1). GRUBB. WAGON BRAKE.
No 244,229. Patented July 12,1881
WITNESSES INVENTOR:
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICQ DAvID GRUBB, or UNION, INDIANA.
WAGON-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,229, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed May 20, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,DAVID GRUBB, of Union, in the county of Pike and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved wagon-brake, with the front bolster broken away centrally, and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and are detail views.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of wagon-brakes in which the brake is applied to the wheels of a wagon by the animals holding back upon the pole or tongue; and it consists, first, in the peculiar construction of devices whereby the brake may be applied to the hind wheels when desired, or the wagon backed without applying the brake, by simply turning the wagon-hammer or pivotal pin connecting the double-tree with the tongue.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction, hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings,a and 1) represent the front and hind axles of a wagon,to which the front and rear hounds, c d, and coupling-pole e are secured. The front part of the rear hounds,d, is secured to the coupling-pole e, and the plate f is secured on the upper face of the rear hounds, which plate supports the brake-bar h, hinged thereto, and extending on each side beyond the hind wheels.
To the upper edge of the brake-bar h, and straddling the coupling-pole, are secured the bifurcated ends of an arm, 2', having an elongated curved horizontal slot, k, at its forward end, which engages with a loop, I, secured to the rear end of the tongue '12. A band, m, passes around the bifurcated ends of the arm 1' and the coupling-pole in rear of the front axle. The tongue or pole at is provided with a slot, 0, in its side and near its end, and extending through the tongue, through which slot passes a bolt, 2, which extends also through the forward ends of the front hounds, and also through a wed ged-shaped block, q, inserted between the forward ends of the front hounds. The wedge-shaped block (1 is preferably cast in one piece, with a longitudinal opening or recess, r, for the passage of the rear end of the tongue, and parallel slots 8 s in its upper and lower faces, through which the wagon hammer or pin 2., by means of which the double-tree is pivoted to the tongue, passes. The rear upper face of the wedgeshaped block q is provided with a bent piece of metal, a, projecting upward and forward, to limit the backward movement of the tongue and double-tree.
'v is an angular strap, secured at one end to the tongue, near its end, passing thence into a notch in the bent projection a, and resting on the upper face of the double-tree at its front end, through a hole in which and corresponding holes in the middle of the doubletree and tongue the wagon-hammer passes. The wagon-hammer t, or pin by means of which the double-tree is pivoted to the tongue, is provided with a half-head, 10, so arranged and of such length that when the head is turned to the rear and the horses backed the head will impinge against the bent projection 10, and prevent the brake-bar from coming in contact with the hind wheels of the wagon.
By this construction it will be seen that when a wagon with my improved brake attached is descending a hill and the animals holding back the brake-bar will be applied to the hind wheels, and that by turning the wagon-hammer so that its head will project to the rear it will come in contact with the bent plate on the rear end of the wedgeshaped piece, thus allowing the wagon to be backed without applying the brake to the hind wheels.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a wagon-brake, the combination, with the slotted arm 1', secured to the brake-bar h, of the slotted tongue 02, having a loop, Z, on its rear end, wagon-hammer if, having halfhead 10, and wedge-shaped block q, inserted between the forward ends of the front hounds and provided with recess 1", slots 8 s, and bent piece u, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the bifurcated 5 arm 1', having an elongated slot, 70, hand m,
brake-bar h, pivoted to the plate f, and coupling-pole e, of the slotted tongue 11,, having loop 1, Wagon-hammer t, and block g, inserted between the forward ends of the front hounds and provided with recess 7, slots 8 s, and bent 10 piece a, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
