This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sanitary holders of the kind disclosed in my U. S. Patent No. 2,373,651, in connection with the instant invention.

Said holder is made by folding a sheet of paper or the like in such manner that the holder incorporates an upwardly directed central collapsible apex portion, and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex pocket portions into which side pocket portions, after the holder has been inverted, may be engaged ones fingers for compressing the side apex pocket portions toward each other by collapsing said central apex portion. Incidental to such collapse, the then bottoms of the side pocket portions may be moved in toward each other.

Also according to the patent aforesaid, artificial gripping fingers are mounted on said sheet in such manner that with the holder inverted as above, said artificial fingers are projected beyond said bottoms of the side pocket portions and serve to grip, hold and pick up various articles, while direct contact between the hand and the article is avoided, and therefore the fingers of the hand are shielded from the chemicals in the articles and Vice versa.

ccording to the present invention which may be used best in connection with a folded holder modified from that of the patent aforesaid, there are provided improved constructions for the artificial fingers, these fingers below called the tongs, and improved ways of connecting said tongs to and mounting them on said sheet, and an improved behavior for the holder when used in picking up all kinds of articles, as for instance, wads of cotton batting, pieces of sterile gauze and other like articles having to be manually handled in beauty parlors, nurseries, hospitals and home sick rooms; candies and other food units or masses and all other articles and objects, whatever he the nature thereof, having to be handled in business and industry generally, where the article handled should be protected against contamination or deterioration from direct human finger contact, and where at the same time, the finger tips should be kept clear of sticky or niussy contact with the article or contact with dyes, acids and the like carried thereby.

Another feature of the present invention is the holder modification referred to in the fore part of the immediately preceding paragraph.

Foriurther comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description Fig. 5 shows said structure partially completed as the result of making four first-performed" folds.

Referringfirst to: Figs. 1-7, the; foldings and therresulting, characteristics. of the folded sheet structure of the patent aforesaid, will preliminar-ilybehere described, to avoid unnecessary ref erence to said, patent.

Employing in this connection the same reference' charactersas. used in said patent, the folded structure -.is formed from a single blank or sheet-of paperaor any other suitable material as there explained; such sheet is so folded as to provide an upwardly directed central apex portion 2| which. is collapsible and expandable due to itsinherent resiliency, and a plurality of downwardly directed. sideapex pocket portions 22 into which onemay engage. ones fingers for pressing w the bottoms. of the side apex pocket portions 22 towards eachv other. When. the pocket portions 22 .arereleased, the central apex portion 2| will expand back to. itsv initial position due to the resiliency of the folds of. thepaper from which it ismade.

The folded. structure 20 is formed from a square blank 25.illustrated in a completely developed position in Fig.4. ,The four corners 26, 21, 28 and 29 of the blank are first bent inwards along theylines ab,.bc, cd and da, respectively, so that the. sheet now looks as illustrated in Fig. 5. From this condition of the sheet, thenew corners 30, 3I,, 32. and. 33 are bent beneath along the lines e jg, gh and he, respectively. The folded blank now appears as. illustrated in Fig. 6. When the blank. is then turned up side down, the bottom side is now at the top and appears as illustrated in Fig.7.

With the folded sheet in the condition shown in Fig. 7,. the four inner corners indicated in Fig. 6 by the reference numerals 3.5,. 36, 31 and 38.ar.e opened-and the central portion of the sheet is forced upwards and bent along the diagonal lines-39 and Allv producing a folded sheet structure. which,, by insertionv of ones fingers into. the: side pockets 22,. may be expanded as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Referring first to amodified form of folded sheet structure made from the sheet pur-.

suant to the present invention, this, as shown in Fig. 8, involves the folding in of each of the triangular flaps M, 42, 43 and 44 along lines somewhat outwardly offset from the lines e1, jg, gh and he of Fig. 5, thereby to provide four slender, elongate and diagonally extending openings 45,46,41 and 48.

These openings are provided for the protrusion there through of rib-like formations on thezspecfazl additionx49, whichformatibns', marked fiflg will below be called the ribs.

The outer ends of the ribs provide four tongs 51, which tongs, like the ribs of which they formtapart, are. V-shaped in cross-section, and therefore are able to be pointed as shown, yet retainagreat'strength against bending, even when the addition 49 is. made of fairly light-weight material, provided that material is somewhat stiffer" than ordinary paper. Such material may well be a plastic, a so-called fibre, or any fairly stiffand. relatively inexpensive composition material.

Another advantageous feature of the invention is that said ribs and. consequently said tongs are allintegr-al parts of a single structure, the additionllliwhichit wil1.be..noted,.is generally cruciforminoutline- This, integrity of all the ribs andttongs. with theremainder. of the addition 49,. adds strengthto. all. the parts, and affords thev further advantagethat in adding, the tongs to the folded. sheet structure, merely the single additionAS ,is added,v thereby saving time and labor..

Beyond the root portions of the. tongs. 51, the ribs, 50 are connected by webs 52' and become adjacent with each other at a central square opening 53 in the addition 49.

The. arrangement is such that when the addition 49 is folded in one. direction along the line 5450f Fig. 10, and along the other. three lines corresponding to. the line 54, and then folded in the oppositedirection along the lines and 5B," and along the other eight lines corresponding thereto. and at the same time folded in the direction last-mentioned along the short diagonal line" 51, andalong the other three lines corresponding thereto, the addition Q9 is completed. All thesefoldings canbe done at a single operation, by use of suitable male and-female dies, as will be' understood.

On the completion of said foldings, the crests of the'ribs' fill-are marked by the lines 54 and the lines corresponding thereto, the bases of said ribs aremarked by the. lines 55 and 56 and the lines corresponding; .thereto, and the webs 52 areintheplaneof the bottoms of the ribs. The underisides' of. said iwebs offer fairly large areas fonready' adhesive attachment of the addition s'tQi'the",foldfidtsheet structure when said additionais arranged inrelation thereto as shown in Fig. :9;

When, thereafter, thetriangular flaps M, 42, 43 and. Mtare. folded. back to the positions shown in Fig-8,thatis, to overlap and pocket the webs 52, theidevice willbe as seenin Fig. 12..

On now invertingthedevice, and. very slightly squeezing the. same. toward collapse in response to thevariousfoldlines set upin the. folded sheet structure, the device. becomes automatically disposed substantially' as shown in Fig. 13; that is, theaside pockets-22 are automatically partially opened, making itvery easy to expand said pocketsas shown in Fig. 14..

Thisautomaticpartial opening of the pockets 2 2 is an importantfeature. of the. invention, and

in part is a result of the action of the fairly stiff webs 52 in applying a fiatwise pressure to the inner surfaces of the four Walls of the central apex portion, thereby to make almost uniplanar the two triangular segments componential of each of said walls.

The new advantage of said automatic partial opening of the pockets 22 is in part also a result of the merging portions of the webs 52 around the opening 53 of the addition 42 fiatwisely pressing against the inside of the top of said central apex portion, thereby to establish such top as a substantially square and horizontal subdivision 58, which is, in effect, a truncation of said central apex portion.

This flattening out of the four Walls of the central apex portion results, in turn, in almost a flattening out of the two triangular segments componental of the outer wall of each of the side pockets 22.

There is, therefore, no need to repeatedly pick at the upper tips of the outer walls of th side pockets 22 for opening up said pockets.

Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 15,

the special addition as a whole is marked 59,

and here again, an addition is provided which is substantially cruciform outline, having a square central opening 50 (Fig. 16) which becomes reduced in size in plan as at 58 in Fig. 15 when the auxiliary blank for the addition 59 is folded along the lines El, 62 and 63 and along the lines corresponding thereto in the same manner as described above in connection with the addition #9, thereby to establish four ribs as of V-shapcd cross-section terminating at their free ends in tongs 65. Here, however, instead of the eight webs 52, four substantially triangular wings 65 are provided.

With this addition 59 used in connection with the folded sheet structure in the same manner as described above in relation to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 9-14, after said addition 59 is adhesively secured to said sheet structure by way of the wings 66 when said sheet structure is in the condition shown in Fig. 15the same condition of the sheet structure as described above in regard to the addition 49 (note the flaps [-4 3 in Fig. 15) a tongs-carrying holder according to the invention is provided having all the advantages mentioned in regard to the device of Figs. 13 and 14.

Referring to the modification shown in Figs. 17-20 the special addition, as a whole marked 6?, is too, as shown in Fig. 17, of generally cruciform outline. The four ribs E33, providing at their free ends the tongs 69 are V-shaped in crosssection and joined by webs 15 similar to the webs 52. These parts are provided by foldings like those described in connection with the blank of Fig. 10, such foldings running toward a central square opening H, so that, as indicated at H in Fig. 18, said opening becomes diminished in size in plan. The webs 10 may be bent over or sealed together to form finger grip support without the use of the folding over sheet.

Said opening is further reshaped in plan, as also indicated in Fig. 18, due to a gradual widening and flattening of the root portions of the ribs 68, where tongues are struck from such rib portions to provide four downwardly extended tabs 12.

With this addition 6? used in connectionwith the folded sheet structure (note here again the flaps ll-44) in the same manner as described in relation to the already explained embodiments,

a tongs-carrying holder according to-the invention is provided having all the advantages mentioned in regard to the device of Figs. 9-14, and furthermore, as shown in Fig. 26, not only to obtain a flattened top central formation 14 corresponding to the formation 58, but also to provide outwardly bulging formations T5 at points on the four walls of the central apex portion of the device.

These formations F5 are established by the tabs '62 because with the device arranged as in Fig. 20, the addition 61 has been inverted relative to the showing thereof in Figs. 17 and 18; that is, to have the crests of the ribs 68 lowermost so that the downwardly directed tabs 12 of Figs. 18 and 19 are now directed upwardly outwardly against the inner sides of the four walls of the central apex portion, and so as to locate said bulges somewhat below the formation 14.

As a consequence, the side pockets 22 become specially shaped stalls within which the fingers of ones hand may be particularly securely positioned.

Referring to the variation shown in Figs. 21-26, the special addition it is here also substantially cruciform in outline, and is in most respects identical with the addition 61; indeed is entirely so, except that the four tabs corresponding to the tabs 12, the one of which shown is marked 11, are substantially perpendicularly offset from the associated ribs, the one shown of said ribs being marked l8.

Each of the tabs TI and the other three like tabs, when the addition 16 is used in connection with the folded sheet structure (note, once more, and in Figs. 24 and 25, the flaps M-M) as described in relation to'the already explained embodiments, are for insertion through the four slits i9 preparatorily out in the paper blank or sheet 25, so that when the folded sheet structure has been refolded (as in Fig. 12) to enclose the addition 15, and the device has been inverted, and very slightly squeezed toward collapse in response to the various fold lines set up in the folded sheet structure, the device becomes automatically disposed as in Fig. 26.

Then in this case also, a top central formation 82 corresponding to the formation 54 will be present, but instead of the bulges 15, the tabs 11 project upwardly and outwardly through the slits E9 to constitute positive seizure members for coacting with fingers inserted in the side pockets 22. The slits '59 may also be entirely eliminated if desired.

While the advantage has been mentioned that in all the shown forms of the invention, due to the fact that a single addition is used having integral therewith all the artificial fingers or tongs, adhesive coupling of such tongs with the folded sheet structure is made exceedingly simple and inexpensive, it should be pointed out that due to the integrity of said tongs with the addition and wing elements carried thereby adjacent to the tong-carrying ribs, the tongs may be relied on to remain always properly in place on the device merely as the result of the folding back of the flaps H i4 to enclose such wing elements as indicated in Fig. 12. Moreover, in the case of the variation of Figs. 21-26, particularly, there is an actual mechanical interlock between the folded sheet structure and the addition, due to the passage of the tabs ll through the slits 19.

In all the illustrated forms of the invention, the tong tips have been shown as pointed. As will be understood, they can be given any desired shape so; as, for; instance, to be; hooked, spatulate, bifurcated, comb-like with three or more teeth, rounded, etc dependent: on the type of article to be handled.

While Lhave illustrated and described the preferred embodimentsv of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise: constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications comingwithinthe scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United StatesLetters Patent is:

1'. A sanitary holder. for picking up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a, plurality of downwardly di=- rected side apexportions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, there being' an addition offoldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet.

2. A sanitary holder for picking up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardly directed central apex. portion and aplurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side portions toward each other, tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottoms portions of, said side apex'portions, here being an addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition.

3'. A sanitary holder for. picking up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may on gage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, there being an addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition, said ribestablishing foldings being so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of the length of each, as formations V- shaped in cross-section.

4. A sanitary holder for picking up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, there bein an addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition, said ribestablishing foldingsbeing so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of thei'lengt'h of each, as formations V-shaped in cross-section, said addition being" ticles comprising a sheet of folded paper or likematerial having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, therebeing an addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition, said ribestablishing foldings being so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of the length of each, as formations ii-shaped in cross-section, said addition being formed from a blank substantially cruciform in outline and having a central opening outwardly from which. said ribs radiate.

5. A sanitary holder for picking up small air-- ticles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom. portions of said side apex portions, there being addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, L .d tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition, said ribestablishing foldings being so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of the length of each, as formations V- shaped in cross-section, said addition being formed from a blank substantially cruciform in outline and having a central opening outwardly from which said ribs radiate, said addition also including webs arranged interveningly of. said ribs.

7. A sanitary holder for picking up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardl directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly di* rected side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, there being an addition of foldable sheet material integrall carrying all said tongs, said addition. interfitted with certain of the folded portions; of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established b foldings of saidad' dition, said rib-establishing foldings being so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of the length of each, as formations \I-shapedv in cross-section, said; addition being formed from a blank substantially cruciform in outline and having a central open-- ing outwardly from which said ribs radiate, said addition also including webs arranged interven-- ingly of said ribs, one such web between each pair of adjoining ribs.

8. A sanitary holder for picking, up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like.

material having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, there being an addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition, said ribestablishing foldings being so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of the length of each, as formations V-shaped in cross-section, said addition being formed from a blank substantially cruciform in outline and having a central opening outwardly from which said ribs radiate, said addition also including webs arranged interveningly of said ribs, one such web at each of the opposite sides of the basal limits of each rib.

9. A sanitary holder for picking up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, there being an addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition, said rib-establishing foldings being so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of the length of each, as formations V-shaped in cross-section, said addition being formed from a blank substantially cruciform in outline and having a central opening outwardly from which said ribs radiate, said addition also including webs arranged interveningly of said ribs, the foldings for establishing said ribs being so extended toward said opening that when said addition is interfitted with said sheet and the parts are arranged to establish the holder, said central apex portion has imparted thereto by said addition, a substantially flat and horizontal truncation.

10. A sanitary holder for picking up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, there being an addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition, said rib-establishing foldings being so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of the length of each, as formations V-shaped in cross-section, said addition being formed from a blank substantially cruciform in outline and having a central opening outwardly from which said ribs radiate, said addition also including webs arranged interveningly of said ribs, said ribs near said opening having portions locally projected in directions to establish outward bulges near the upper ends of the side walls of said central apex portion.

11. A sanitary holder for picking up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, there being an addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition, said ribestablishing foldings being so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of the length of each, as formations V- shaped in cross-section, said addition being formed from a blank substantially cruciform in outline and having a central opening outwardly from which said ribs radiate, said addition also including webs arranged interveningly of said ribs, the folds of said sheet including four folds for providing three finally folded flaps, each substantially triangular in outline for substantially covering one side of a folded sheet structure which is flat and square, said flaps being folded along lines so relatively placed that between each two adjoining flaps, there is an elongate space extending diagonally of such square, said spaces for protrusion therethrough of said ribs when said webs are covered by said flaps.

A sanitary holder for picking up small articles comprising a sheet of folded paper or like material having an upwardly directed central apex portion and a plurality of downwardly directed side apex portions into which one may engage ones fingers for pressing the side apex portions toward each other, and tongs carried by said folded sheet and projecting from the bottom portions of said side apex portions, there being an addition of foldable sheet material integrally carrying all said tongs, said addition interfitted with certain of the folded portions of said sheet, said tongs being carried at the outer ends of ribs established by foldings of said addition, said rib establishing foldings being so aligned as to establish said ribs and tongues, over at least a major portion of the length of each, as formations V- shaped in cross-section, said addition being formed from a blank substantially cruciform in outline and having a central opening outwardly from which said ribs radiate, said addition also including webs arranged interveningly of said ribs, said ribs near said opening having portions locally projected in directions to establish outward bulges near the upper ends of the side walls of said central apex portion, said locally projected rib portions being struck-out tongues, and said sheet having slits so placed that when said addition is added to the folded sheet, said tongues pass through said slits, said tongues being so directed and so passed through said slits, that said tongues extend through the walls of said central apex portion into said side apex portions for seizure coaction with ones fingers engaged with said side apex portions.
