9 Claims. (01. 197-47) It is among the objects of my present invention to provide a toy typewriter which has all the advantages of that of my previous application Serial No. 658,318, filed March 29, 1946 and of my previous issued Patent No. 2,398,765, dated April 23, a
1946, including the use substantially solely of sheet metal and rod stock to simulate the appearance of a genuine portable typewriter and to do so by a structure that is more attractive in appearance, simpler in construction, affording greater convenience in operation and enhanced reliability in use and which has the further advantage over said prior inventions of increased visibility of the typing area of the platen. r

Referring now to the drawings, the toy typebracket 2| having a pair of upstanding arms 22, 23 at opposite ends on each side thereof. Key lever 20 is pivoted on an axle 24, the latter being journalled in arms 22 of the bracket 2|. Each of the arms 25 of the key lever 2|] is pivoted to a link 26, the upper end of said link being pivoted by means of axle 21 to the obliquely extending arms 28 of a substantially U-shaped sheet metal carriage 29. The end of each of said oblique arms 28 is pivoted to upstanding arms 23 on standard 2! as at 59.
Depending from carriage 29 is a U-shaped bracket 30, the arms of said bracket being affixed to the carriage 29 as at 3!. A type wheel .32 having at its periphery the type heads comprising the sequence of letters and numerals, is aflixed to the upper end of a substantially upright axle 35, the latter in position of rest being :at substantially right angles to platform l6 and journalled in bearing openings 33, 34 in bracket 30 and carriage 29 respectively and protruding from writer simulates the general appearance of a modern portable typewriter, presenting as it does a base H, a simulated standard keyboard 12, a housing l3 to the rear thereof of the shape and dimensions commonly used on standard typewriters to enclose the key lever basket and the ribbon mechanism, and a platen structure It to the rear of the housing.

Coasting with the ratchet wheel is a pawl lever in which is pivotally mounted at one end to bracket 3i! and which bears a pawl roller 4! near its opposite end urged by coil spring 42 into engagement between the teeth of the ratchet. In the course of the depression of thekeylever 25, bracket 45 carrying roller, 44 is pivoted" by means of'pit'man' 58 causing roller 44' mm raised, inking a few of the type heads including. the one to-be imprinted during its. upward motion, and then clearing the type. wheel and the. platen.
Depression of key lever 20 also causes link 66 to be moved toward the platen l4 by the transmission 26, 21, thereby causing cam plate 63 to turn in a clockwise direction, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3 through the transmission 61, 6B. This will cause link 64 to be pulled, thereby moving the platen forward one space.
Release of the key lever will allow the carriage to pivot to its idle position, as shown in Fig. 2, solelyby virtue: of the-weight of the carriage. Return of the carriage will also cause the bracket 45 to pivot downward to the position shown in the. type wheel.
The spacer lever 69 when depressed, will cause link'lflstoirotate the cam plate causing the escapementmechanism to function. Due to the lost motion slot 68, depression of the spacer lever will have. no: effect on carriage 29.

5. In a toy typewriter, the combination of a base, a platen structure rising from the rear thereof, a standard rising from said base and in front of said platen structure, a carriage pivoted in said standard, a type wheel having a substantially upright axle bearing in said carriage, a
ratchet wheel coaxial with and afiixed to the lower part of said axle, a pawl lever pivoted to said carriage at the outer side thereof and having a roller near its free end, a spring resiliently urging said roller against the periphery of said ratchet wheel, a rotatable dial knob aifixed to the upper end of said upright axle, a sequence of letters and numerals peripherally about said knob, and a pointer near the periphery of said knob and afiixed to said carriage.

In a typewriter of the character comprising a base having a platform, a platen structure, a type wheel having a substantially upright axle at right angles to said platform, a pivoted carriage mounting said type wheel, a bracket pivotally mounted on said carriage and straddling said type wheel, an inking roller rotatably mounted on said bracket, and means linking said bracket to said base for displacement of said roller in the forward rocking of the carriage toward the platen, thereby moving the roller across the type of the type wheel during the typing stroke and clearing the path of movement of the selected type toward the platen.
'7. In a toy typewriter, the combination of a base, a platen structure rising from the rear thereof, operating mechanism on said base, said mechanism comprising a standard rising from said base and in front of said platen structure, a carriage pivoted on said standard, means for rocking said carriage to typing position, a type wheel having a substantially upright axle bearing in said carriage, a ratchet wheel coaxial with and affixed to the lower part of said axle, a pawl lever pivoted to said carriage at the outer side thereof and having a roller near its free end, and a spring resiliently urging said roller against the periphery of said ratchet wheel, a cover plate supported by said carriage and depending therefrom and enclosing said operating mechanism, a rotatable dial knob aflixed to the upper end of said upright axle, a sequence of letters and numerals peripherally about said knob, and a pointer near the periphery of said knob and afiixed to said carriage.

In a toy typewriter, a base, a platen structure rising from the rear thereof, a standard in front of said platen, a carriage pivoted in said standard, a bracket depending from said carriage and affixed thereto, a substantially upright axle bearing in said bracket and said carriage and protruding from the latter, said axlehaving affixed thereon in coaxial relation therewith a ratchet wheel and i a type wheel between said bracket and said carriage, a dial knob aifixed to said upright axle on the protruding end thereof, a pawl lever pivoted to said bracket and having a ratchet wheel engaging roller near the free end thereof, a spring urging the roller end of said lever against the periphery of said ratchet wheel, and means for rocking said carriage to typing position.
9. The combination set forth in claim 8 in which means are provided for applying ink to said type wheel, said means comprising a bracket pivotally mounted on said carriage and straddling said type wheel, an inking roller rotatably mounted on said bracket, andmeans linking said bracket to said base for displacement of said roller in the forward rocking of the carriage toward the platen, thereby moving the roller across the type of the type wheel during the typing stroke and clearing the path of movement of the selected type toward the platen.
