Description

' June 22; 1948. N. B.'WILLIAMSON 01mm FOR sow mes Filed Aug. 6, 1945 INVENTQR Wanna/2B. Wzamw/z ATTORNEY Patented June 22, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CART FOR GOLF BAGS Norman B. Williamson, Portland, Ores.
. Application August 6, 1945, Serial No. 609,128
This invention relates generally to vehicles and particularly to a cart for golf bags.
The main object of this invention is to provide an exceedingly simple and efllcient form of cart for golf bags and clubs.
The second object is to provide a conveyance of the class described which is easily collapsible for storage and transportation purposes.
I accomplish these and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specification, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged end elevation of the vehicle with the bag removed therefrom and with the top portion broken away, the view being taken along the line 2+2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the collapsed ve-. hic e.
Fig. 4 is a section taken along the line 4-4 in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken along the line 5-5 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a section taken along the line 6-6 in Fig. 5.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing there is shown a pair of wheels l0 each of which are mounted on a screw I I which is threaded into the knee member l2 which in turn is connected by means of the bars 13 and 14 to a block IS. The bars l2 and I4 are pivotally connected at their ends by means of the pins I 6 and screws II to the members I2 and ii. The members It and I4 are provided with downturned lugs l8 and I! to the former of which is attached a spring 20 whose opposite end is attached to the curved link 2|. The link 2| isattached by means of a rivet 22 to the lever 23 which is pivotally mounted on the pin 24.
The purpose of this structure is to provide a knee action to the device. Under normal travelling conditions the load is spring supported but when the lever 23 is drawn over its center, the ghelells II can be collapsed to the position shown Mounted on the block I! is an elongated tubular frame 25 to whose upper end is secured a band clamp 2! against which the mouth 21 of a golf bag 24 can rest. From the lower end of the frame 28 extends the angular foot 20 and the lower end 20 of the bag 28 is spaced from the foot 28. A bolt II which passes through the bottom it and the foot 24 is provided with a wing nut 22 by means of'which the bag 28 may be held in tenslon.
It is also desirable to provide a handle 22 which may be made removable by means of a coupling 24 or it may be hinged for collapsing purposes 3 Claims. I (Cl. 280-40) without departing from the spirit of this invention.
It can be seen from the foregoing that when the device is not in use it can be stored in an exceedingly small space-scarcely larger than an ordinary golf bag itself, but when in use the bag is held in an upright position giving the utmost convenience to the golfer and saving him the necessity of carrying the bag around the course.
It will be understood that while a bag 28 is shown as a part of the device, in some instances the bag will be omitted and a rack provided for holding the various clubs in position-the rack, of course, functioning in the same manner as does the bag.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a frame,
a block attached to said frame, a knee member disposed on each side of said block, a pair of bars connecting each knee member to said block by means of pivot pins. said'bars and the lines between said pins forming substantially a parallelogram, a wheel mounted on each-knee member, a spring for urging said wheels toward each other. and means for releasing the tension on said spring for the purpose of permitting said wheels to collapse and fold along side of said frame.
2. In a device of the class described, a frame, av block attached to said frame, a knee member disposed on each side of said block, a pair of bars connecting each knee member to said block by means of pivot pins, said bars and, the lines between said pins forming substantially a parallelogram, a wheel mounted on each member, a spring for urging said wheels toward each other, a toggle lever forming an anchor for said .spring for increasing or decreasing the tension thereof.
3. A device of the class described having in combination a frame on which a golf bag can be mounted, a block attached to said frame, a knee member disposed on each side of said block, a pair of bars connecting each knee member to said block in a manner to form two parallelograms which are hingedly joined at the corners thereof, a wheel pivotally mounted on each-knee member, a spring interposed between a bar of one pair and a corresponding bar of the other pair, and means for varying the tension on said spring.
