This invention relates to pay roll time calculators wherein the time worked by an employee, even ,though gaps in his time for lunch hours have been had, can readily be ascertained.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple hand calculator that can be rested upon the desk of a time clerk and by the simple manipulation of two relatively movable parts, a reading of the total hours worked during the day can be easily reckoned.
According to the invention, a diiferenti-al gear mechanism is connected between a knob and a dial to obtain, when the knob is rotated to register its pointer on a fixed scale an opposite rotation of the dial. When the knob pointer comes to rest on the time at which the employee stopped work a reading of the total hours and fractions thereof can be read on the dial which has been rotated at the index. The fixed dial is held fixed only while the calculation is being made. If it is desired to add to the original hours, hours in the day which have been later worked by the employee, the xed dial bearing the time can be adjusted to register the new starting point with the pointer. Thereafter the pointer is turned to the next stopping point. The new hours will be added to the rst hours and the total hours employed for both workings will now be read on the oppositely rotated scale.

Referring now to Figs. 1 to 7, description will be made of the first form of the invention wherein I5 indicates a base on which there is stood upright two horizontally spaced supporting members I6 and I1. These members are held in their horizontally spaced relationship at their upper endsv by vertically'spaced spacer bars I8 and I9. The lower ends of the members have outwardly turned flanges 2l which are secured to the base by screws 22.
In the front supporting member there is fitted tightly a bearing sleeve 23 shouldered, as indicated at 2'4, to be inserted through the supporty ing member YI6 from its rear face. This member tion, of the calculator of Fig. 1, viewed along the line 2 2 thereof looking in the direction of its arrows.

is shown in detail in Fig. 5. The front end of the sleeve 23 has an annular recess 25 adapted to receive a spring lock ring 26. Over the sleeve 23 there is disposed a curved leaf spring 21 bearing against the front face of the member I 6. An external dial 28 is fitted on the sleeve 23 and is held in place after rst compressing the leaf spring 21 and engaging the lock ring 26. The dial 28 is retained in its adjusted position by the spring 21. However, while time is being calculated it remains stationary, the other parts being the only ones moved at this time.
The time dial 28 has a circular recess 3| adapted to receive a rotating dial 32 which is press fitted on a knurled portion 33 (Fig. 4), of a sleeve 35 journalled in the sleeve 23 and hollowed to receive a main drive shaft 38. Keyed to the front end of this drive shaft is a knob 31 having Ia pointer 38 adapted to register with the scale'cn the time dial 28. The opposite end of the shaft is journalled in a bearing sleeve 39 secured to the rear supporting member l1. Im-
mediately in front of the rear supporting member l1 there is xed to the shaft a bevel plate gear "il by a pin 42.
This bevel plate gear 4I forms part of a gear mechanism which includes further 'a bevel pinion G3 pivoted about a vertical axle 'and journalled in the spacer bar I8. This pinion is adapted to be driven by the plate gear 4l as the knob il]Y is turned and drives in an opposite direction fromV nlmatching with the spur gears. The gear dial 12 the plate gear 4I a second plate gear which Vis'- end porti tightly fitted upon a reduced low sleeve 35 to drive sleeve turned.
The time dial '28 (Fig. 1), is marked oi 'ih' twenty-four parts to represent the hours of the day. Starting with twelve midnight at the top of the dial the marks Vare numbered upto twelve noon which will appear at'the bottom of the dial. Beginning from twelve noonthe marks are numbered from one to twelve midnight. The spaces between 'marks can be divided off into fteen mlnute periods. Extending up from the base I5 and secured thereto by the same screws 22 that secure the flange 2l of the'front supporting member I5 therewith, is a transparent member 111 having a pointed upper end 4-8 with an indicating line 9 thereon. Also on this pointed end is a window 51| through which numbers on the rotating dial 32 will appear.
Assuming that the man starts work at twelve oclock midnight the time dial 28 will be adjusted to have the twelve midnight mark on the indicatorline 48. The rotatable dial 32 is numbered from one 'tptwenty-four'"and so indicated with reference to marks ontheperiphery of the same. Between marks there may be smaller marks indicating fractions bf the hour. The rotating dial is aligned with the indicator line 49 so thatits mark 24'wil1 appear through'the window 5 I. The pointer 38 is so arranged in .its connection with the rotating Adial 32' that it will automatically arrive at "the indicator line.

Referring now to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10, a "slightly'dlfierent arrangement will be found. Instead of `the inner dial being rotated Aas the knob is turned -the `outer dial is rotated and the reading taken from the same. The entire mechanism is pitched at an angle so that the dials appear on'inclined face.

A pay roll time calculator comprising supporting members, a time dial journalled for adjustment on said members, a fixed indicating mark on said time dial, an hour registry dial concentric with the time dial, a shaft journalled on the supporting members, a pointer xed to the shaft and adapted to register with the scale of the dials, and means operatively connected between the shaft and the hour dial for eecting rotation of the dial in an opposite direction to the rotation of the shaft, a fixed indicating mark on the calculator from which the number of hours which have been worked may be read off the rotated or hour dial, said means connected between the shaft and the hour dial comprising gearing including two plate gears concentric with the shaft and an interconnected pinion gear journalled for rotation on the supporting members about a vertical axis.

A pay roll time calculator comprising supporting members, a time dial journalled for adjustment on said members, a fixed indicating mark on said time dial, an hour registry dial concentric with the time dial, a shaft journalled on the supporting members, a pointer fixed to the shaft and adapted to register with the scale of the dials, and means operatively connected between the shaft and the hour dial for eecting rotation of the dial in an opposite direction to the rotation of the shaft, a fixed indicating mark on the calculator from which the number of hours which have been worked may be read off the rotated or hour dial, a knob connected with the pointer and the shaft to effect the turning move ment of the shaft.

A pay roll time calculator comprising sup- Yporting members, a time dial journalled for adjustment on said members, a xed indicating mark on said time dial, an hour registry dial concentric with the time dial, a shaft journalled on the supporting members, a pointer fixed to the shaft and adapted to register with the scale of the dials, and means operatively connected between the shaft and the hour dial for effecting rotation of the dial in an opposite direction to the rotation of the shaft, a Xed indicating mark on the calculator from which the number of hours which have -been worked may be read on' the rotated or hour dial, said time dial having a recess therein and said hour registering dial lying Within the recess of the time dial so that its face will lie flush with the front face of the time dial.

A pay roll time calculator comprising supporting members, a time dial journalled for adjustment on said members, an hour registry dial concentric with the time dial, a shaft journalled on the supporting members, a pointer fixed to the shaft and adapted to register with the scale of the dials, and means operatively connected between the shaft and the hour dial for effecting rotation of the dial in an opposite direction to the rotation of the shaft, a fixed indicating mark on the calculator from which the number of hours which have been worked may .be read off the rotated or hour dial, said time dial having a recess therein and said hour registering dial lying within the recess of the time dial so that its face will lie ush .with the front face of the time dial, a knob connected with the pointer and the shaft to effect the turning movement of the shaft.

A pay roll time calculator comprising supporting members, a time dial journalled for adjustment on said members, an hour registry dial concentric with the time dial, a shaft journalled on the supporting members, a pointer fixed to the shaft and adapted to register with the scale of the dials, and means operatively connected between the shaft and the hour dial for effecting rotation of the dial in an opposite direction to the rotation of the shaft, a fixed indicating mark on the calculator from which the number of hours which have been worked may be read off the rotated or hour dial, said time registering dial being concentric with the hour registering dial and lying within the center of the same. the number of hours being taken from the external dial.

A pay roll time calculator comprising supporting members, a time dial journalled for adjustment on said members, an hour registry dial concentric with the time dial, a shaft journalled on the supporting members, a pointer fixed to the shaft and adapted to register with the scale of the dials, and means operatively connected between the shaft and the hour dial for effecting rotation of the dial in an opposite direction to the rotation of the shaft, a fixed indicating mark on the calculator from which the number of hours which have been worked may be read off the rotated or hour dial, said time .registering dial being concentric with the hour registering dial and lying within the center of the same, the number of hours being taken from the external dial, spur gears journalled on the device at equally spaced circumferential distances about the time gear, said time dial having gear teeth on its outer periphery meshing with the spur gears whereby said time dial will be retained in centered relation with respect to external hour dial.

A pay roll time calculator comprising a base, upstanding horizontally spaced supporting members secured to the base, a bearing sleeve xed to one of the members, a journal sleeve journalled in the bearing sleeve, a time dial fixed to the journal sleeve, a shaft journalled in the journal sleeve and in the other of said members, a plate gear xed to said shaft to be rotated thereby, a pinion meshing with the plate gear and journalled on the supporting members, a second plate gear meshing with the bevel pinion and journalled on said journal sleeve, an hour dial fixed to the sleeve, whereby said hour dial is adapted to operate in reverse direction to the shaft, and a pointer on the shaft adapted to register with marks on both of said dials.
9. A pay roll time calculator comprising supporting members, a time dial journalled for adjustment on said members, a fixed indicating mark on said time dial, an hour registry dial, a shaft journalled on the supporting members, a pointer fixed to the shaft and adapted to register with the scale of the time dial, and means operatively connected between the shaft and the hour dial for eecting rotation of the dial in an opposite direction to the rotation of the shaft, a fixed indicating mark on the calculator from which the number of hours which have been worked may be read off the rotated or hour dial, said means connected between the shaft and the hour dial comprising two plate gears meshing with one another and rotatable about axis laterally spaced from one another.
