SASH-CORD FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,206, dated July 12, 1881.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sash provided with our improved sash-cord socket. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same on the line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of our improved sash-cord socket. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same, showing the two sections composing it detached.

The socket A is composed of two semi-cylindrical sections, B B provided with front semicircular end plates, (l 0 projecting beyond the sections, so as to form semi-annular flanges, from which ribs D D and longitudinal flanges E E (which latter form ribs when the sections are united) run to the inner end of the socket, these ribs being beveled toward the inner end of the socket. The flanges E of the section B are recessed longitudinally to receive the flanges E of the section B and forming shoulders F upon which the lower end of the flanges E rest, and the inner ends of the flanges E are provided with a projection, F, fitting over the inner end of the flanges E so that when either section is pressed inward or drawn outward it exerts a like pressure on the other section, which moves with it. One of the front end plates-for instance, Ois provided with a longitudinal recess, G, in its straight edge, forming a slot in the front end of the socket when the two sections are united. The inner end plates, N N of the sections are provided with notches or recesses J J forming an aperture through which the cord passes, (in the innor end plate of the socket,) when the two sections are united. Each section is provided with a semicircular partition, K K with a recess or notch in its straight edge. The section B is provided with two projections or prongs, L L at its inner end, these prongs 0r projections forming a fork at the inner end of the socket.
An inclined hole, M, is bored into the end rail, N, of the sash from the side of the same, near its upper end, and another hole, 0, is bored into the inner or outer surface of the rail N, this hole 0 terminating in the hole M, thus forming an angular inclined aperture in the rail N. The cord to be fastened to the sash is passed into the holes 0 and M, and up through the groove Q in the side rail, N, then over the pulley to the balancing-weight, is fastened thereto, and the cord is then cut at the proper length, and the end of the same is placed between the partitions K K of the sections B B which are then driven into the hole 0 until the outer end plates, C G, are flush with the inner surface of the rail N. The two sections are thus driven together and the end of the cord is clamped between the partitions K K and is thus held very firmly. A chain cannot be clamped between the partitions K K especially not those chains ordinarily used to suspend sash-weights, as they can only be bent in one direction; and to pass into the socket A from the side of the rail N two bends in different directions are required, as shown in Fig. 2. The chain is therefore bent once only, and is passed in between the prongs L L in such a manner that these prongs rest between two adjoining links-that is, in the recess formed where two links are united. The socket is then driven into the hole 0 in the manner described above. The socket A can be withdrawn very conveniently by means of a suitable instrument inserted in the slot in the front end or outer end plate of the socket.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, with the sash end or side rail, N, and with the sash cord or chain P, of the socket A, composed of two sections, B B clamped upon the cord and driven into an aperture in the inner or outer surface of the rail N, substantially as herein shown and described, and forthe purpose set forth.
2. A sash-cord or chain-socket, made substantially as herein shown and described, and

3.
