This invention relates to combination tools for special purposes and more particularly it is an object oi the invention to provide a tool particularly useful in the adjustment of lathes and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool a-s described capable of assuming a shape for providing great leverage for certain operations and capable of folding to a more compact and handy shape for' use during other operations.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a tool as described which is extensible for reaching an adjustment point on a lathe or the like, from a distance.
Yet another object of the invention resides in the provision of a tool having in combination the said leverage and the said extensibility.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lathe wrench having a plurality of wrenching jaws upon a handle portion thereof and also having an arm portion foldable with respect to the handle portion, the arm portion also being provided with wrenching means thereon.
Other and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof.

The lathe wrench of this invention comprises a handle portion lil, preferably formed in the shape of a flat rectangular bar having wrenching jaws or notches l2, i4 and lli extending therethrough in a direction transverse thereof.
The notches l2, i4 and l preferably have flat non-circular walls for engaging nuts, bolts and the like, as are commonly employed on lathes and similar machinery for facilitating the adjustment thereof. The jaws or notches i2, I4 and l5 are each of a diiferent size for performing a different operation.
The handle portion lli may also be provided with an opening i8 therethrough, the latter being of square or other non-circular shape, so that the walls thereof will be adapted for engaging other nuts and bolts and the like. The handle portion l is further provided with an elongated slot 30, disposed longitudinally therethrough from 2 the wide, nat sides thereof, the slot being provided with two parallel side-walls.
The purpose of the slot 30 is for receiving an elongated arm portion lll of the device, and the slot 3G is of such length and size with respect to the arm portion 4! that the latter may be received between the end walls of the slot 3B at times when the arm portion 40 is disposed in longitudinal alignment with the handle portion It.
The arm portion [it] is provided with two parallel sides d2 and 463 which latter are spaced apart a slightly lesser distance than the parallel walls of the slot i. Thus, the sides 42 and 44 of the arm 40 are respectively disposed opposite the parallel side walls of the slot 3B. The sides 42 and 44 of the arm portion are preferably each provided with a longitudinally disposed elongated recess 60, the recesses 68 being disposed in substantial parallelism with each other.
The arm portion 40 is provided with any suitable wrenching means secured thereto. Such means preferably comprises integral squared ends l@ and l2 which latter are for the particular purposes of engaging between the walls of the socket receptacles of jaws, lathe chucks or the like of complemental size.
The arm portion lit is secured to the handle portion i5 by means now to be described. Such means includes the provision of a hole 89 eX- tending completely through the handle portion iii in a direction transverse with respect to the latter and at a right angle to the parallel side walls of the slot 3i). The hole 8i! is preferably of circular shape and is provided with a portion disposed on either side of the slot 30.
Two nibs 82 and 8d are respectively disposed extending partially into the respective portions of the hole 8@ and are disposed partially protruding outwardly of the oppositely disposed parallel, longitudinal walls of the slot 3G. The nibs 82 and 8d are preferably of circular shape in cros-s-section and are adapted to slide longitudinally of the hole 80.
Resilient means 86, preferably comprising two coiled compression springs, are disposed in the two respective portions of the hole adjacent each of the nibs 82 and 84.
Two set screws Sil are provided and threadedly secured, one each, in the half-portions of the hole it and on opposite sides of the springs 86 from the nibs 82 and 8f3 for the purpose of regulating the urge of the springs 86 against respective ones of the nibs 82 and 84. The nibs 82 and 84 are oppositely disposed in axial alignment and are preferably circular and of widths similar to but very slightly less than the widths of the slots 60. The screws 9B are preferably of the headless countersinkable type.
An aperture 92 (see Fig. 2a), and similar to the 3 hole Sli, extends through the handle l from the outer edge thereof to the adjacent wall of the slot 31B. The purpose of the aperture 92 is to threadedly yreceive a screw Il@ :shown inFigures 3 an-d 4.
The screw l Il) is adapted to bear against a third resilient means S4, preferably similar in all respects to the coiled spring 3%. The third resilient means 94 is disposed in said aperture adjacent the screw Ill). Also in said aperture, Iand onfthe other side of said third compression spring, a third nib Il`2 is disposed, the latter lbeing shown in Fig. 2a..
The third nib H2 extends outwardly of the said aperture and isadaptedto be receivedin one or the other of two like in'dentations |29.
The indentations .H20 are disposed in the adjacentside 42 of the arm 49, with respect to the nib 112. Preferably the indentations l2!) are of circular ishape having rounded concave walls and the third nib .is provided With .a rounded convex outer end for engagement with the walls of the indentation |20.
"I'he purpose of the third nib and the indenta- .tions |20 is so that at times when an operator causesthe arm 40 to be disposed longitudinally .inthe slot 3D, thethird nib l i2 will engage in one .of `the indentations l2!! for holding the arm llll'in such position. The indentation l 2li and the third 'nibarerounded so that .an operator may easily cause thethird'nibto release the arm 4D to permit th'e latter to pivot with respect to the handle 1.0 for purposes later described, the third nib 'I l'2iat such times becoming disengagedfrom one of the indentations.
In operation, various 4wrenching adjustments yon Adilerent 'parts of machinery can be made by `using the notches l2, I4 and I6 and the noncircular'op'ening I3 in a usual wrenching manner. 'At such times vthe arm 4E! will be disposed longitudinally-with respect to-the handle iil'and will be received in the opening 3l! thereof, being held `inplaceloythe engagement of the third nib H2, ysee'i'ig201 with one of the indentations I'2 Attimeswhen it isdesired to make an adjustment on Va lathe chuck or the like, the arm 40 is Yplaced in latransverse position with respect to the *handle lll. The handle I ll may beplaced at any `desired position along the recess 6D of the arm Infor causing the larm ll to extend outwardly therefrom a sufficient distance for adjusting a lathe chuck at `times when the kmaterial being 'worked on in the lathe protrudes outwardly Ialongside the lathe chuck.
AThis'invention has provided a combination tool :capable of assuming a shape forproviding great fleverage, capable of folding to a more compact -shape,.and capable of being extended'outwardly sufficiently for reaching an adjustment point on falathe'orthe like despite adjacent obstructions.
