Fig. 3 is an enlarged side View of the upper 305 ortion of the container, with parts broken away and shown in 'section and with the" 'op'ening de- Vice in 'one'of itspo'sitions' incidental -to' remo ving the container cover; and
Figsi 4 and 5 are enlargedJ sectional details taken substantially "along" the respective" line's 4"-'4,'5-5 in Fig. 2. 2
As a: preferred embbuimenteithe inventidn the drawings illustrate a sheet metal cylindrical can H having top and bottorncountersunk panel end tion or"portion' l6 (Fig. 2) which extends up from a. countersunk panel I! and terminates in an inwardly extending'curled'ed'ge l8 the top of which is disposed in a plane preferably flush with or slightly above the top edge of the double seam' 2 the'can. The dispensing opening I19 is sealed with areclosure cover'or cap 22. -'This reclosure cover is formed-with a= countersunk dome shaped panel 23 (Figs. 2, 4 and 5) theouterperi-pheral edgezibf which merges into an upright or upstanding annular inner friction wall section 24." This annular wall section frictionally engages against the i'nner' surface of the curled edge-t8 of the'container arid thus holds the cover in place when the cover is on 6017 wall section 4-2ex'tends substantially from theiac tuatingpad 3-1 rearwardly of the-leverandis' adapted- :to contact 'withthe top surface or the cover pry-off edge 21 "to supportthe lever and to hol'd' it in=its normal or inoperativepositionj as shown' ini Fig. 1. Near the cam en'd of the lever the lateral. wall: section 42 durves'or extends u wardl'y l and "terminates opposit'e i the locking lug 3B-in clo'se ,p'roximit'yito the outeri'surface of the dependingwallsection 260i the cover (Fig.4) 1 l 4 wall portion extending along one edge thereof for supporting the lever on the pry-off edge of said cover, said lateral wall portion terminating adjacent the outer surface of said depending outer wall of the cover, said lever adjacent its cam end having a locking lug extending beneath said cover pry-off edge and thence outwardly becover to different places. for prying the 'cover' loose. This prying action is readily effected at any desired place around the cover, by a mere lifting of the lever by its actuating pad 3], as best shown in Fig. 3.
This lifting action brings the cam edge 38 of the lever 35 into engagement against the countersunk panel I! of the top end member l2 and with this cam edge as a fulcrum the locking lug 39 engages against the bottom surface of the pryoif edge 21 of the cover and thus pries the cover loose with the continued lifting of the lever.
With such a construction of opening lever, the lever is disposed normally in an inoperative position in the space between the cover and the end seam of the can and is thus in an out-of-the way place where it is always ready for use and at the same time protected against injury. In this normal position the lever in no way interferes with stacking of the cans l I if such stacking is desired.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described bein merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
