Be ii; known that; we, SAMUEL H. HAAS an l GEORGE BEISNER, oi Chicago, Gool connty, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful 'lhill-Lug, of which the following is a specifieation.

Ourimention relates t0 thill-lugs for harness, in which a spring-aotuated tongue is employed ior elosing the Ing und f0r confining the thill after the tl1ill is dropped to place in the lag, and which is provided with further means for attachment: t0 the harness.

The objects of our invention are,firsb, t0 provide against the detachment 0f the tongue when in an operative position by a horizontal pressure against its end; second, t0 have the tongue swing clear 0f the throat of the lag, 150 provide an nnobsizructed aecess f0r the thill; am], finally, t0 enable the 1ug t0 be attached 21I1(1 detached and also adj ustecl t0 the suspending-strap, but securely locked t0 said strap when onee adjusted. We attain tl1ese objects by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a thill-lug embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section taken through the center of Width of the same, and Fig. 3 a side elevation 0f a modification of the Same. i

'll1e back of tl1is shank, between the slots a a, is grooved ab b the Width of the tongue, and 011 an incline t0 the slot a, to enable the tongne to swing back wardly substantially clear of the inner face of the shank, so that the thill may be dropped in almost a vertieal line int0 the throa of the hook, the l1ook extending suffieiently below to enable the thill to clear the end 0i' the tongue, and the tongueto automatically spring through the sl0t a and engage with the hook.

Als the upper end 0f the shank,and between ears d d, is pivoted a cam-lever, D, between which and tl1elug is passed the harness-strap E, from whicl1 the tllill-lug is suspended, the free end 0f thestrap passing outwardl y through the slot a and lying flat against the back of the lug.

Underneath the cam-lever, anal in the shank 0f the lug, is secured a stud 01 pin, e, passing through one of a series 0f perforations in the strap, and entering a eorrespondingdepression 01 perforation in the cam-lever when the latter is depressed, as shown in Fig. 2, to pineh 01 clamp the strap t0 the Ing.

Oam-lever D is prevented from accidental detachment fron1 the strap by a stud 01 pin,f, up0n the butt 0f the tongue, which piu is released from the lever by swinging the tongue downwarclly and out; 0 f its operative position for closing the lug.

'Il1e series 0f perforations in the suspendingstrap enables the vertieal adjustn1ent: 0f the lag, and the pin e insures against any slipping of the strap between the lag and cam-lever, and is an auxiliary to the latter both in holding and locking the strap 110 the Ing.

It will be observed that when in the position sl1own in Fig. 2, the book 0 upon the end of the t0ngue extends sufficiently above the top Wall 0f a to prevent a pressure exerted in a horizontal line aga-inst said hook from swinging the tongue downwardly and detaching il; fron1 the hook 0f the lag, as would be the case if the end of the tongue were straigh. As shown, the shape 0f the l1ook is sufiicient t0 illustrate 0ur invention, bub in praetice it may hook end of the Ing, and is swung backwardly for detachment f0r insertiug the tl1ill, as indicated in dotted lines, the sl0t in the shank 0f the Ing being sufliciently long t0 enable the tongue t0 swing through an 1 substantially clear tl1e inner face 0f the shank 0f the end of the tongue, so that the thill may be dropped, as before described. In this construction a curved spring secured near th6 base of the shank is the 1neaus f0r automatieally actuating the tongue to close the Ing.

Having thus described 0ur invention, what We claim, and desire t0 secure by Letters Putent, is-

l. T110 combination, in n. thill-lug provided at its h0ok with a slot, of a spring-actuated tongue having a hook upon its free end und adapted to pass through said slot and engage with the outer face 0f the thill-lug, substantially as and f0r the purpose described.

2. The combination, in a thill-lug slotted in 1'ts shank, 0f a spring-actsnated tongue pivotwd upon said slmnk and adapted t0 swing through said slot to dem the lug for the vertical insertion 0f the thill, as seb fortl1.

3. The combinabion with a thilllug 0f pivoted cum-lever adapted to pinch the suspending-strap t0 the lug snbstantially as and for the purpose described.

4. The combiuation, with a thill-lug und with the pivoted cam-lever, ot' a stud, c, passing through a perforation in the suspending-strap am] engagiug with said cmn-lever, substantially as described and shown.

5. 'lhe combination, with the thill-lug, be piv0ted cam-lever, and the tongue, 0t' the stud upon said tongue adapted t0 engnge with and 100k the eam-lever, substantially as und f0r the purpose described.
