Description
June 22,- 1948. B. J. TAMARIN 2,443,701.
DUST GUARD FOR ELECTRIC CORD TAKE-UP HEELS Filed on. 16, 1945 3 w I J 5 '1 1 3 6 4 8 /5 INVENTOR. BERNARD J. TAMARIN HLS ATTORNE Patented June 22, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DUST GUARD FOR ELECTRIC CORD TAKE-UP REELS 1 Claim.
My invention is a dust guard for an electric cord take-up reel and is designed to prevent dirt, grit, sand or like foreign matter from seeping into the space between the casing and rotor of a reel so that complementary contacts located in such space are protected against the deterioratin efiects of such foreign matter, thereby assuring proper and efiicient operation of the contacts and reducing the necessity for repairs and replacements.
My improved dust guard comprises an annular ring of substantially channel shape cross section having a radial web between flanges bent transversely thereto and a flexible annular strip of substantially conoidal frustrum cross section, the inner edge of said strip being gripped by a flange of said ring which extends first axially and then radially, and the other flange of the ring being spaced radially from the gripping flange and pressing the flexible annular strip intermediate its edges.
The principle of my invention and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle Will further appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a transverse, sectional view of an electric cord reel having my improved dust guard embodied therein; Fig. 2 is a transverse, sectional view, of a detached dust guard embodying my invention; Fig. 3 is a sectional view, on a reduced scale, and parts broken away, taken on the 33 line of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detailed view of part of the flexible strip comprised in the guard.
As illustrated in the drawings, my improved dust guard comprises an annular ring I of substantially channel shape cross section formed from a radial web 2 having its edges bent transversely thereto to form flanges 3 and 4. The flange- 3 first extends axially and then radially and is bent over the inner edge 5 of a flexible annular strip 6 of felt or the like, containing an aperture 6' for the passage of a conductor. The whole of the flange 4 is spaced radially from the flange 3 and its edge presses against the strip 6 intermediate the edges thereof, so as to position the strip 6 in substantially the form of a cone frustrum.
A dust guard so constructed may be incorporated in an electric cord reel by welding the web 2 to the casing 1 of a reel, concentric with the arbor 8. A spring biased rotor 9 is journalled on the arbor 8 and has a flange l0 against which the strip 6 is pressed to form an enclosed dust-roof 4 space between the casing 1 and the rotor 9. The
rotor serves as a take-up device for an electric cord II having its conductors connected with annular contacts I2 and 13 carried by the reel and coacting with contacts 14 and I5 mounted in an insulating block 10 carried by the casing l. The contacts I 4 and I5 are connected with suitable conductors leading to a source of electric current.
The flanges 3 and 4 maintain the strip 6 in snug bearing engagement against the flange I0 so as to stabilize the rotation of the rotor 9 and form an effective seal excluding dust and dirt from the space between the casing l and the flange l0 and from the complementary contacts l2, l3, l4 and I5.
What I claim is:
A dust guard for an electric cord take-up device comprising an annular ring of substantially channel shape cross section having a radial web between flanges bent transversely thereto and a flexible annular strip of substantially conoidal irustrum cross section, a flange extending first axially and then radially of said ring being bent over an inner edge of said strip and another flange of said ring pressing said strip intermediate its edges the whole of said last named flange being spaced radially from said first named flange.
BERNARD J. TAMARIN.
