, Referring-to the figuresin detail there isrshow-n in Figs. 1-3, a precision honing device generally designated l0 comprising a stem or mounting member H havingadamp-like frame 12 positionedthereon. A pair of sphericalsharpening members ['3 are rotatably mounted in clamp: l2 and are positioned to bear against one another.
The stem H is a suitable and convenienthandle or mounting member adapted to fit, according'to the particular needs, into a conventionalmounting-clamp or the like or alternatively adapted to be held in an operators hand. This stemlmay be constructed of WOOd,, metal, plastic orother similar relatively stiff and sturdy structural materials. '1 The clamp on frame |2 comprises a base '14 which is secured to stem H and which has two side or: arm members l5 rising from the sides thereof and facing one another. Near-the top or 'free end of arm [5 are two-holes orrecesses Hi, one :hole in each of arm members l5. Theseholes 1 6 arepositioned directly opposite one another and are adapted to receive sphericalmembers i l.
Spherical members I3 comprise relatively hard and precision formed balls having a diameter substantially larger than the diameter of holes 516*. These spherical members I3 are positioned in holes LB and on the inner sides of arms 15 whereby members 13 bear'against one another. These members are loosely positioned in holes l6 and therefore are adapted to rotate therein.
Clamp I2 is constructed of astrong and resilient material, such as spring steel or thelike whereby-it is adapted to retain spherical members l3 firmlyyet springablyin position.
.Spherical members I3 are constructed of a hardened steel or similar hard material, and are substantially harder thanthe adjacent arm members H, as well as being substantially harder than conventional Icutting members such as razor blades and the like. These spherical members H are accurately formed to a nearlyperfect spherical shape, substantially free from irregularities and defects.
In use andoperation the device shown in Figs. 1.-3 is firmly grasped in, the operator's hand or alternatively, and preferably, is securely fastened to .a :work. bench or the like, and the instrument to be sharpened is carefully and slowly passed through: the honing-device, placing the sharp-cutting edge between spherical members H. The cutting edge is passed between spherical members l3 once or several times until the, edge is thoroughly and satisfactorily sharpened.
In Fig. 4, there is shown a somewhat different form of this invention, wherein stem II is omitted from the structure. In this form of the invention, a honing device comprising a clamp [2 having parallel placing arms IS in which are mounted spherical members l3 in a structure similar to that describe-d in Figs. 1-3. The bottom of clamp i2 is substantially flat whereby it is adapted to be positioned directly on a flat surface.
There is likewise provided an adjustable clamp l1 preferably a C clamp or the like. One arm 18 of this clamp is adapted to be positioned above the base I4 of member I2 and the other arm I9 of clamp I1 is adapted to be positioned below a work table 29 or other similar surface. Thumb screw 2| or the like serves to releasably secure the honing device to the upper surface of table 20, as shown in Fig. 4.
The use and operation of this form of the device is similar to that previously described, with the honing devic being mounted on the upper surface of a work table and a precision cutting tool being sharpened thereon as previously de scribed.
In Figs. 5 and 6, there is shown a somewhat different form of the invention wherein clamp l1, according to Fig. 4, is formed as an integral part of the honing device H). In this form of the invention the honing device comprises blank 22 of spring steel, as shown in Fig. 6, in the form of a T having two holes or recesses l6 near opposite ends of the cross bar of the T and having a small threaded hole 23 near the face or stem of the T.
The blank is opened along dotted lines, as shown in the figure, with arms l5 of the cross bar being bent upwardly at right angles and with stem 24 of the T being bent downwardly at right angles. The bottom portion 25 of the stem 24, containing hole 23 is further bent backwards at right angles whereby it is positioned directly beneath and parallel with the central or crossing portion I 4 of the T. The finished formation is shown in Fig. 5.
The thumb screw 2W or the like is passed through threaded hole 23 whereby there is formed an adjustable clamp for securing the device to a work table or the like. A pair of spherical members l3 are positioned between arms l3, restin in holes l6 therein in a structure similar to that shown in connection with the previou figures. The use and operation of this device is similar to that previously described.
' In Figs. 7-9, there is shown a still further form of this invention wherein the tension acting on spherical members [3 i adjustable. The structure is similar to that shown in the previous figures, in particular the structure shown in Figs. 1-3, with the exception that a tension adjusting means 21 is mounted between arms H: at a point substantially half Way between spherical meme hers I 3 and base I 4 of the device.
According to this form of the invention, this adjusting means 21 comprises bolt 28 having a right handed thread thereon mounted in one arm 15 and a bolt 29 having a left handed thread thereon mounted in the other arm l5" (see Fig. 9)
effective additive length of bolts 28 and 29 is increased or decreased as desired, As the length of bolts 28 and 29 is decreased arms |5 are allowed to come together whereby the full tension of the clamp 12 is caused to act on spherical members l3. As the effective length of bolts 28 and 29 is increased an accurately adjusted proportion of this tension is removed from spherical members |3.
The use and operation of this device is similar to that shown in connection with the previous figures with the exception that there is available a fine adjustment of the characteristics of the honing device. For relatively coarse work, the tension of the device is tightened whereby spherical members I3 are caused to bear relatively firmly against one another. For the final and exceptionally fine sharpening, collar 30 is adjusted to cause spherical members l3 to bear against one another only lightly whereby an extremely sharp'cutting edge may be formed on the tool which is being sharpened.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within thescope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United :States Letters Patent is:

3. In a honing device having a U-shaped frame rotatively supporting a pair of balls in contact with each other adjacent the outer free ends of the flexible arms of said frame, means for varying the spacing of said arms to vary the pressure with which the balls engage each other, comprising bolts non-rotatively mounted in axial align- 5 ment on the inner faces of said arms anddirected toward each other, said bolts having threads of opposite hand, and a tubular collar having said bolts threadedly engaged into its ends, whereby the collar may be turned in one direction to extend the bolts and spread the arms to reduce the pressure on the balls and in the opposite direction to draw the bolts together and relieve the arms to increase the pressure on the balls, said bolts having their outer ends irregularly shaped and extended into mating recesses formed in the inner faces of said arms preventing rotation of said bolts relative to said arms.
