C. M. MARTIN.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
No. 246,895. Patented Sept. 13,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
CHARLES M. MARTIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGN OR TO THE WASHINGTON FIRE EXTINGUISHER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF WASHINGTON,
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NAO. 246,895, dated September 13, 1881. Appncanon filed February 19, '1881. (No moda.)
To all whom t m ay concern Be it known that I, CHARLES M. MARTIN, of the city and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers;
and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section ot' the extin- Io guisher. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line :v m of Fig. l.l
My invention relates to that class of tire-eX- tinguishers known in the trade as stationary tanks, and it has for its object the facilitating of the mixing of the chemicals and the charging of the machine.
My invention consists of a tank provided with a small dome, combined with a swinging bucket suspended by chains passingto a crankzo shaft crossing the said dome, and having a chain from its bottom to the side of the tank, all of which Will be hereinafter more specitlcally described and claimed.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said'drawings, A is the tank, B the dome, and C the plug which closes the charg- 3o ing-opening. Across the dome passes a crankshaft,D, wound with two small chains, a, having their` ends attached to trunnions b of a conical vessel, E, the upper edge of which has a ange, i t', ot' a slightly-larger diameter than dome B. From the bottom or tip of the conical vessel E a chain, N, passes to some point, P, Where it is secured to the inside of the tank. H is an opening for charging the body ot' the tank.
In charging the machine the dry chemicals 4o are put in the vessel E by removing the plug C, any proper stop holding the crank-shaft D in position after the bucket or conical vessel E is dra-wn up until flange t' rests against the top ot' the tank and around the mouth of the 45 dome.
When it is desired to mix the chemicals the crank-shaft D is turned so as to allow the chains to run out, the vessel E descends, and, as chain N resists the movement ot' the bottom 5o ot' the vessel, it tips over and empties the chemicals into the body ofthe tank.
The construction described will be found to be highly advantageous in tanks for village engines, as, when ange i is drawn tightly up against the top ofthe tank, none ol' the liquid in the body of the tank can be splashed into the dry chemicals by the motion or jolting of the engine.
Having thus described my invention, what 6o I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Tank A and dome B, in combination with suspended vessel E, crank-shaft D, chains c a and N, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
