UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
SULLIVAN FOREHAND, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOCK FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,620, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed March 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SULLIVAN FOREHAND, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatically Half-Cooking Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of so much of a fire-arm as is necessary to illustrate my present invention, as will be hereinafter more fully described, anti Fig. 2 represents a bottom view of certain parts shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 represents, upon an enlarged scale, a side and sectional view of certain parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of certain parts in a new and useful manner, whereby the hammer will be antomatically set at half-cock immediately after the arm has been fired, and that, too,in a manner more simple in operation than by the other modes in use prior to my said invention. In the drawings the part of the arm is shown which supports the breech of the barrel, also the lock, one side of the casing being removed to show the lock and the working of my said improvement, which is combined therewith.
In the drawings, the part marked A is the hammer, which is combined with or fastened to the outer projecting end, a, of thejournalpiece B, to which is fastened the tumbler part G, having on its front end two notches, b and 0, into which the upper end, 01, of trigger D catches. When the hammer is drawn back it is shown in catch b, and the hammer stands at half-cock and lifted off of the upper end of the firing-pin E, and this is the position the hammer will assume after each tiring. This result is obtained by means of the combination of spring h with the tumbler G, as follows:
A stirrup, f, is hooked upon the rear grooved end of the tumbler G, and also hooked upon the frontend, g, of the mainspring F. Bearing against the lower end of stirrup f is the free and rear end of the spring h, the front end being fastened by a pin, 1, in a groove, 2, in
the lower side of the tumbler O, as fully indicated in Fig. 2, which shows a bottom view of the tumbler O and spring h and stirrup f, the parts being shown detached from the other parts of the arm.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the hammer is drawn back, so that the upper end, (I, of trigger D falls into the cocking-notch c, the front end of mainspring F will be depressed, and that when the trigger is drawn back to fire the arm said mainspring flies up, thereby throwing hammer A forward upon the tiring-pin E, which is forced down against the base of the cartridge and fulminate contained therein, and explodes the same. As soon as the upper end of stirrup f strikes the stop-piece m the action of the rear end of spring h upon the resisting bottom of the stirrup f causes the front end of the tumbler O to reactand move up, thereby carrying hammer A back, so that when the finger is taken off of the trigger its front end, cl, will he forced by the end e of spring 1 into the half-cock notch b, 'as fully shown in Fig. 1, and in which position the parts will be retained until changed for the purpose of firing the arm again. Spring 1 raises the firingpin.
My said improvement is simple, not liable to get out of order, and, besides, is sure and certain in always keeping the arm at half-cock when not in use, thereby guarding against and preventing the premature discharge of thearm.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the notched tumbler O, hammer A, and stirrup f, of spring h, attached to tumbler O, as described, andbearing on the other end of the link to cause the rebound of the hammer, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
SULLIVAN FOREHAND. Witnesses:
THos. H. DODGE, EDWIN E. MOORE.
