ICE-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,445, dated August 9, 1881.
Application filed June 9, 1881.
Improvement in Absorption Ammonia Ice- Machines, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is produce certain new and useful improvements-in absorption ammonia ice-machines for the purpose of preventing steam or vapor from being mixed with the ammonia-gas which is produced in this machine, and for the purpose of avoiding an undue pressure in the ammonia-boiler.
The invention consistsin combininga smallor boiler with the main liquor ammonia-boiler, these two boilers being connected by top and bottom tubes.
In the accompanying drawing, a cross-sec- 2o tional elevation of my improved ammoniaboiler for ice-machines is shown.
The ammonia-boilerA of a Garr ice-niachine is connected with asmaller similar boiler, B, by a pipe, 0, leading from near the bottom of the boiler A to a point in or near the upper third of the boiler B, and by a pipe, D, leading from the top of the boiler B to or near the top of the boiler A. The boiler B rests on a furnace, E, and is provided with an exhaust- 0 pipe, G, extending down to within a short distance from the bottom of this boiler. The ammonia-gases escape through a pipe connected with the boiler A at H, and the strong liquor ammonia enters at J. As the two boilers are connected the level of the liquor will be the same in the two boilers.
The operation is as follows: The liquor ammonia in the boiler A is first heated slightly until ammonia-gas, which is absolutely pure 0 and devoid of any vapor or steam, is obtained;
but the liquid in the boiler B is heated much more and converted into ammonia-gas, which passes through the pipe D into the boiler A,
(No model.)
and off through the pipe connected with the collar or neck H. As the liquor ammonia in the boiler B is gradually evaporated a fresh quantity of strong liquor ammonia flows from the boiler A into the boiler-B through the pipe O, and the weakened or diluted liquor of ammonia passes off through the pipe G, and is again strengthened in the ordinary manner of the Oarr apparatus. With the above-described improvements the gas obtained is very pure, will have greater absorbing-power, and consequently a considerable quantity of fuel is saved; and as only a small part of the entire quantity of the ammonia is heated I can attain a veryhigh temperature of the ammonia being heated, and will obtain great quantities of gas, but the pressure in the apparatus will not be augmented correspondingly.
This apparatus can be used for any absorption machine independently of the gas used, which may be ammonia-gas or some other gas.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an ice-machine,the combination, with the ammonia-boiler A of an additional ammonia-boiler, B, connected therewith, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an ice-machine, the combination, with the ammonia-boilers A and B, of the connecting-pipes O and D, and ot' the furnace E, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an ice-machine, the combination, with the ammonia-boilers A and B, of the connecting-pipes G D, the furnace E, and the exhaustpipe G, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
