4 Claims.
This invention relates to a paste applying machine and more particularly to a machine for applying paste to wall paper.
An object of this invention is to provide a paste applying machine especially adapted to applying paste to a roll of wall paper as the paper is continuously fed through a series of rollers.
Another object of this invention is to provide a removable reservoir on a paste app-lying machine of this type.
Still another object of this invention is to provide wipers for the rollers which apply the paste to the paper, whereby a, smooth and uniform coat of paste will be applied to one sid of the papers.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a machine for applying paste to wall paper having adjustable paper guides so that rolls of various width paper may be used efficiently with this machine.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a machine of this type which may be produced at a low cost and which may be efficiently maintained with little cost and labor.

Referring to the drawings the numeral designates generally a frame for this device which consistsof a bottom 2|, a pair of side walls 22, and a rear end wall 23.
A tank or paste reservoir 24 is mounted on the frame 20 by a wire support .25 fixed to and between the side walls 22. A fiat metal angle 30 secures the support 25 to the bottom 2|. The tank 24 is formed along its bottom side with a downwardly extending open tubular member 26. The tube 26 may also be adapted to serv as the filler neck for the tank 24 before the tank is placed in the support 25. The tubular member 26 is adapted to extend into a rearwardly extending channel 2'? of the paste trough 28. The paste from the tank 24 flows into the channel 21 and will be replenished as required by the paste in the tank .2 5. The trough 23 is supported within the frame by a pair of wire supports 29, which are fixed to the bottom 2! by suitable fastening means 3|.
The roll of wall paper 32 is supported above the end wall 23 by a pair of vertical channels 33 fixed to the end of the frame 20, and a rod 34 extending between the channels 33. Th rod 3% is pivotally secured to one channel 33 by a pin 35, and engages in an L-shaped slot 36 in the other channel 33. A pair of annular discs 31, adjustable lengthwise of the rod 35 hold the roll of paper 32 from sliding on the rod 34. One disc 37 is loosely mounted on the rod 34 and is kept from sliding in one direction by a sleeve 38 fixed to the rod 3d by a set screw 39. The other disc 31 is formed with a radial slot Ml engageable about the rod 34 and is adjustably fastened to a rod 4|, fixed to the end wall 23, by a sleeve 42 slidable along the rod 4i, and a set screw 43.
A paper guide plate at is pivotally mounted to the side walls 22 by a pivot at 5 and supported in its normal position by a pair of stop blocks 26 fastened Within the frame 20 to the sid Walls 22. The plate 44 may be pivoted upwardly for access within the frame 20 for cleaning or other purposes. A pair of oppositely disposed laterally adjustable fiat angular papers guides 41 are fastened to the plate 46 by a rod 48, fixed to the guide ill, slidable in a sleeve 49, fixed to the plate 44, and is fixed in the sleeve 49 by a set screw 50.
A paste applying roller 5| is mounted within the trough 28 by split bearings 52 which are fixed to the side walls 22. The roller 5! is immersed in the paste in the trough 28 and is adapted to transfer paste onto the paper 32. A pair of short wipers 53 are pivoted from the plate 44 at each side and are adapted to wipe the paste from the ends of the roller 5| so the paste will not come up over the edges of the paper. The wipers 53 are slidably adjustable along a rod 54 by a sleeve 55 and a set screw 56. The rod 54 is fixed to the plate 4:3. The wiper 53 is held against the roller by a spring 56 fixed between the arm 51 and the plate 44.
A pair of rollers 58 and 59 are mounted on a pivoted section or lever arm 60 of the side walls 22 by bearings 5i and necessary shims as at 62. The sections or levers 69 are pivotally mounted on the side walls 22 by a bar 63 fixed to the sections 60 and pivoted to the Wall at 64.
The pressure roller 58 is adapted to press the 3 paper 32 against the roller 5!, and the roller 59 is a guide for the paper 32 after it has passed between the rollers 5| and 58 and has been coated with paste.
The roller 58 is formed with narrow annular ribs 65 which press the paper against the roller 5| so that an excess of paste is not applied to the paper. The ribs 65 are made of rubber or other suitable cushioning material.
The guide roller 59 is formed with wider annular ribs 66 also made of rubber or suitable material.
Roller tensioning means are provided for ex-.
erting a Spring tension between the rollers 5| and 58 and also for holding the pivoted section or levers 60 in place. This tensioning means consists of a hook 57 and eye 68 fixed to the walls 22 and a spring 69 engageable between the hook 6'! and the bar 63 fixed to the pivoted section 59. The walls 22 are formed on their upper edge with a concave recess to provide clearance for and a stop for the pivoted section 60.
A wiper H is pivotally secured to the sides of the trough 28 and is adapted to engage the lower side of the stretch of paper 32 having paste. The wiper H is supported by an arm 72 and is constantly urged into contact with the paper 32 by a spring 13. The wiper ii is formed with a notched wiping edge 14, so that the paste on the paper is applied smoothly and uniformly throughout its length and width.
In the use and operation of this paste applying machine, a roll of paper upon which the glue is to be applied is slid on the rod 35 and the rod 34 is then moved back into horizontal position as shown in the drawings, where it is locked in the opening 35. The levers 6i), bearing the rollers 58 and 59, are pivoted to their open position and the paper is trained between the guides M and underneath the rollers 58 and 49. The arms 50 are pivoted back to their operative position where they are locked by the spring-pressed hook 51 engaging in the eye 68, The guide members 41 are adjusted longitudinally of the frame on the plate 44 to hold the paper from lateral move-- ment on the machine. The disks 31 are moved along the length of the rod 3 1 for abutting the ends of the roll of paper and are locked in place. The disks 3'! hold the roll of paper against lateral movement on the shaft 34.
A receptacle 2 1 containing paste, is inverted in the support so that the neck 25 of the reservoir will engage in the channel 21 for supplying glue into the trough 28. The spring 69 yieldingly urges the roller 58 into engagement with the glue applying roller. The ribs 55 on the roller 58 are provided for pressing the paper between the roller 58 andthe glue applying roller at spaced intervals along the length of the rollers so that an excess of glue is not applied to the paper, inasmuch as the pressure is applied only at spaced sections along the width of the paper.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device for applying paste to a roll of paper, a hinged paper roll support, adjustable means carried by said support for positioning the .paper roll, an adjustable guide for the paper for- Wardly of said paper roll support, a paste channel, a
roller partially immersed in paste in said channel and adapted to apply paste to the paper, a pressure roller for pressing the paper against said first roller, resilient annular ribs on said pres- 4 sure roller, a guide roller parallel with and spaced from said pressure roller, resilient annular ribs on said guide roller, tensioned means for ur ing said pressure roller toward said first roller, djustable spring pressed wipers engaging the e ds of said first roller for removing excess paste fr m the latter, a spring pressed notched wiper engageable with a stretch of paper disposed between said pressure and guide rollers for smoothing the paste, on the paper, a removable paste reservoir, means supporting said reservoir, and a channel connecting said reservoir with said paste channel.
2. A device for applying paste to a strip of paper, comprising a frame, hinged means for holding the strip of paper in a roll at one end of said frame, means adjustable lengthwise of said first means for centering the roll on said hinged means, a pair of guides for the strip of paper forwardly of said roll, a paste trough, a paste applying roller partially immersed in paste in said trough, a pressure roller for pressing the paper against said first roller, annular ribs on said pressure roller, a guide roller parallel with and spaced from said pressure roller, annular ribs on said guide roller, tensioned means for urging said pressure roller toward said first roller, spring pressed Wipers engaging the ends of said first roller for removing excess paste from the latter, a'
sprin pressed notched wiper engageable with a stretch of paper disposed between said pressure and said guide rollers for smoothing the paste on the paper, a removable paste reservoir, means supporting said reservoir, and a channel connecting said reservoir with said trough.
3. A device as set forth in claim 2 wherein said reservoir includes a downwardly extending tubular outlet extending into said channel for maintaining a predetermined level or paste in said channel and said trough.
l. A device for applying paste to a strip of paper, comprising a frame, a hinged support for holding the strip of paper in a roll at one end of said frame, discs carried bysaid frame and said support for centering the roll on said support, a paste trough, a paste applying roller partially immersed in paste in said trough, a pressure roller for pressing the paper against said first roller, resilient ribs on said pressur roller, pivoted lever arms supporting said pressure roller, tensioned means for urging said pressure roller toward said first roller, wipers engaging said ends of said first roller for removing excess paste from the latter, means for adjusting said Wipers lengthwise of said first roller, a notched wiper engageable with a stretch of paper disposed behind said pressure roller for smoothing the paste on the paper.
