A TTORNE Y Patented-Aug. 17, 1948 COIL AND MOUNTING THEREFOR Anthony J. Ruscito, Unadilla, N. Y., assignor to Bendix Aviation Corporation, New York, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware 6' Application September 1, 1943, Serial No. 500,780
1 Claim. (01. 171-209) This invention relates to electrical apparatus and more particularly to a coil adapted for use in ignition apparatus, such as magneto-generators, and means for mounting the same.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a novelly constructed coil which may be readily and inexpensively manufactured and is yet sturdy, durable and electrically eflicient.
Another object is to provide a novel coil for'a magneto-generator or the like which is so constructed as to facilitate electrical connections thereto.
Still another object is to provide a magnetogenerator or the like wherein the coil in .which current is magnetically induced is mounted in operative relation to the stator poles in a novel and highly eflicient manner.
A further object is to provide a novel induction coil for a magneto electric device or the like wherein the ground connection is effected in a novel way.
The above and further objects and novel features of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description when the same is read in connection with the accompanying drawings. It is to be expressly understood, however, that the drawings are for the purpose of illustration only and are not intended as a definition of the limits of the invention, referonce for this latter purpose being had primarily to the appended claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, I
Fig. 1 is a top plan view, with parts broken away, showing a portion of the casing of a magneto-generator or the like and one form of coil constructed and mounted in the casing in accordance with the present invention:
.Fig. 2 is a detail view, partly in section and with parts broken away, of the apparatus of Fig. 1, the section being taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of said coil, the
section being taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of said coil taken on line 44 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a partial plan view of said coil, partly in section and with parts broken away, the section being taken on line 55 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation view, showing an outside plate or lamination of the coil core; and
Fig. '7 is a sectional view of said plate taken on line 'I-I of Fig. 6.
The single embodiment of the invention illus- -trated in the accompanying drawings includes.
by way of example, a coil mounted in the casing of a magneto which is adapted for supplying relatively low voltage current to an internal combustion engine ignition system of the low voltage distribution type. The magneto may be of the rotating magnet or any other suitable type wellknown in the art. Since magnetos per se are so v well understood by those skilled in the art, it is believed to be unnecessary to show all of the details of the complete magneto structure. In the modern commercial form of magneto, the stator poles I0, 10 are laminated and cast into the walls of the magneto casing for cooperation with a rotating magnet or flux distributor which cooperates with a stationary, permanent magnet in a manner well understood in the art.
The novel, simplified coil contemplated by the invention comprises a novelly constructed metallic core l2, which consists of a plurality of thin laminations I3 and a pair of slightly thicker outside laminations or side plates H and I. Said laminations and plates may, in the interest of greater mechanical strength and rigidity, be secured together by a plurality of rivets ii. The latter may, however, be omitted in the present novel construction in order to obviate undesirable eddy currents within the core itself if increased electrical efficiency is important. For a purpose to more fully appear hereafter, each of the outside laminations or side plates I4 and I5 is provided adjacent the ends thereof with laterally projecting ears or fastening lugs l1, which may be integral with or otherwise suitably secured to said plates. The lower faces I8 of said lugs, as I viewed in the drawings, are preferably in a plane parallel to but slightly above the lower edges of the central portions of plates I4, I 5 and hence, above the lower face I9 of the assembled core II. For the purpose of facilitating the grounding of one end of the coil winding,,to be hereinafter described, and provide a durable and positive ground connection, side plate i4 is provided intermediate its ends with a laterally extending projection 20. This projection may be soldered, welded, riveted or secured in any other suitable manner to plate or lamination I4 in the form indicated in Fig. 7, that is, as a separate piece, or the same may be stamped or pressed out of the plate itself and, hence, be integral therewith.
Surrounding core l2 and serving as means either with or without rivets l6 for holding the laminations l3, l4, [5 of core I2 in assembled relation is a unitary spool 2| of molded insulating material. Said spool is preferably molded onto the coil core so that these two parts are, in eifect, a unitary'structure. Said spool consists of end flanges 22, 23 and a central portion 24 completely surrounding the central portion of core I! and preferably having a continuously curved periphery or circumferential surface, which facilitates installation of the coil winding thereon without necessitating any sharp bending of the wire and without leaving any substantial air spaces. Ears or lugs iii are outside the end flanges of spool 2i,-whereas projection is preferably embedded in flange 32 (Fig. 1) and a hollow metallic rivet 25 extends through said flange and projection in good electrical contact with the latter. The outer face of projection 22 is preferably flush with the outer face of flange 22, as shown in Fig. 1. Said projection, however, need not be embedded in the flange but may be secured to or integral with any part of lamination it which extends beyond said flange, such as the lug ill, for example.
The upper central portion of flange 23 is preferably provided with an external boss 26 in which is embedded a metallic terminal 21. -The latter, as shown, has a threaded opening 28 therein for receiving a screw adapted to electrically connect the end of an outgoing electrical connection (not shown) to said terminal. The-molding 2! may be slotted. as at 29, to uncover a portion of the periphery of terminal 21 and thus permit the connection-of one end of the coil winding'thereto by means of solder or other suitable fastening means. i
The coil winding 30 (Fig. 3) may be wound in anyv suitable known way on the central portion 24 of spool 2|. In one suitable commercial embodiment, winding 30 consists of No. 14, single enameled, copper, magnet wire. The surface of spool portion 24 is preferably covered with a thin layer 31 of impregnated fabric tape or the like, and a similar protective coating 32 may be provided about the periphery of winding 30. Before the winding of the coil is begun, a bare end of the wire is extended through hollow rivet 25 and soldered or otherwise suitably secured to lug 20 for insuring a good electrical connection. After the winding is completed, the other end 33 of the wire is laid in slot 29 and soldered to terminal member 21.
The finished coil may then be securely and rigidly mounted in casing ii in a novel manner which insures good magnetic contact between core l2 and stator poles i0, iii. The mounting also makes loosening of and consequent damage to the coil structure by vibration most unlikely. As
vided for this latter purpose. Bolts or screws 34 also provide a good and positive electrical connection between plam or lamination i4 and casing ii and, hence. between the latter and the coil winding to ground the same.
There is thus provided a novelly constructed coil for an ignition system or the like, which is of a simple and sturdy nature and which will operate efiiciently and effectively over long periods of use and be substantially unaffected by vibration and shock. Additionally, the novel structure of the coil renders it possible to secure the same to its mounting or support in a novel and effective manner whereby the coil core and flux carrying stator poles cooperate to insure an efiicient flow of magnetic flux through the coil winding without the presence of eddy currents, such as may be set up through-the fastening means of structures heretofore known. The present invention also embodies novel and advantageous means'for making the necessary electrical connections to the coil winding, said means making it possible to quickly remove the coil from its mounting for replacement,'inspection or repair. The novel coil structure provided is also made up of a minimum number of parts assembled in a novel manner to provide as nearly as possible a rigid, unitary structure which may be readily and inexpensively manufactured.
Although only a single embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described in the foregoing specification, it is to be expressly undershown, the lower faces 19 of the ends of core 12 are placed in engagement with the upper ends of stator poles l0, l0 which are flush with the adjacent surface of casing ii. A screw or stud bolt 34 is then extended through the opening in each of the ears or lugs ii and threaded into tapped recesses in casing ii. Since the faces i8 of lugs I! are slightly above the adjacent surfaces of housing ii when faces iii of the coil core .engage pole pieces i0, ID, the tightening of screws 34'wili spring said lugs downwardly and insure firm contact between the engaging surfaces of the coil core and stator poles, thereby resulting in efficient transmission of the magnetic flux which flows through these parts during operation of the magneto. The resiliency of the lugs i! will also tend to lock screws 34 against loosening by vibration. If desired, additional locking means of any known kind may be prostood that changes may be made therein, particularly in the design and arrangement of the parts illustrated, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as will now be clear to those skilled in the art. For a definition of t e limits of the invention, reference is had primarily to the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In apparatus of the class described, a laminated metallic core, a spool of insulating material molded around a central portion of said core, said spool consisting of end flanges extending radially from said core and an intermediate portion having a continuously curved circumferential surface,
' faces of said lugs being in a plane parallel to and spaced a short distance from the plane of the corresponding surface of said core. I
