3 Claims.
The invention relates to sash and more particularly a mullion used in joining window sash, usually steel, together.
Heretofor various forms of mullions have been used, but the best of these are objectionable because they are composed of three or four separate pieces and necessitate the use of several distinct tools for installation. The object of this invention is to provide a mullion in which there is only one piece to handle, and this requires the use of but one tool.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mullion in which the clamping means is so constructed and arranged relative to the center piece of the mullion as to permit a wide range of adjustment of the adjoining sash units secured together by the mullion.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter described and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

Referring to the drawings, the mullion herein consists of a center piece 6 preferably a steel T-bar and a plurality of clamping members 1. Each clamping member 1 comprises a fiat rectangular steel bar 8 carrying a set screw 9 adjustably mounted in one end thereof.
The T-bar 6 has its web l0 provided at spaced intervals with elongated openings II, the upper sides l2 of which form a fulcruming surface.
With the above construction, the mullion center piece 6 is positioned so as to have its base flanges l3 in abutting engagement with the adjoining sides of the sash units [4, and then the bars 8 are passed through the openings II and the screws 9 turned down into engagement with the adjacent sash as shown in Fig. 3. In doing this it will be observed that the edge or surface l2 acts as a fulcrum about which the bar 8 can swing and that tightening the screw 9 brings said bar into engagement with said fulcruming surface and causes the other end of the bar 1 to swing down into clamping engagement with the other sash unit. This is a single bar or clamp and with its screw simultaneously clamps the adjacent sash units against the inner faces of the T-bar, and only a screwdriver in case of a screw or wrench in case of a headed screw or bolt is necessary to secure the clamp in position, so that the other hand of the operator is free to position the parts. As shown in Fig. 1, several of the clamping members are used to make the complete joint, the members being spaced the desired distance apart. Thus it will be noted that the clamping means comprises but a single part to be handled and that only one tool is necessary to secure this part in operative position. It is also to be noted that the elongation of the opening ll permits the bar I to be positioned at different angles relative to the T-bar without effecting its clamping action and that this permits a wide range of adjustment of the adjoining sashes, one position being shown in Fig. 2 and the other much closer positionbeing shown in Fig. 5.
We desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are included in the claims.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. In a mullion, the combination of a T-bar center piece having an opening in its web providing a fulcrum, a clamp bar fulcrumed in said opening and having one end clampingly engaging a sash frame member to the base of the T-bar, and a threaded member adjustably carried by the other end of the clamp bar to clampingly engage the other sash frame and the base of the T-bar.
2. In a mullion, the combination of a T-bar center piece having an elongated opening in its Web providing an extended fulcruming surface, a clamp bar fulcrumed on said surface to engage at one end with a sash member to clamp it between said bars, and a movable member adjustably carried by the other end of the clamp bar to engage at this end with the other sash member to clamp the same between said bars.
3. In a mullion, the combination of a center T-bar having an opening in its web providing a fulcrum, a clamp bar fulcrumed in said opening and having one end clampingly engaging a sash frame member to the center bar and the other end provided with an adjustable member clampingly engaging the other sash frame to the center bar.
