Description

(ModeL) G. SMITH. VEHICLE SPRING. No. 244,328. Patented Ju 1y 12,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SMITH, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO' THE SPIRAL BUGGY SPRING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
VEHICLE-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,328, dated July 12, 1881.
' Application filed March 1,1881. Modem To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SMITH, of the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to, the letters of reference marked thereon, which form partof this specification, and in which- Figure l is a bottom-plan view, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, of my improved vehiclespring.
My invention relates to that class of spring wagons or buggies in which the spring is arranged within the body and under the seat.
The improvement consists in the combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter more fully to be described and specifically claimed.
A indicates the vehicle-body, and B the coneshaped spiral spring, which is secured to the bottom of the body under the seat.
arranged within the spring, passes up through the apex thereof, and is provided with a nut, 1), upon its screw-threaded upper end, for the purpose of varying the tension of the spring.
E E indicate the side bars of the runningframe, which barsare provided with clips F F,
secured to the under side of the vehicle-body, and transversely to its length are the bars G G,
The rod 0,
in which the rock-shafts H H have their bearings. Each rock-shaft is provided with two outwardly-projecting arms, I I, connecting 3 5 with the clips of the side bars, and each rockshaft is also provided with an in wardly-extending arm, K, these said arms being connected with the rod 0 by means of a link, L. The bottom of the vehicle-body is provided with an 40 opening, M, for the links L to Work through.
' The above arrangement is strong and simple,
and an excess of weight in any part of the vehicle-body will not tilt the same, .but depress all parts of the body alike.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The rock-shafts H H, provided with inwardly-extending arms K K, and arranged longitudinally with the body, in combination with links L L, rod 0, spring B, and nut D, all substantially in the manner herein described.
2. The combination, with side bars, E E, clips F F, and arms I I, of the rock-shafts H H, arms K K, links L L, spring B, rod 0, and nut, all arranged to operate substantially in the manner herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- GEORGE SMITH. Witnesses:
