swung, the slot It rides freely about the looped end 32 and movement of the handle 9 to its folded position is free and unrestricted.
Through the arrangement disclosed, means is provided by which the movable handle, which normally protrudes to such an extent as to make the device somewhat inconvenient to carry in a small handbag, is folded to cause the structure to be rendered compact. At the same time, the folding of the handle as above explained, causes the movable jaw to be locked in its closed position, whereby the entry of objects between the jaws with resultant damage or injury to the contacting surfaces of the jaws is prevented.
While we have shown one embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that the same is not to be restricted thereto but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims.
What we claim is:
1. In an eyelash curling device, a stationary handle portion having a slotted part, a movable handle pivotally attached to the slotted part,
said movable handle being provided with a slot, a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted for movement to and from the fixed jaw, a link connected to the movable jaw and having a part located in the slots, each slot having an off-set end portion to receive the link whereby the link can be moved with the movable handle portion when the link is positioned in the olT-set portion of the slot in the movable handle or else can be held immovable when the link is in the off-set portion of the slot in the stationary handle portion while the handle is swung on its pivot.
2. In an eyelash curling device, a stationary handle carrying a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted for movement to and from the fixed jaw, a movable handle pivoted on the fixed handle and being provided with a slot having an off-set portion, a link attached to the movable jaw and having a part located in the slot and being capable of movement to position it in the ofi-set portion of the slot, said link when located in the off-set portion of the slot being moved to actuate the movable jaw by manual pivotal movement of the movable handle.
3. In an eyelash curling device as provided for in claim 2, wherein the stationary handle is provided with a lateral segmental extension and the movable handle is pivoted in said extension, and said extension is provided with a slot in which the link is moved upon manual actuation of the movable handle.
4. In an eyelash curling device, a stationary handle having a laterally projecting segmental extension provided with an arcuate slot, a movable handle having a segmental head at one end pivoted in said extension and also provided with an arcuate slot, a movable jaw, a link attached to said jaw at one end and having its other end disposed in both of the slots, each of the slots having an ofi-set portion, arranged whereby the movable handle can freely pivot without movement of the link when the link is positioned in the off-set portion of the slot in the segmental extension and whereby the movable handle will actuate the link and cause it to move the movable jaw when the link is positioned in the ofi-set portion of the slot in the head of the movable handle.
5. In an eyelash curling device, a stationary handle carrying a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted on the stationary handle and movable to and from the fixed jaw, a link attached at one end to the movable jaw, a segmental extension projecting from the stationary handle, a movable handle pivoted to said extension, the movable handle having a segmental head formed with an arcuate slot, the slot having an oil-set portion at one of its ends, the extension on the stationary handle having an arcuate slot provided with an off-set portion at one of its ends, said off-set portion extending toward the pivot, the link having its second end disposed in the slots and capable of shifting movement into either of the off-set portions of said slots, whereby the link when shifted into one of said off-set portions will remain stationary while the movable handle is pivotally moved and whereby said link when positioned in the other off-set portion will be moved upon manual movement of the movable handle.
6. In an eyelash curling device, a stationary handle having a slot, a movable handle having a slot, a jaw-moving element in the form of a link having a portion fitted into said slots, each of the slots having an off-set end portion whereby the link when fitted into one of said off-set portions,
will permit free pivotal movement of the movable handle without causing movement of said link.
7. In an eyelash curling device as provided for in claim 6, wherein the oif-set portion of the slot in the movable handle is arranged to cause movement of the link when the link is fitted into said off-set portion.
8. In an eyelash curling device, a stationary handle and a movable handle, the movable handle having a segmental plate at one of its ends, a clevis carried by the stationary handle in which the plate on the movable handle is pivoted, the plate having an arcuate slot provided at one end with an ofi-set portion, the clevis having an arcuate slot provided at one end with an ofi-set portion, a jaw-actuating link having an end located 6 in both slots and adapted to have said end disposed in either of the ofi-set portions of the slots.
