UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HOLFORTY, OF SEDGWIOK, KANSAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,238, dated July 12, 1881. Application filed March 21, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE HOLFORTY, of Sedgwick city, in the county of Harvey and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is the production of an efficient self-acting car-coupling device of simplified construction.
The invention consists of a vertically-sliding spring-actuated connecting-bolt which engages with the head ofthe connecting-link upon three sides thereof, the bolt being adapted to move in ways formed in the draw-head.
This invention also consists of the connecting-link constructed with pointed heads, and having inclined shoulders formed upon the sides of the heads for raising the sliding connecting-bolts when the cars are brought together for coupling.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a front view of one of the draw-heads, partly in section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the draw-heads, which are of cast-iron, and are formed with the beveled central front opening, a, through which the heads of the connecting-link B pass when the cars are coupled, and with the vertical chamber b, which permits lateral movement of the ends of the connecting-link, so that the link will not cramp in rounding curves in the railroad.
The connecting-link B is formed with the pointed heads 0 c, which form shoulders upon the sides and top thereof for engagement with the sliding bifurcated connecting-bolt O.
The sides of the heads 0 c are formed with the inclined shoulders c 0, over which the parts 6 e of the connecting-bolt ride when the ears are brought together for connecting.
The connecting-bolt 0 moves vertically in the ways M formed in the draw-heads, and the upper end thereof passes through the plate d secured to the top of the draw-head and is provided above the plate with the pin i, which limits its downward movement in the Ways when the connecting-link isremoved from the draw-head.
The connecting-boltis forced down to prevent accidental uncoupling of the cars by means of the spring H, one end of which passes through the bolt, the other end being rigidly fastened in or upon the side or end of the vertical chamber 12 of the draw-head. This spring also serves to hold the connecting-bolt in a horizontal position when the same is placed in the head ready to connect with another car.
When the cars are brought together for coupling the pointed end of the link may strike the beveled face of the draw-head, from whence it is guided directly to the central front opening in the head and under the connecting-bolt, which rides up and over the pointed head and the inclined shoulders 0 c, and drops over the shoulders of the head, holding it upon three sides.
For uncoupling the cars it is necessary only to lift the sliding-bolt O, which may be done by the hand of the brakem an from the platform of the car by a system of levers attached to the platform or to the top of the car, which may be operated either by the foot or hand, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent In car-couplings, the combination, with a link, B, having pointed heads 0, with shoulders on each side as well as at the top, of the slidebolts 0, having prongs c e, whereby the link is brought into contact with the bolt on three sides, as shown and described.
GEORGE HoLFoETY.
