Description

' U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. SHIRREFF, OF BROCKVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO RICHARD THOMAS STEELE, OF SAME PLACE.
CLOTHES-WRINGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,325, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed March 28, 1881. (No model.) Patented in Canada January 17, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES JAMES SHIR- REFF, of Brockville, in the county of Leeds, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Wringers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to the combination, with a clothes-wringer, of a frame by which the wringeris attached to a tub, and an apronframe carried by the same, having arms pivoted eccentrically to the frame, so that by the adjustment of the apron from'a vertical to a horizontal position theframe clamps the wringer to the edge of the tub and supplies a means for conveying the clothes to or from the rollers into the tub.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clotheswringer having my combined clamp and apron device Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
A A are the standards of an ordinary wooden-frame wringer, in which are journaled the rollers B B, geared together, andcompressed by bar C, spring D, and set-screw E, in the usual way.
F are the legs of the clamp-frame, held to the standards A, which are notched to somewhat less than the thickness of an ordinary tub-stave, by a bolt, G, passing through an elongated holein the legs F, whereby an adj usting motion is allowed thereto to bind against the side of the tub when the clamping-power is applied, as hereinafter described.
The bolts G pass through a yielding cushion, H, or asuitable spring intervening between the leg and standard and through the standard, the ends provided with a thumb-screw, 1, to contract or expand the spring or cushion to suit the space J to the thickness of the stave of the tub.
From the top downward to a suitable extent, the legs F are slotted, as shown at K, to receivecam-bracketsL,whichareprovidedwith a downward prolongation, a, to bear against the standards A or a fixed block, b, thereon, to support the brackets horizontally, which are pivoted eccentrically in the slot K, so that the end-of the brackets, by cam movement, will force out the upper end of the legs, and by pivotal movement on the bolt G cause the lower ends to bind against the side of the tub and compress it against the standards A for fixing the wringer to the edge of the tub.
The brackets L at their outer ends are provided with side sockets, N, into which fit the ends of a hand-bar or roller, 0, and said brackets support rollers P, journaled thereto intermediately on screws Q, to form an apron-frame, on which the clothes are carried from or to the wringer-rollers, according to which side of the wringer the frame is placed.
For stability the legs F are connected by a bar, B.
When the apron-frame is placed on the out- 6 side of the wringcr, the clothes, after passing from the washing-tub, are passed through the rollers and carried therefrom upon the apron-frame, so as to be deposited in an adjoiningly-placed tub without distributing the clothes therein by hand. When the apronframe, consisting of the brackets L and rollers O P, is raised from a horizontal to a vertical position, as shown indotted lines'in Fig. 2, the legs F will be released from the tub for the 7 5 removal of the wringer. When the apron-frame is attached to that side of the wringer outside the washing-tub, the clothes are conveyed to fall into the adjoining receiving-tub, so that the tub will be filled without distributing the clothes therein by hand.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the wringer-frame A, of the legs F, bolts G, and cam-brackets L, having downward prolongation a, and carrying rollers O P, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An apron-frame consisting of cam-hi ack ets L and rollers O P, said cam-brackets being eccentrically pivoted within slot K to legs F, attached to standard A, as and for the purpose set forth. I
v C. J. SHIRREFF. Witnesses:
