2 Claims.
This invention relates to a special sanding disc applicable to planev surface finishing work.
The object of my invention is to provide a surface sanding disc, constructed for receiving and retaining interchangeable surface sheets of abrasive material thereon, without cementing or gluing same, as is Ordinarily required with the sanding units now in common use.
Another object is to provide a demountable sanding disc that can readily be mounted on any power drive shaft end, applicable to either solid of flexible shaft units.
A further object isv to produce a sanding disc structure applicable to large sanding units, designed to withstand excentrically applied working pressure, without affecting its operation.
A still further object is to provide an interchangeable abrasive sheet sandingdisc that is simple in construction, easily and efiiciently operated and that can be manufactured at a very low cost.
These several objects are attained in the preferred form by the construction and arrangement of parts more fully hereinafter set forth.
Similar parts on all drawings are marked by similar numerals or letters.
Fig. 1 is a back view of my demountable sanding disc showing the general construction and arrangement of the clamping frame, and the shaft mounting head attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the assembled sanding unit, showing the relative position of the various operating parts.
Fig. 3 is another back view of the disc with the clamping frame and bearing mounting unit removed, as on the line 33 of the Fig 2, showing the means of folding and clamping the interchangeable abrasive sheets to the mounting disc section,
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of the Fig. 1, showing the assembled section construction.
Fig. 5 is a top view of the assembled sanding disc showing the disc abrasive surface.
Fig. 6 is an edge view of the modified bearing unit for mounting the assembled disc on a power drive shaft end.
In general, my demountable sanding disc comprises a double disc assembly united by a rigid shaft mounting head, and provided with a resilient member beneath the attached abrasive sheet surface, the sheet being retained thereon by special clamping means.
I will now describe more fully the detailed construction of my device, referring to the drawings and the marks thereon.
The mounting disc l is made a thin, circular section of predetermined diameter and thickness, preferably of wood, or plywood, or some suitable light metal, turned to a true circular circumference and corresponding faces, and provided with a center bearing recess a therethrough, positioned concentric with the disc circumference. Adjacent the mounting disc I, on the back side thereof, is mounted a clamp frame disc 2, preferably made of the sam material and of the same diameter, but preferably formed with radially positioned spoke sections 1), and likewise provided with a central bearing recess 0 therethrough,
positioned concentric with the disc circumference and the adjacent mounting disc recess a. The tWo discs I and 2 are slightly separated by a thin sheet filler 3 interposed therebetween, centrally located and symmetrically positioned about the common disc axis. A series of countersunk clamping screws 4 are mounted around the disc edges, positioned symmetrically about the disc centers, designed for firmly clamping the adjoining disc rims tightly together. On-the back side of. the clamp disc 2 is fixedly mounted a metal power shaft driving head 5, centrally located thereon. The driving head 5 is preferabl formed of a thin rectangular metal plate d having a tubular drive shaft bearing e projected from one side thereof and a threaded bearing spindle f projected from the opposite plate side, both units being positioned concentric with the disc axis of rotation. The driving head plate (1 is connected to the discs 1 and 2 by the radially positioned clamp bolts 6 as shown in the Fig. 4 of the drawings, and reacts as a stiffening collar for the assembled disc section for the larger sized units. However, the clamp bolts 6 may be extended through the clamp disc 2 walls only, if desired, greatly facilitating the interchanging of the abrasive sheets on smaller sized sanding discs. The thin sheet filler 3 is preferably of a size to include the bearing clamp screws 6 should they be mounted through both disc sections. The tubular shaft bearing section e is made of a size to receive and fit the end of the power drive shaft with which the sanding disc is to be used, and is provided with a suitable set screw 1 for securely attaching the disc assembly thereon. If desired, or required by the special driving shaft end, the tubular bearing section e may be internally threaded, as an attaching means. Further, in cases where full abrasion surface is required, the bearing spindle 1 may be shortened to extend terial, is made of a diameter slightly greater than the mounting disc, and is formed With projected notched edges 9 around the entire'circumferen'ce thereof, all foldable over the pad 8 and mounting disc I edges, the notched edges g being projected between the mounting disc and clanip disc edges, and securely clamped therebetween by the clamp bolts 4, uniting the sections into a rigidabrasive disc assembly, ready for use. resilient surface disc pad mounted over the outer face of said mounting disc, a circular sheet of suitable abrasive material of larger diameter, mounted over said resilient pad disc with the extended sheet edges notched and folded over the mounting disc edges and projected between the adjoining disc edges and tightly clamped therein by the disc clamping bolts, and a suitable shaft head unit mounted on thenopposite side of said clamp disc; positioned concentric with the assembled disc aXis of rotation, designed for mounting said sanding disc on the end of a suitable driving shaft section.
