UNITED STATES PATENT Orr-ICE.
HORACE J. CLARK, OF NORTH EAST, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR FILLING CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,378, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed January 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE J. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at North East, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Filling Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in providing a new and. improved machine for filling cans with prepared fruit, meat, &c., and is intended for use in canning-establishments, where it is desirable to fill many cansat one operation, and thereby save much time and labor.
My device is illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings, as follows:
Figure l is a side elevation of the upper part and a transverse vertical section of the lower part of the machine. Fig. 2.is a plan view of the top of the machine. Fig. 3 is a plan view of that part of the machine which is below the line w x in Fig. 1. v
The construction of my device is as follows:
A AA A are the corner posts-0f the framework, and serve as guides for a vertically-moving plate, B.
J is a cross-stay plate, and-serves as a guide for plunger-stems 1o 10 p, &c., which work in holes through said plates.
P P P, 850., are the plungers, and are attached to the plunger-stems p, which are attached to or fastened in the movable plate B.
T is a trough or hopper, the bottom of which is provided with funnel-shaped holes E E E, &c.,which correspondin number with the number of plungers, and are located directly below the same.
Below the trough T is a drawer for receiving the cans to be filled, (see D,) and is provided with perforations d d d, &c., on its bottom. When this drawer is in place the cans therein come so that their openings are directly below the funnel-shaped openings E.
G O C, &c., represent the cans in position for filling.
Belowthe drawer D is a drip-trough G, for catching the drip from the perforations in the drawer. The drip consists of overflow from the cans when being filled. An openingin the catch-trough Gr allows the catch to flow into a second trough,H, from which it can be dipped up into the-hopper T.
L is the actuating-lever for moving the plunger-frame, a rod, 1%, connecting the said lever L with the said plunger-frame. The rod R has a cross-head, which works in guide-frames S on each side of the frame-work of the machine, and also works in a slot, 1, in the lever L.
W is a counter-weight to assist the movement of the. plunger-frame.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The cans to be filled are placed in the drawer D, and it is shoved into place, which brings the mouths of the cans directly below the funnel-shaped holes E in the hopper T. The material to be canned is then placed in the hopper, and passes through the openings into the cans. The operator then moves the lever L, which causes the plungers P to pass down through the openings E into the cans and pack the material into the cans. By repeating the movement of the plungers two or three times the cans will be packed full. The overflow or dripping will pass between the cans and into the trough below. The cans being filled, and it being desirous to withdraw the drawer to remove the filled cans and replace them with empty ones, the plungers will be adjusted so as to close the openings E and still permit the drawer to be removed, which will prevent the material remaining in the hopper passing out through the openings E.
In the machine as illustrated twelve cans can be filled at once 5 but, if desired, the machine may be enlarged to accommodate very many more.
What I claim as new is- 1. In a machine for filling cans, the combination of the drawer or other receptacle for the cans with a superimposed hopper for receiving the material to be canned, which is provided with funnel-shaped openings in position to be immediately above the cans whenin place for filling, and the plungers P, guide-plate J, movable plate B, and means, substantially as shown, for moving said plungers vertically.
2. In a machine for filling cans, a series of plungers, P I? P, 850., attached vertically-movable frame-work, and means, substantially as shown, for moving said frame-Work vertically, in combination with a hopper for receiving the material to be canned, which hopper is placed below said plungers, and is provided with a series of funnel-shaped openings, E, arranged in order to correspond with the serial order of the plnngers, and a receptacle for the cans to be filled, in which the cans may be placed in serial order to correspond with the series of funnel-shaped openings and the plungers,al1substantially as and for the purposes mentioned.
3. In a machine for filling cans, the comhi- 15 nation, substantially as shown, of the following elements: the frame-work A A A A, movable frame and plungers B P P I, &c., and plunger guide frame J, hopper '1, with openings E E E, &c., drawer D, with openings (1 cl (1, 850., 20 and catch-troughs G and H.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
