(Mode-l.)
o. o. NYQVIST. STORM RUDDER.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES O. NYQVIST, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
'STORM-RUBBER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,285, dated July 12, 1881.l
Application iled January 19, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES O. NYQvIsT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in StormRudders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Figure 1 is a plan view of' my improvement, illustrating its use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional front elevation of the same, taken through the line x w, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The object of this invention is to enable seamen to readily control their vessels should the rudder become unshipped or disabled in a storm.
The invention consists in placing rudders on the sides of vessels, and in arranging suitable mechanism for operatin g the said rudders, whereby the vessel can be guided and oontrolled should the ordinary rudder become disabled, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the hull, and B the rudder, of an ordinary vessel.
To the middle part of each side of the vessel `A is hinged a rudder, C, which is made of plate-iron, and is so formed as to lie closely against and t upon the said side of the vessel, where it may be secured in place, when not .in use, by an eye, staple, and pin, or other suitable fastening.
To the upper end of the rudder C, or of its pivot or post, is rigidly attached al1 arm or lever, D, to the end of which are attached two ropes, E. The ropes E extend in opposite directions parallel with the side of the vessel A, pass around two pulleys, F, pass back and pass in opposite directions around two pulleys, G, and their ends are attached to and wound in opposite directions around the drum of a Windlass, H, so that one of the ropes E will be unwound from the said drum as the other is wound uponit. The windlassesI-Iare placed amidships, and are secured tothe deck or other suitable support. The pulleys F Gare secured to the deck or other suitable support, and the ropes E and the pulleys F G may be covered with a bridge to protect them from being injured or their operation impeded.
lWith this construction, should the rudder B be unshipped or otherwise disabled, the vessel A can be controlled and guided by the storm-rudders C, each of which operates independently of the other, and both of which must be used to control the vessel.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the sides of a vessel, A, the rudders C, and the arms or levers '1), of the ropes E, the pulleys F G, and the windlasses H, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the storm-rudders can be operated to control and guide the vessel, as
set forth.
