Description

July 13, 1948. c F RANDOLPH 2,445,308
UUUUUUUUUUUU RT Patented July 13, 1948 TUCK END SUPPORT Colifford F. Randolph, Brookly-n, N. Y., assignor to International Cigar Machinery Comparma corperation of 'New Jersey Application September 15, 1943, Serial No. 502,419 Claim. (Ol. 131-30) This' invention relates to 'cigar machines, more particularly` to improvements, in the wrapperapplying mechanism thereof. Heretofore the tuck endof the cigar in thewrapper-applying mechanism, was supported by a. nest of rollers, as shown in the patent to J., Pc. Burning, No. 2,290,171, while the bunch was revolved durin the application of the wrapper to the bunch. Accordingly, a different nest of ro ilers had to be supplied for every Variation in the diameter or shape of the tuck end of the cigar bunch.
It is an Object of the present invention to provide instead of the said nest of rollers, a cup conforming to the shape of and supporting the tapered tuck end of the cigar bunch. Adjustment of said cup is also provided to accommodate tuck ends of greater or lesser diameter and the same or substantiaily the same general shape. Said cup may also be adjusted to compensate for wearing thereof which, surprisingiy, may be sufcient to affect the position of the cigar bunch relative to the roils which apply the wrapper thereto.
With this and other objects not specifcally mentioned in View, the invention conssts in certain constructions and combinations which will be hereinafter described and then specificaliy set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate the same or like parts:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of the wrapper-applying mechanism of a cigar machine equipped with the cup of my invention instead of a nest of roliers; and
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the bracket in which the cup is supported, showing the manner in which the stem of the cup is secured therein to permit vertical adjustment of the cup.
Referring to Fig. 1, wherein the invention is shown associated with a wrapping machine of the type described in the patent to J. P. Burning, No. 2,290,171, issued July 21, 1942, the top rollers o and 12 are supported at their ends in brackets M, la and lt, 20, respectively. Brackets |4 and 18 are connected by a tie rod 22, and brackets |6 and 20 are connected by a tie rod 24.
Brackets M and la are pivotally mounted on the shaft 26 of one of the side rollers 28, and the brackets 16 and 20 are pivotally `mounted on the shait 30 of the other side roller 32. The shaft 26 of the roller 28 is supported at one end by a bracket 34 and at the other end by a bracket (not shown), both oi these brackets being con- 2 nected by a tie rod %and pvotally mounted on a sha'ft 33 supported from a housing (not: shown). The ends of the shaft 30 of rolier 32 are supported by a bracket 40 M partialiy shown in Fig. 1 and pivoted onshaft 33.
Brackets aii and 34 are connected by'links (not shown), corresponding to shown in Fig. la of the above mentioned Burning patent, to arms (not shown) corresponding to the arms Gb and G'ic of said patent, which are connected to a lever (not shown), corresponding to lever %Ta of said patent and operated by a cam lever (not shown) corresponding to the lever G'lf thereoi, to open the rollers 28 and 32 to admit the cigar bunch which is to be wrapped and then move them into positions wherein they support the bunch.
On the tie rod 24 is secured a finger 50 which is urged upwardly by a compression spring 52 seated against a block 54 fastened on tie rod 42, to maintain the roller 2 in a position wherein it engages the top of the inserted cigar bunch. Te rod 22 is provided with a finger 56, which engages a compression spring (not shown) seated on a block (not shown) fastened on tie rod 36, to maintairi roller o in a similar position.
The header block is supported from the housing (not shown), in the same manner as header block B in Fig. 2 of the Burning patent and serves to support the head end of the inserted cigar. The bunch postioner is Similar to that shown in the Burning patent and consists of a bent arm 62 fastened on one end of the shaft (i i supported in a bracket 55 secured on shaft 38, the other end of shaft 84 being provided with an arm 83 carrying a pin 'in engaging a, groove in the head 'il of a rod '12. The latter is operated by a link (not shown), corresponding to link 63 of the Burning patent (Fig. 7) and actuated by a cam iever corresponding to the lever 65 thereof.
On bracket 66 is mounted a cup 16 which is adapted to support the tuck end of the cigar bunch. Cup TE is provided With a stem 18 which is inserted in a vertical hole of bracket 66 and secured therein by a set screw 82 engaging a key 84 mounted in a verticai slot ormed in a predetermined position in one side of hole 80 and engaging a key way in the stem 18 which is properly located to maintain cup 16 in a position aligned with the cigar bunch. The key 84 has a s liding fit in the keyway in stem 13 to permit the cup 16 to be adjusted vertically when set screw 82 is oosened. The bracket 68 is split and its split also pivoted on shaft' 38 and connected by a tie rod 42 to a Similar bracket' the links 39a and 39'dends are connected by a screw 86. Thus, upon unloosening screw 88, the bracket 66 may be slid along shaft 38 to position the cup 16 for various Iengths of cigar bunches.
The shape of the cup conforms to the tapered tuck end of the cigar bunch which it supports. Thus upon adjusting the cup vertically, after unloosening set screw 82, the cup may accommodate greater or lesser diameters of tapered tuck ends of the same or substantially the same general shape.
What is cla'med is:
In a cigar machine provided with rollers coacting to revolve a cigar bunch about which a Wrapper is to be wound spira-lly, and a header block adapted to support the head end of said cigar bunch; a cup adapted to engage and support the lower sides of the tuck ends of cigar bunches of the same general shape but varying diameters, said cup having a generally horizontal elongated trough-shaped cavity of Semi-circular cross-section open at each end and tapering longitudinally in general conformity to the tape' of the tuck end of the cigar bunch supported thereon, supporting means for said cup arranged directly below the longitudinal axis of said cup whereby the cup may be shifted vertically and longitudinally to position the head end of said REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
