Description

BED SHEET CONS TRUCTION Filed D90. 9, 1947 INVENTOR BFPTHA BEEN/A N ig admit ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 22, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BED suns-r CONSTRUCTION Bertha Berm an, New York, N. Y. Application December 9, 1947, Serial No. 790,559

This invention relates to removable covers for mattresses, cushions and the like, and morepar- I ticularly is directed to an improved bed sheet construction. v

Among the objects of the invention is to provide an improved cover of the character described which ,shall be simple in construction, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture yet durable, which shall be easy and convenient to in the construction hereinafter disclosed, thescope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims following.

In the accompanying drawing in which one embodiment of the invention is shown,

Fig. 1 is a top plan view of theimproved bed sheet construction embodying the invention fitted in effective position on mattress of conventional manufacture, partly broken away to expose the top horizontal side of the mattress.

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the bed sheet shown in Fig. 1 unfolded in outstretched condition.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one corner of the mattress, showing the position of the improved bed sheet during the fitting there of, and

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view similar 9 to Fig. 3 showing the improved bed sheet completely fitted in position.

Referring in detail to the drawing, l denotes a removable cover of improved construction embodying the invention in the form of a bed sheet which is adapted to snugly fit over the horizontal top, vertical sides, and ends of a mattress M of any well understood manufacture.

Bed sheet In may be made of cotton, linen or other suitable sheeting material-that is limp adapted to be; readily dry cleaned or laundered and as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a rectangular center sheet area i I extending over said mattress topside, that is, as shown in Fig. 2, over the area between transversely extending 4 Claims. (CI. 5 335) fold lines Ila, which are seen to terminate at the opposite rim edges 06 cover ill andlongitudinally "extending fold lines lib, which are seen to terminate on fold lines a. Said fold lines Na in the drawing indicate the division between center sheet area II and spaced apart transversely extending marginal end areas is but normally do not form creases. The latter, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, may be of sufilcient dimensions to cover said vertical ends of the mattress M. Longitudinally extending fold lines lib in the drawing indicate the division between the center sheet area I l and spaced apart longitudinally extending marginal side areas i2, the latter being of sufiicient dimensions to cover the vertical sides of the mattress M.

Each marginal end area i3 may terminate in spaced corner forming portions or flaps 13a, of substantially square contour having dimensions corresponding to the thickness of mattress M, and inwardly of each ofvsaid corner flaps Be there is provided a cut awayportion or recess 13b terminating short of fold line H as shown in Fig. 3 which forms a fold fitting means in the region bordering recess i3b for cover it as is'hereinafter described.

The rim border edge of the cover ii) may be finished to make it non-ravelling by providing selvages or sewn or heat sealed'hems of any well known construction.

In Figs. 2, 3 and 4 rim edges Illa border along said marginal side area l2 and on' flap |3q are shown finished with a selvage, while rim edges i0b bordering'on marginal end area l3, on recesses I31: and on flaps i3a, are shown to be hemmed by sewing or heat sealing. Y

Suitable readily releasable fastener means, such as zippers, hooks and eyes or the like may be provided by securing to the underside of .fiaps l3a one of the complementary or mating' elements thereof along hem Hlb from the rim edge I30 and as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 spaced apart male elements Ila of snap fasteners I are there used. Female snap fastener elements Mb are provided to extend in a transverse direc-' tion with respect to male elements Ma and spaced therefrom as shown in Fig. 2.

of a sheet as describediabove to the dimensions of mattress M as shown in the drawing, the practical utility is apparent.

The sheet III is centered on the top horizontal side of the mattress. The opposite side marginal areas I! are down folded on fold lines MD to cover the vertical sides of the mattress M as shown in Fig. 3. The opposite end marginal areas it are next down folded on fold lines Ila and also an infold is made as indicated at l6 in Figs. 2 and 3 on said area B over each recess The improved sheet ill lends itself to launder- I ing operations particularly to ironing without unnecessary wrinkling yet permitting desirable folding as is clear from Fig. 2.

It is to be understood that while the snap fasteners are shown attached directly to the material of sheet In such fasteners may also be supplied permanently attached to suitable tapes and said tapes sewn or otherwise secured in same position as shown in the drawing.

It is also to be understood that while the corner flaps Ha are shown to overlie the recesses I3b formed in the marginal end areas i3, such recesses could, if desired, be formed in the marginal side areas i2 and the corner flaps folding along the sides. The sheet construction shown in the drawing is adapted for use on a mattress where the sides are fully exposed and a neat covering is desired.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a sheet construction whereby the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments knight be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood thatall matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I cl as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A cover construction of limp material substantially rectangular in shape when spread flat having a center area, end marginal areas, and side marginal areas adapted to cover a horizontal side, vertical ends and vertical sides, respectively, of an article so shaped when folded along lines bordering said center area, said marginal areas terminating in spaced end flaps and being formed with a rim edge polygonally shaped recess adj acent each flap extending toward one of said fold lines and terminating short of the latter to provide a marginal area portion for extending to cover the article edge when said flap is folded to overlie said recess, elements of fastening means carried along an underside of each of said end flaps and cooperating elements of said fastening means carried along an upper side of said end areas adjacent each of the recesses.

2. A sheet construction comprising a center area for covering a horizontal side of a mattress, end and side marginal areas to cover vertical ends and sides of the mattress, respectively, when folded along lines bordering said center area, an end flap terminating one of said side marginal areas, one of said end marginal areas being formed with a rim edge polygonally shaped recess adjacent said flap extending towards one of said fold lines and terminating short of the latter to provide a marginal area portion for extending to cover the mattress edge when said flap is folded to overlie said recess, and fastening means carried along a rim edge of said flap on one side of said sheet and along a rim edge of said recess on the other side of said sheet for releasably securing said flap in said folded position to form a fitted corner.

3. A sheet construction as defined in claim 2 in which said fastening means along, the rim edge of said flap extends in right angle relation with respect to the corresponding fastening means extending along the rim edge of the recess when said sheet is spread unfolded.

4. The sheet construction defined in claim 2 in which a permanent under-tuck is provided in the portion of the rim edge border of said recess adjacent said flap to determine a smooth upper edge fold when said end flap is folded to overlie the recessed portion.

, BERTHA HERMAN.
