Description
I (No Model.)
M. S. WELLER.
BORING BIT. No. 245,10 Patented Aug. 2,188 1.
UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICEQ M. SCOTT 'WELLER, OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS W. DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
' BORING-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 245,106, dated August 2, 1881.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, M. Soorr WELLER, of the county of J efierson and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful 5 Improvements in Boring-Bits; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my ifivention is to construct a boring-bit which, while it perforates the Wood, 1 5 at the same time and in doing. so, cuts and reams the perforation without splitting the wood perforated, and afl'ords an easy outlet for the chips made in boring, and by its taper produces the requisite-sized perforation for several-sized screws, if used for that purpose. My improved boring-bit, also, is more easily kept in order than those .now in use, the
grooves or cutting-edges being more accessible to the file.
My boring-bit is made in the following manner: The point is made sharp, with a spiral groove with sharp edges cut in two sides of Application filed June 17, 1881. (No model.)
the bit opposite each other, and which two sides are slightly rounded and enlarged gradually from the point to the neck of the bit, the 30 grooves extending in a spiral manner to the neck. The other two sides of said boring-bit are flat, tapering in like manner from the neck to the point, which flat sides are polished and in appearancelike an ordinary bit with the two 5 .opposite sides ground down to flat surfaces,
leaving the other two sides with the rounded surface and spiral grooves intact.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 presents the fiat side of the bit, and Fig. 2 the 40 grooved sides of the bit.
Having fully described myinvention, what I vdesireto claim and secure by Letters Patent
