2 Claims.
The invention relates to a packing collar for railway car oil boxes or the like, and more particularly to dust collars for axle boxes of railway rolling stock or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a collar of this character, wherein the packing within axle boxes of railway rolling stock can be properly held and conned, to effect a dust guard, the collar being oi novel construction and maintains the packing in working position within the box of a railway car.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a collar of this character, wherein the same elects a binder for packing placeable within a journal box of a railway car and effects a dust guard to the journal or axle as confined therein, it being constructed to withstand all weather conditions, and assures proper lubrication to the journal or axle.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a collar of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eicient in service, strong, durable, assured of long life, readily and easily applied and removed, it being devoid of fasteners of any kind, conveniently assembled, eliminates damage to a journal or axle, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the collar in an unfolded condition as constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a side view of the packing as conned by the collar;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 4 is an edge view of the collar and packing prior to the confinement of the latter;
Figure 5 is a side view of the collar with the packing therein;
Figure 6 is an edge View thereof;
Figure 7 is a sectional View taken on the line 'I-'I of Figure 5 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the collar constructed in accordance with the invention comprises, a body frame IB, which can be made from any suitable sheet material, such as metal, or the like, cut and stamped to p-rovide opposed similarly shaped cheeks or panels II and I2, respectively, having companion or registering journal or axle holes or openings i3, and are joined by a foldable connecting hinge Ill. This hinge It is located at the rounded ends I5 adjacent to each other of the cheeks I I and I2, while the opposite remaining ends I6 of such cheeks are blunt or straight, which is likewise true with respect to the opposite side edges ll of the said cheeks.
Next to the blunt or straight end edges I6 of the cheeks II and l2, and projecting normally from the cheek I I in a lateral direction are bendable ears IB which are folded over onto the cheek I2, so as to conne between both cheeks II` and I 2 a packing disk I9, which is provided with a hole 2i! coinciding with the holes I 3 in said cheeks tov retain the packing sandwiched between such cheeks when brought in close parallel relation to one another, as best seen in Figure 7 of the drawing.
Provided on the cheek Il about the side edges and rounded end thereof at opposite sides with respect to the hinge Ill are spaced bendable tongues 2l which are foldable over and onto the other cheek I2 for the clamping of the packing disk I9 between these cheeks and completing the assembly of the collar for service as a dust guard for the journal or axle of a railway car within an. axle or journal box of its equipment. The collar in its completed form is removably tted within the box, not shown.
The cheek II at its straight or blunt edge is formed with an overlap flange 22 for the packing disk I9.
What is claimed is:
l. In a journal box supporting a rotating shaft, a dust guard therefor comprising a rst and a second flat cheek parallel to and spaced from each other, said cheeks having axle openings in register with each other, a hinge integrally formed with said cheeks together at the bottom sides thereof, a packing disk between said cheeks and having an opening inregister with the axle openings, a plurality oi spaced tongue portions extending about and integrally formed with the sides and bottom of said first cheek, said tongue portions being bent over the second cheek Whereby said packing disk is retained between said cheeks, a bent iiange at the top of one of said cheeks extending toward the other of said cheeks.
2. A dust collar for railroad car axle journal boxes comprising a pail' of spaced parallel panels having registering axle receiving openings therein and formed with substantially semi-circular ends, the lower ends of said panels being connected by a hinge strip integral with both of said panels, and a packing disk positioned between said panels and having an axle receiving opening therein registering with corresponding' openings in the panels, one of said panels hav* ing straight side edges on the upper part thereof with extended tongues spaced from the upper edge and folded over the packing disk and around the other panel with the collar assembled, and the other of said panels having a plurality of spaced tongues extended from the sides thereof and a flange on the upper edge with downwardly extended ears at the ends, with the 4 tongues, flange, and ears, folded over the edge of the packing disk and with the said tongues extended around the other panel with the collar assembled.
