WILLIAM S. ROBERTS, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
SUCKER-ROD WRENCH' AND ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 246,342, dated August 30, 1881. Application filed June 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BoBER'rs, of Bradford, McKean county, Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sucker-Rod Wrenches and Elevators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters or figures'of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to devices for handling oil-well sucker-rods when putting them in or removing them from the well, which devices are known as sucker-rod wrenches and elevators.
The tool consists of a wrench-head with trunnions or pintles on two of its sides, opposite each other, the line of which is transverse the wrench opening or slot, to which pintles is pivoted a forked handle, having at its eX- tremity a swivel. hen the forked handle lies horizontal with thewrench-head it can serve as the handle or lever of the wrench, and when turned in a vertical position it can serve as a bail by which to lift the sucker-rod.
My invention consists in pro 'iding upon the wrench-head a. latch which, when the handle is used as a hail, will sufficiently close the slot to prevent the rod slipping out, and which, when the device is used as a wrench, will fall back and leave free access for the shank of the sucker-d in the slot of thewrench-head.
My device is shown in the accompanying drawings, as follows: Figure 1 shows the device in position to he used as a wrench. Fig. 2 shows it in position to be used to draw up the suckerrods or lower them. Fig. 3 shows an analogous construction.
The letters of reference indicate parts, as follows:
A is the handle; B, the wrenchhead; B, the opening or slot in the wrench-head; Z), the latch; to, the eccentric or cam on the handle for movingthe latch; S, the spring which keeps the latch back when not pushed forward by the cam.
It is not new to provide means upon such a device as is here under consideration for holding the sucker rod in place when the deviceis used as an elevator. This has been done by placing a finger on the handle A, which, when the handle is in a vertical position, will lie in front of the sucker-rod and prevent itslipping outof the slot B. This finger is liable to break off in usage.
My invention consists in providing a latch upon the head B which will be thrown outinto the opening B and prevent the rod slipping out when the handle is in a vertical position. In Figs. 1 and 2 this latch is shown asa flat pivoted tongue lying in a recess, and projecting to one side far enough to be acted upon by the cam a on the handle when it is turned up.
The operation of this device is fully shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The spring S may be used or not, as desired. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the latch consists of aspring-bolt, b, which is operated upon by a earn, a. I consider these two forms as entirely analogous. Other analogous forms might be shown-such as a plate pivoted on the face of the head B, for instance; but I believe I have shown enough to fully illustrate my invention.
What I claim as new is 1. The combination, within a sucker rod wrench and elevator, ofa latch upon the wrench head, which is operated toforin an obstruction in the opening B when the handleA is turned up, substantially as and for the forth.
2. In a sucker-rod wrench and elevator, the combination of-the handle A, wrench-head B, latch 11, and cam a, substantially as set forth.
In testimony tha-tIclaim the foregoingI have hereunto set my hand this th day of May, 1881.
purposes set W. S. ROBERTS.
